Haerinvureem, better known as Shimmergloom is a major antagonist of R.A Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt, serving as one of the two main antagonist of Streams of Silver (along with Artemis Entreri). He was a shadow dragon of the Underdark and the last surviving dragon of Jaezred Chaulssin. He eventually emerged from the depths to attack the dwarven city of Mirthral Hall. With the help of his duegar army, he conquered the city and ruled for several hundred years. He was the archnemesis of Bruenor Battlehammer.
Appearance[]
Shimmergloom was an ancient dragon, being 20 to 30 feet in length and having large wings and tail, as well as a long fringe of spines. He had black translucent scales which made him appear insubstantial and helped him camouflage.
Personality[]
Like many dragons, Shimmergloom saw himself superior to all living things and took immense pleasure in killing and eating creature it looked down upon. He was viciously power-hungry and greedy, killing thousands to take control of Mithral Hall and enslaving hundreds of duergar.
History[]
Haerinvureem was originally a member of Jaezred Chaulssin, a clan of shadow dragon in the Underdark. The shadow dragons periodically bred with drow, producing half-dragons. Eventually, the half dragons turned on the dragons, killing all of them but Haerinvureem, who escaped into the depths.
Over the centuries, Shimmergloom gathered up thousands of duergar slaves. At some point, he became aware of the dwarf mine of Mithral Hall which had gone down deep enough to reach the Underdark, and had his army attack it. During the battle Shimmergloom killed thousands of dwarves, and emerged victorious, taking the Hall.
Shimmergloom spent about a century ruling the Hall and enjoying his treasures, when Bruenor Battlehammer, the son of the previous king, arrived to take it back. Bruenor and his friends approached the edge Shimmergloom's chasm, a massively wide and deep pit in the depths of Mithral Hall where the dragon slept. Shimmergloom emerged from to chasm and tried to kill Bruenor and his friends but was foiled when Bruenor tricked him into getting covered in oil, then jumped onto his back with a torch, lighting the dragon on fire and killing him.
