Hades is a recurring antagonist in the Descendants franchise.

He appears as a minor but pivotal protagonist in Descendants 3, the protagonist of the novel Escape From The Isle of The Lost and an unseen antagonist in the novels Isle of The Lost and Return to The Isle of The Lost.

He is the former ruler of the Underworld, the most powerful villain residing on the Isle of The Lost, the ex-husband of Maleficent and the father of Mal and Hadie.

He was portrayed by Cheyenne Jackson.

History

Backstory

Main article: Hades (Disney)

Exile

After his defeat Hades was banished to the Isle of The Lost by King Beast. While there he developed a romantic relationship with fellow villain Maleficent, whom he eventually married and had a daughter with, only to abandon his family not so long after his daughter's birth.

Isle of The Lost

Much to the annoyance of Hades, Maleficent deliberately defied and disrespected him to their daughter Mal often belittling her and abusing her and calling her weak by comparing her to her father.

Return to The Isle of The Lost

In the novel, it is revealed that Hades has a son named Hadie which would make him Mal's half-brother. It is implied that Hadie has received from his father and expressed fear at the idea of his father discovering his desire to be an anti-hero instead of a villain.

Escape from The Isle of The Lost

Hades does not appear in any form in the TV Series however a statue of him stolen by Dr. Facilier makes an appearance.

Descendants 3

Hades appears in the third Descendants film, where he attempts to escape the Isle of the Lost after King Ben, Mal and their friends were picking up the new VKs to Auradon, his attempt fails when Mal (in her dragon form) pushes him back inside the barrier. Hades is later seen sleeping on his chair, Celia Facilier gets annoyed with record player so she turns it off, waking Hades. It is later revealed that he is Mal's father and was once married to Maleficent before abandoning the two of them. Mal visits him to steal his ember, but after hashing out their differences, he lends her the ember to save Auradon. After Mal defeats Audrey, he is then brought to Auradon to save her life after she is put under an enchanted sleep. Both he and Mal reunite at the end of the film after Mal and Ben choose to unite Auradon and the Isle of the Lost. He happily is seen hugging her, while giving a parental threat to Ben, before wishing the two happiness in their marriage.

Personality

Hades is somewhat more mellow than his original version with him being much more relaxed and level headed. In spite of this however he remains a cold and distant figure who cares quite little for many people and is motivated by purely blind revenge against the heroes residing in Auradon.

Appearance

Hades appears much more humanoid than his original version with his hair being simply varying shades of blue in color as opposed to literal flames, his skin being a more ordinary fair skinned tone than grayish blue and his clothing being more modern albeit dirty and tattered, with him adopting somewhat of a punk persona in his time on the Isle.

Trivia

• Hades' outfit in Descendants 3 is a possible reference to another villain in the series, Zevon with his bluish color scheme and black leather trench coat being somewhat reminiscent of Zevon's outfit and signature color of teal.
