Return to your mountains, Folstag, or melt in the fires of Muspell!
~ Halogi threatening Folstag.

Halogi, also known as the Fire King, is a recurring antagonist in Age of Mythology: Retold. He is the destructive ruler of fire giants and bitter rival of Folstag, king of frost giants. He first appears in a scenario called "Reginleif's Rally" where he shares the main antagonist role with Folstag and Gargarensis. He returns as in the seventh scenario of the Pillars of the Gods campaign as a minor antagonist.

Biography[]

Halogi is a fire giant from Jotunheim. His past, including his age, is largely unknown, but he leads a clan composed of fire giants and stone giants, while the clan of his rival Folstag is made up of frost giants and mountain giants. He seems to desire the demise of the gods of the North through Ragnarok, and it seems that he has allied with the cyclops warlord Gargarensis because the latter's goal of freeing Kronos and the other Titans from Tartarus aligns with his vision. He comes off as more fierce and defiant than the more introspective Folstag.

In "Reginleif's Rally", the giant clans united by Gargarensis, including those of Halogi and Folstag, attack Alfheim where the unprepared Norse forces are almost entirely crushed. When the entire resistance is almost entirely crushed, Halogi and Folstag almost turn on each other before Gargarensis stops them and tells them to focus on crushing the last standing village. Reginleif, a valkyrie of Odin, arrives to lead the village against Gargarensis and the giants. Defeating Folstag and Halogi by destroying their bases before crushing Gargarensis is optional, but the scenario ends with the surviving giants retreating into the hills. Whereas Folstag retreats to his homelands and Gargarensis escapes to continue his scheaming in Egypt, it is left ambigious if Halogi is killed or merely defeated.

By the time of Pillars of the Gods, Halogi has went to Niflheim following his death, and he continues leading his fire giants in an endless war against the frost giants of Folstag who has redeemed himself before his own death. After the destruction of the Celestial Pillars results in the underworlds of different civilizations intersecting, a Chinese hero named Yan Feifeng enters them to find Nüwa's Stones to restore the Pillars. Joining forces with several deceased heroes of different cultures, he enters Niflheim to recover the Blue Stone which Halogi has taken possession of. The Fire King uses the Stone to enlargen himself for yet another clash with Folstag. Deciding that helping Folstag win Halogi is their best chance to recover the Stone, the heroes make preparations to strengthen themselves before joining the fray. They vanquish Halogi and secure the Blue Stone, though it's left ambiquous if Halogi is truly gone or just temporarily diminished.

Quotes[]

Gargarensis: The Old One has foreseen the fall of the Norse gods. Come take their place as lords of the north!
Halogi: I share this vision, and will see it fulfilled!
~ Halogi rallied by Gargarensis against Reginleif's forces.
I'll give you a fiery death, valkyrie!
~ Halogi underestimating Reginleif.
When the Sons of Muspell ride over Mirkwood, I shall be avenged!
~ Halogi defeated by Reginleif.

Trivia[]

  • Halogi is created exclusively for Age of Mythology: Retold and doesn't appear in the original Age of Mythology.
  • Halogi's appearance is based on that of the Son of Muspell, the upgraded version of the Fire Giant unit.
  • The Retold version of the Fall of the Trident campaign is largely like in the original game that doesn't include Halogi, but though it is unconfirmed, the Fire King possibly appears in the closing cinematic of the "Beneath the Surface" scenario. As a horde of Gargarensis' fire giants are chasing the retreating heroes from the Hades Gate, a Son of Muspell is walking ahead of them and almost upon the heroes. When Chiron decides to sacrifice himself to buy his friends time to escape, the Son of Muspell hurls a fireball at the centaur who dodges and knocks down the giant boulder that stops the fire giants in their tracks and crushes the Son of Muspell. If said Son of Muspell is Halogi, it would mean that he survived the events of "Reginleif's Rally" only to meet his demise at the hands of Chiron who in turn is burned alive by the Fire King's subjects.
