You think it matters? The Jarl is corrupt. He took gold for that damn concordat. You think he has any type of loyalty? If only you knew the truth. I'd gladly tell you, I would, but I'm afraid you won't be leaving here alive.
~ Hajvarr to The Last Dragonborn

Hajvarr Iron-Hand was a Nord bandit chief and lives hidden with his gang in a mountain directly across from the city walls.

He serves as a minor antagonist in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Background[]

Hajvarr originally lived in Whiterun as the "model citizen". He always tried to help out the city in various peacekeeper ways.

Rejection and Retreat[]

Hajvarr attempted to join The Companions warriors guild, however, after he was deemed too aggressive, his request to join was dropped. This angered him so much that he completely abandoned Whiterun, and fled to the hills.

Forming a gang[]

Hajvarr contacted his uncle, Ulfr, a blind man, to be his second hand. He agreed, and, through local recruiting, the men set up a large gang, living inside a mountain cave.

Skyrim[]

Careful if you cross the river to the east. Old Hajvar Iron-Hand and his brigands are holed up in that cave, White River Watch.
~ Whiterun Guards

Hajvarr is one of the named Bandit chiefs in Skyrim, and although he may look like just another indifferent bandit boss, he is mentioned several times throughout the game and referenced in a side quest.

The cutthroats Eisa Blacktorn and Ra'jirr, encountered in Frostmere Crypt during the quest The Pale Lady, were once members of the White River gang, as evidenced by both Eisa's and Hajvarr's journals. Eisa and Ra'jirr led a mutiny against Hajvarr, but Hajvarr resisted and alongside his loyal men, killed all the traitors, except for Eisa and Ra'jirr, who he attempted to track down for some time, but eventually gave up. According to Eisa's journal, which can be found in Frostmere Crypt, they "weren't going anywhere with Hajvarr leading".

Hajvarr is also mentioned by the Hold Guards in Whiterun, who warns that you must be careful when crossing the White River, as "old Hajvarr and his brigands are on that cave". He may also be possibly the target of a bounty issued by Proventus Avenicci or Brill. The blind man who watches the cave's entrance, Ufr, is Hajvarr's uncle. Just outside the cave, one of the bandits found there possess a note from Hajvarr, telling him to "stop tricking Ufr".

He is found at the very end of the cave, White River Overlook, where he presumably watches over the road, searching for travelers and merchants to raid. When he sights the Dragonborn, he becomes immediately hostile and can be a tough fight for a low-level player. After killing him, his journal may be looted off his corpse.
