~ Hades threatening the Justice League.
Hades, also known as Lord Hades, is a supporting antagonist in the DC Animated Universe, serving as one of the two main antagonists (alongside Felix Faust) of the Justice League episode "Paradise Lost" and the secondary antagonist of the Jusatice League Unlimited episode "The Balance".
He is the Olympian god who rules over the Tartarus, the ancient Greek Underworld, where he was sent to after betraying his fellow gods. Originally Queen Hippolyta's lover, Hades conspired to have the Oylmpians overthrown by the Titans millennia ago, resulting in his banishment by Zeus after the Titans lost the war, forcing Hades to eventually contact and manipulate Felix Faust to achieve his freedom again. He is likely the reason for which why Hippolyta's hatred for men started and why the Amazons were raised under misandristic beliefs.
Millenia ago, Hades was one of the Olympian gods who ruled over the Earth from Mount Olympus. Eventually, Hades had a love affair with Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons from Themyscira. It was purpotedly during this relationship that Hades helped Hippolyta to sculpt her daughter Diana, who would become known in modern history as Wonder Woman.
Eventually, however, a war broke out between the Olympians and the Titans, during which Hades suddenly performed a treacherous move: he offered the Titans to deliver Mount Olympus to them in exchange of absolutely control over humanity. To fulfill his word, Hades tricked Hippolyta to open the Gates of the Olympus, which she did. This led to a bloody battle that, by the present day, "the Muses still sing", but ultimately, the Olympians defeated the Titans.
Furious at his betrayal, Zeus severely punished Hades by banishing him into the Pit of Tartarus, sentenced to rule over any lost souls for all eternity. Meanwhile, for her indirect role in Hades' complot, Hippolyta was forced to guard the Gates of the Tartarus forever in Themyscira, leading her to hide the pieces of the key necessary to open them. Regretful for trusting Hades, however, was likely one of the reasons for which Hippolyta developed a misandristic point of view towards men.
Approximately three thousand years after his defeat, Hades went on to contact the disgraced English professor Felix Faust, to whom Hades offered a deal: if Faust managed to free him by collecting the pieces of the key of the Gates of Tartarus, Hades would grant him the "ultimate knowledge", offer that the studious Faust accepted.
Justice League[]
In the episode "Paradise Lost", Hades is first heard after Faust blackmails Wonder Woman into finding the remaining pieces to the key of Tartarus in exchange of unpetrifying Hippolyta and the Amazons with his magic. Hades demands to know why he isn't free yet, to which Faust informs him about Wonder Woman collecting the pieces for them, a change of plans that Hades reluctantly accepts, though he threatens to claim Faust's soul if he fails despite Faust's confidence in Wonder Woman's success. After Wonder Woman collects the last piece, Hades calls Faust again, but he assures him that Wonder Woman will soon take the prize to them.
Eventually, thanks to Wonder Woman, Faust manages to rebuild the key and opens the Gates of Tartarus, freeing Hades from his banishment. Hades soon arrives and delights himself at seeing Hippolyta (whom Faust took as an "offering" for him) again, remarking how much he had missed her. Faust interrupts to demand his promised rewards, which Hades grants in his own way: pain and suffering, aging Faust up into an older man because that's only what men are gonna know.
However, Wonder Woman and the Justice League appear on scene and free Hippolyta, to which Hades expresses his surprise at learning that Hippolyta had a daughter before burning the battleground with his fire. He then engages the Justice Leaguers and Hippolyta in a fight before summoning the dead bodies of the fallen warriors around him to fight for him, quickly outnumbering them, with Hades laughing at everyone and demanding them to kneel before a god.
Nevertheless, a spiteful Faust conjures a spell that reveals Hades' true monstrous form, prompting Hades to knock Faust away with his powers before targeting Hippolyta and Wonder Woman, whom he throws aside despite her attempts to use her Lasso of Truth on him, promising to take care of her later. However, while Hades forces Hippolyta into the ground, Wonder Woman opts to destroy the key to Tartarus to banish him back.
Realizing this too late, Hades knocks Hippolyta unconscious and runs desperately to stop Wonder Woman, but she destroys the key and all of Hades' forces are sucked into the Tartarus. Unwilling to return, Hades grabs Hippolyta and tries to escape, but a piece of hubris knocks him into the Gates. He still grabs from Hippolyta as Wonder Woman rescues her, but Wonder Woman knocks him away by kicking him to the head, sending Hades back to the Tartarus.
Justice League Unlimited[]
In the episode "The Balance", a few years after his defeat in Themyscira, Hades keeps running the Tartarus until Felix Faust, armed now with the Annihilator army he stole from his apprentice Tala at Project Cadmus after his death, breaks into the Tartarus with the intentions to torture Hades for a few millenia in revenge for causing his death previously, but Hades offers Faust a new deal: access to his own private library.
Eager to learn more, Faust accepts, but karmically, goes back on his deal and sends Hades to a pcoket dimension to be tortured, chaining him to a rock where vultures often pick at his chest, which doesn't kill him due to being a god.
As a result of Faust neglecting Hades' duties, demons try to break out from Tartarus, with the Amazons barely being able to hold on the Gates of Tartarus, and several magical users such as Etrigan the Demon, Doctor Fate and Zatanna start agonizing without rest, leading Zeus to ask Hermes to inform Wonder Woman about the situation so she can give Hades back to his throne to restore the magical balance, which she reluctantly accepts.
Accompanied by Hawkgirl, Wonder Woman ventures into the Tartarus and they track Faust down to Hades' library after Hawkgirl fails to convince Wonder Woman to find Hades first and then go after Faust, as Wonder Woman still hates him for what he tried to do with her and her mother. However, Faust sends them instead to the pocket dimension where Hades is, allowing the two heroines to free him and tell him that he must take back his throne to restore the balance, which he accepts, mockingly remarking that the gods now appreciate his work while proclaiming himself to be in debt with Wonder Woman, calling her "my child" to her frustration.
Hades accompanies the two Justice Leaguers to his library, proceeding to fight Faust after Hawkgirl distracts him by burning part of the library, but Faust prove himself able to beat Hades with the Annihilator. Hawkgirl and Wonder Woman come to assist him, with Hades saving Wonder Woman from being stomped on by Faust before being knocked away, but Wonder Woman manages to save the day by destroying the Annihilator with Hawkgirl's Nth metal maze.
Despite his library's destruction, Hades dismisses that he doesn't have time to read these days anyway and that he plans to torture Faust's soul from now on. Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl show no objection to his decision, but Wonder Woman asks him to not call her "my child" again, after which Hades reveals the apparent truth behind her parentage before departing. Hawkgirl insists Wonder Woman to use the Lazzo of Truth on him to prove that he lies, but Wonder Woman decides that even if Hades' claims are true, it doesn't matter, as Hippolyta was the parent who raised her into the person she is.

Trivia[]
Although he claimed to be Wonder Woman's "father", it is left unclear whether Hades was lying about him helping Queen Hippolyta to sculpt Wonder Woman or not.
Although Hades does exist in the source material, the showrunners of Justice League feel like their depiction of Hades was more based on the Marvel Comics version of the character.
It's highly likely that Hades was planning to rape Hippolyta and Wonder Woman if the sexual overtones most of his dialogue to them are of any indication. This makes him the second DC Animated Universe villain to possibly be a rapist, after Arkady Duvall.
Out of all of the original Justice League line-up, Hades can be considered an enemy to all of them except for Green Lantern, as John Stewart didn't appear in neither of the two episodes where Hades appeared.
