Han Ki-Hwan is the main antagonist of the 2021 Korean Crime Drama Beyond Evil. He is the corrupted police chief and the one responsible for the death of the younger sister of Police Sergeant Lee Dong-sik from a hit and run.

He is also the father of Han Joo-won, Dong-sik's police partner.

He is portrayed by Choi Jin-ho who played Park Young-choon in No Mercy.

Background[]

Han Ki-Hwan was in cohort with corrupted businessman Lee Chang-Jin from JL construction and Councilwoman Do Hae-Won in a land development scheme in Manyang. In secret, he despises both Chang-Jin and Hae-Won for their attempt to turn him into their puppet.

After a drunken night, he ran over and killed Lee Dong-sik's sister. Wanting to become the puppet master against both his hated business partners, he manipulated Chang-Jin to put Dong-sik's sister body in front of the road to be ran over by Park Jung-Je, Hae-Won's son. Hae-won was forced to be in debt to Chang-Jin after he agreed to get rid of her body and framed Dong-sik for it.

However, the serial killer Kang Jin-Mook witnessed the scene and stole Dong-sik's sister body and buried in the fireplace of his house.

To avoid scandal, Hae-won institutionalized Park Jung-Je in an insane asylum,

Beyond Evil[]

After transferring his son Han Joo-won to Manyang police station due to charge of abuse of power, Joo-won became interest in the case of Dong-sik killing his sister 20 years ago as Kang Jin-mook starts racking up body count throughout the Manyang village located in Onyang. Joo-won is forced to become partner with Dong-sik and the two do not get along initially. Overtime, Joo-won realizes that Dong-sik is innocent after a throughout investigations.

Thanked to the careful strategy devised between Dong-sik and Joo-won, they managed to catch Jin-mook red-handed when he tried to dispose the body of one of his victims in his house. After Jin-wook is convicted, he revealed that he never kills Dong-sik's sister. Things become complicated when Jin-wook is murdered in his cell. Furthermore, Nam Sang-bae, the police chief of Manyang police station is also murdered amid the suspicion that he killed Jin-wook for some reasons.

Dong-sik managed to locate where Jin-wook buried his sister body after his sickly mother revealed it in her sleep. After a forensic examination, Dong-sik and Joo-won realized that Jin-wook was telling the truth as Dong-sik's sister was killed by a hit-and-run, which is a huge mismatch to Jin-wook's method of killing. At the same time, Joo-won catches wind of the corrupted conspiracy between his father, Lee Chang-Jin and Do Hae-Won to profit off the land development scheme in Manyang.

After Park Jung-Je confesses that he ran over Dong-sik's sister, Joo-won reveals to Dong-sik that Jung-Je is innocent as Jong-Je was turned into a scapegoat by Chang-Jin to undermine his mother. Joo-won and Dong-sik suspect Chang-Jin had something to do with Jin-wook's death after they found out that he did visit Jin-wook at the time of his death.

Joo-won sneaks a recording device inside Chang-Jin's car and overhears the entire conspiracy his own father cooked off all these years, including the cover-up of Dong-sik's murder. Joo-won reveals everything to an enraged Dong-sik and they make plan to bring down all the conspirators together. Eventually, they corner both Councilwoman Do Hae-Won and Chang-Jin with many corruption charges during the land development project in Manyang. Chang-Jin himself confesses the real culprit of the Dong-sik's younger sister and Ki-Hwan role in framing Dong-sik.

The recording of Chang-Jin's confession is then submitted to the police and media, driving Ki-Hwan's career and ambition for the seat of Minister of Justice into complete ruin.

Utterly defeated and damned, he attempted to pull the trigger to end his life but Joo-Won stops his father and promptly arrests him, finally bringing justice for Dong-sik's sister after 20 years.
