There are those who can't be trusted!
~ Haman lying to King Xerxes about Mordecai's family.
You can call me "Sir". You know, we both work for the king, but compared to me, you are a g-nat.
~ Haman's extreme egotism towards Mordecai.

Haman is the main antagonist of the VeggieTales movie Esther: The Girl Who Became Queen, a retelling of the Biblical Book of Esther. He is the arch-enemy of Mordecai and Esther. He is the xenophobic right-hand man to King Xerxes that seeks to keep his position of power at any cost and incriminate Mordecai and his family.

Being played by Mr. Lunt, he was voiced by Phil Vischer, who also serves as one of Big Idea Entertainment's founders.

Biography[]

Replacing Queen Vashti[]

Haman served as the right-hand to King Xerxes, aiding him in official business and running of the kingdom. One night, Xerxes asked Haman to ask his wife, Queen Vashti, if she would make him a sandwich. She refused, so Haman threw her out onto the street for disobeying. While Xerxes thinks that it was too extreme, Haman assures him that it had to be done or else no one would take Xerxes seriously. They then decide that they will have to find Xerxes a new Queen.

Haman travels to various locations getting eligible women to come with him, and eventually arrives in Persia where a girl named Esther and her cousin Mordecai, who is a guard at the King's palace, live. Haman hates Mordecai because of the latter's friendly relationship with Xerxes, causing Mordecai to hide when Haman arrives. Haman begins collecting women to come with him. When Esther says she does not want to go, Haman tells her that he does not care and commands her to get in his wagon with the others.

Mordecai sticks up for Esther and tries to stop her from revealing that they are family. Haman mocks Mordecai by calling him a gnat, though he mispronounces it by not making the "g" silent. When Mordecai corrects him, Haman is enraged and yells at Esther to get in the wagon and Mordecai to bow before him. Both refuse, making Haman even angrier. Mordecai eventually lets Esther go, telling her that he will explain later, and Esther eventually complies with Haman's demands.

Mordecai comes to visit Esther later that night, and explains that Haman hates their entire family, and if he knew he and she were related, her life could be put in grave danger. Haman later joins Xerxes as they are evaluating all of the potential new Queens, turning down ones he does not like. Esther performs a song that her grandmother taught her, and both Xerxes and Haman enjoy it and crown her the new Queen.

Scheming against Mordecai[]

The next day, Haman assures King Xerxes that his new Queen will like him, under penalty of death. As Haman is fetching Esther, two criminals named the Peaoni Brothers, appear uninvited, then make an attempt on Xerxes' life by trying to lure him with a cake and crushing him with a piano. Mordecai, spot the trap and alerts Esther, who warns the King. Haman then has Mordecai seize the criminals, which Mordecai succeeds in doing. When Xerxes thanks Esther for warning him, she truthfully tells him that Mordecai alerted her to the danger, much to Haman's anger. Before the King can thank Mordecai, Haman interrupts by punishing the Peaoni Brothers with banishment to the Island of Perpetual Tickling, which is where prisoners are tickled day and night, which is akin to torture.

Haman hates the fact that Mordecai is on the King's good side and is a threat to his position, so he devises a plan. That night, he approaches Xerxes and warns him that there is a family of criminals conspiring against him. Xerxes is angered and frightened by this, and gives Haman permission to seek out these criminals and banish them to the Island of Perpetual Tickling, giving his seal. However, unbeknownst to the King, the form he approved was an edict for Mordecai and his family, allowing Haman to begin hunting them down.

Mordecai learns of the edict, and goes to Esther to ask her to go to the King about it. Esther is afraid, knowing what could happen if she approaches the King uninvited. Though she initially refuses, she soon builds up the courage to approach Xerxes. The next day, Haman is discussing the details of the banishment with Xerxes when Esther arrives. Haman is unhappy about her arrival, and despite explaining that approaching Xerxes uninvited warrants death or banishment, the King blows him off and tells him the Queen can visit him any time she pleases.

However, when the King asks Esther what she wanted, Esther is frightened by Haman's glaring and asks if they would like to join her for dinner. They agree and come (as well as play a game of Trivial Pursuit), but Esther still cannot work up the courage to tell the King of Haman's villainy, causing her to ask them if they would like to join her for dinner again the next night, which both of them agree to. Haman confronts Mordecai outside of the palace, mocking him with his upcoming banishment and requesting again that Mordecai bow to him in exchange for letting his family go. Mordecai angrily refuses, causing Haman to lash out at Mordecai, telling him that he will speed up the process to have Mordecai and his family banished that night.

As Haman heads over to make his request to Xerxes, the latter remembers Mordecai's act of saving his life and tries to think of a way to thank him. Haman comes in, and Xerxes explains that there is someone important that he would like to thank, and asks Haman how to do it. Haman, thinking that Xerxes is referring to him, suggests giving the recipient a parade, where they are allowed to wear royal robes and a crown, be carried by Xerxes' horse, and have his praises called out to the people. Xerxes gladly accepts Haman's request, and orders him to do it for Mordecai, much to Haman's anger and disgust.

Receiving his comeuppance[]

YOU HAD ME BANISH THE MAN WHO SAVED MY LIFE, AND MY OWN QUEEN?! For your punishment, Haman, YOU are to be sent to the Island of Perpetual Tickling, along with anyone else who DARES scheme against my Queen and her family!
~ King Xerxes, after he found out about Haman's betrayal.

Haman is forced to give the parade and call out Mordecai's praises, but still plans on carrying out his plan. Haman joins Esther and the King for dinner again that night, but this time Esther works up the courage to tell Xerxes that Haman has plotted to banish her family, revealing that Mordecai is her cousin and that the edict the King approved was for his family and hers. Xerxes is outraged at Haman for trying to banish the man who saved him, as well as his wife. He then punishes Haman instead by sending him to the Island of Perpetual Tickling, where he is tickled and tortured for the rest of his life, along with anyone else who dared to plot against the Queen and her family. Mordecai ends up getting Haman's old job, and both Esther and Xerxes end up ruling over their kingdom together.

Personality[]

Haman is deceitful, cunning and cruel. He seeks for nothing else than to keep his position of power or ascend beyond it, and any and all threats to his position he conspires and schemes against, even trying to force them into torturous situations simply for opposing him. He is egotistical and arrogant, believing himself to be worthy of any and all admiration and respect. He is also angry and violent when someone disagrees or even corrects him. He is also proven to be slow-witted when he realizes too late that Mordecai's family is Esther's family.

Quotes[]

Vashti: Who is it?
Haman: Um, Your Highness? Uh, the king was wondering if you could make him a sandwich.
Vashti: It's 3 o'clock in the morning.
Haman: Uh, yeah. But he says that he's the king, and whatever he says goes.
Vashti: Well, I'm the queen. And the king can make his own sandwich.
(Vashti slams the door and turns her lights off)
Haman: ...Okay.
(Haman throws Vashti out the palace)
Vasthi: YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME!! I'm the queen!
Haman: Oh, ho, you wanna bet?! (throws luggage at Vashti) The king can do whatever he wants! He's the KING! AND DON'T COME BACK!
~ Haman banishing Vashti.
I did not ask you if you were interested. The king needs a queen. Get in the wagon.
~ Haman telling Esther to get in the wagon.
Haman: Did you shush me?!
Mordecai: What? Uh, no. I was shushing--
Haman: Hey, I know you. You're Mordecai.
Mordecai: (sighs) Hello, Haman...
Haman: You can call me 'Sir'. You know, we both work for the king, but compared to me, you are a g-nat.
Mordecai: It's a g silent. It's 'gnat'.
Haman: Are you calling me a g-nat?!
Mordecai: No, just correcting your pronunciation...!
Haman: ARE YOU CALLING ME STUPID?!
Mordecai: Uh, no?
Haman: (to Esther) YOU! Get in the wagon! (to Mordecai) YOU! Bow down to me!
Mordecai: Uh, no!
Haman: Bow!!
Mordecai: NO!
Haman: BOW!!!
Mordecai: I bow to no one except my God and the king!
Haman: (furiously, to Esther) GET IN THE WAGON!!
Esther: But I want to stay with my--
(Mordecai shushes Esther)
Haman: DID YOU SHUSH ME AGAIN?!
Mordecai: No!! Oy! Essie, go! I'll explain later!
~ Haman and Mordecai's conversation before Haman takes Esther with him to Xerxes.

I say the punishment should be...banishment to the Island of Perpetual Tickling!
~ Haman banishing the Peaoni Brothers to the Island of Perpetual Tickling.
HA! Mordecai is busted!
~ Haman's evil laugh as he successfully tricks Xerxes into banishing Mordecai and his family.
So we're all set. I got the big boss reserved for Friday. Two more days, and we'll get rid of that dangerous family forever.
~ Haman discussing his plan with Xerxes.
Haman: Hey, who invited the queen? Did you invite the queen?
Xerxes: Uh, no. I don't think I did.
~ Haman asks Xerxes if he invited Esther when she appears before them
Haman: It sounds like the kinda guy who deserves a.....parade!
Xerxes: A parade? Hmm...
Haman: Yeah! I think this guy should be dressed in royal robes, and be marched through the whole city on your horse! And...and..and maybe you should even let him wear one of your crowns!
Xerxes: I guess he is pretty special.
Haman: And one of your most noble princes should lead this man through the streets proclaiming, "This is a really neat guy! The king really likes him! He's brave and has rugged good looks!"
~ Haman telling Xerxes that Mordecai deserves a parade, even though he thought Xerxes was talking about him.

Laugh all you want! You won't be laughing tomorrow! Haha! Ah, no, wait, you will. Oh, never mind.
~ Haman to Mordecai after he gave Mordecai his parade
Esther: Your Highness, someone is plotting against my family. Tomorrow, my people and I will be banished to the Island of Perpetual Tickling!
Xerxes: What?! Banish my queen? Oh, who would dare?
Esther: It's Haman!
Xerxes: Is this true?!
Haman: I don't know what she's talking about! She's crazy!!
Esther: It IS true!
Xerxes: Can you prove this charge?!
Haman: I'm telling you, she's making it up!
(Esther shows Xerxes the edict)
Xerxes: Wait a minute, that's Mordecai! I just gave him a parade!
Esther: Mordecai is my cousin! His family is my family!
~ Haman's plans exposed by Esther.
NOOOOOOO!!!! Oh, p-please stop it!! Please! You're killing me!
~ Haman's last words before he gets banished to the Island of Perpetual Tickling.
So Haman got what was coming to him. And then some. And Mordecai? This is my favorite part. He got Haman's old job. The #2 guy in the whole kingdom. Not bad. And Esther? What a gal! She showed the courage of ten kings, and saved her people.
~ The narrator explains what happened to the kingdom after Haman's banishment.
