Hain

Hain is the main antagonist of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Who Mourns for Morn?".

He was portrayed by the late Gregory Itzin, who also played Ilon Tandro in "Dax" and Charles Logan in 24.

Biography[]

Hain was part of a group of criminals that also comprised future Deep Space 9 resident Morn, Larell and brothers Krit and Nahsk. Together, they carried out the Lissepian Mother's Day heist, taking advantage of the celebration to steal a thousand bricks of gold-pressed latinum from the central bank. However, Morn immediately absconded with the whole of the loot. He proceeded to lie low on Deep Space 9 for nine years, waiting for the statute of limitations to expire.

Once he was free from prosecution, Hain headed to Deep Space 9, where Morn had been declared dead in a shuttle accident and left his estate, including the thousand bricks, to bartender Quark. Hain approached Quark claiming to be a security agent working for the Lurian royal family. He said that Morn had been the crown prince of Luria and the thousand bricks had been gifted to him when he abdicated his claim to the throne. Now that he was dead, the latinum reverted to the royal family and by trying to claim it, Quark was guilty of fraud. However, on learning that Larell and the brothers were also on the station, the former posing as Morn's ex-wife and the latter as his business associates, Hain told Quark there was a reward for Larell's capture.

Hain went to Quark's quarters to find Larell, Krit and Nahsk already there. The four of them admitted the truth to Quark and agreed to split the latinum between them. Hain was initially willing to kill Quark, but on learning his thumb print was needed to claim the latinum, he rejected Nahsk's suggestion of cutting his thumb off and agreed to Quark taking over Morn's share of the loot. Hain also insisted the five of them stay together until they take delivery, with them spending the evening in the closed bar. They were surprised to learn none of them had killed Morn, meaning his death probably was an accident.

As they took delivery, the four thieves suddenly pulled their weapons on each other. Hain initially stood with Larell, aiming his weapon at the brothers, but when Krit and Nahsk turned on each other, Hain and Larell switched to aiming at each other. There was an exchange of fire in which Hain was wounded before Odo, the station's security chief, arrived to take charge of the situation, having the wounded sent to the infirmary and noting all four would be going to jail for assault with intent to kill. It later transpired Morn had faked his death, knowing Hain and the others would turn on each other sooner or later.
