| ~ Hades revealing to Diana that he is holding Circe hostage. |
Hades is a major antagonist in DC's Absolute Universe comic, Absolute Wonder Woman.
He is the God of the Dead and ruler of the Underworld, where Circe and her adoptive daughter Diana live. Though not inherently evil, Hades is shown as being careless for the lives of "lesser" beings and petty and vindicative, as is common amongst greek gods. Though having nothing personally against Diana of Temyschira, it is his job to stop anything bound to the Underworld from ever leaving it. However, he eventually does declare himself as an enemy of hers, which is reciprocrated by the heroine, once she leaves his domains.
Appearance[]
Hades is a humanoid, several times bigger than a normal man, with a body composed of bright blue flames that burn downwards. He possess no facial features other than two bright white eyes. He also has a red "m" shaped crown hovering over his head, symbolozing his role as king of the Underworld.
Biography[]
Hades is the God of the Dead and of the Underworld. As told in the greek myth, Hades once tricked Peserphone into becoming his wife by kidnapping her and having her eat food of the underworld, with her now staying half the time with him and half the time away. He is mostly tasked with preventing anything there from leaving his domains. Among his prisoners are Circe, a witch condemned to a solitary island in the underworld, and her adoptive daughter Diana.
When Diana, using a magical spell, manages to rise up to the surface to fight off the Harbingers and the Tetracide, Hades forcefully brings her back once her mission is over by opening Gateway City's beach and pulling her with an ethereal hand.
At his throne room, Hades questions her, seemingly with good mood, before having all her weapons removed. As they discuss and Diana reinforces she will keep getting out of the Underworld no matter how many times she is brought back in, Hades reveals he has Circe kidnapped and in his power. He proposes a game with Diana, a gladiator battle in which, if she wins, she can go to the surface, but will leave Circe behind forever.
In Hades' gladiator arena, Diana battles a Chimera, while Hades, Perserphone and a bound Circe watch. Once Diana restrains the creature and says it is over, asking for Hades to call off the duel, the god insists that she must kill it in order to win. Begtudginly, the Amazon finishes the job and calls off Hades, saying he is not worthy of being Lord of anything.
As she prepares to leave the underworld, Hades further taunts her with never being able to see Circe again, before Diana reveals she will still have a month in the Underworld per year due to eating seeds hailing from there, which angers Hades, even more when he discovers Perserphone was the one to give her those. He says to Diana that she made a powerful enemy, but the Wonder Woman says the same to him, before going with her mother to prepare to leave the Underworld.
Trivia[]
- His downward flames are a reference straight from Thanatos, who, inthe original greek myth, is described with such. Their bright blue color, however, is likely a reference to the famous Disney rendition of the Hades himself.
