“ | The forests, the oceans and the sky all weep so vehemently that I can no longer stand it. It's impossible to co-exist with humans any longer. The Earth knows there are some humans who are kind to the planet, but how much does that insignificant amount of affection help? | „ |
~ Hanami explaining their motives. |
Hanami is a major antagonist in the anime/manga series Jujutsu Kaisen. They are one cursed spirits (along with Jogo, Mahito, and Dagon) who want the extinction of humanity. Hanami, unlike their allies, wants to get rid of not because they want to replace humanity with cursed spirits, but because of the mistreatment of nature.
Hanami is voiced by the late Atsuko Tanaka in the Japanese version of the anime and by Marie Westbrook.
Personality[]
Hanami is a curse born from humans fear of land and earth based natural disasters. In contrast to the mostly misanthropic and hedonistic nature of many cursed spirits who simply lived to eat and grow stronger, Hanami had a genuine goal: to take back the planet from the human's who had devastated the ecosystem for centuries. In addition, Hanami, Jogo, Dagon, and Mahito all desired for cursed spirits to emerge as the dominant species.
Hanami did not seem to bear the same hatred for humans that Mahito and Jogo did. Regardless, they believed that curses were the true humans, and because of that belief they were still willing to attack students of Jujutsu and Kyoto High and massacre innocent civilians in Shibuya for the sake of their goals. Hanami also recalled Mahito's words in the middle of the fight with Itadori Yuuji and Aoi Todo, and they admitted that they were finally beginning to enjoy battling sorcerers.
Biography[]
Fearsome Womb Arc[]
Hanami attended a meeting with Pseudo-Geto, Jogo and dagon where Geto explains why the cursed spirits need Sukuna and Gojo's sealing so that they can defeat the sorcerers. Some time later when Jogo through Gojo Hanami comes and saves Jogo. Hanami, Pseudo-Geto and Mahito used the headless Jogo to play football while Hanami play as a goalie.
Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc[]
Afterwards, Hanami meets with Mahito, Juzo, and Haruta to plan an attack on Jujutsu High School, hoping to retrieve Sukuna's fingers that fit with the three Wombs of the Death Image.
As the events of Kyoto Goodwill begin, Hanami and her allies launched an attack on the high school. Hanami going to the place decides to fight with the students, after starting Toge tries to immobilize him with a cursed speech where the students then create a distance in which Noritoshi, being able to manipulate blood, starts attacking Hanami. However, Noritoshi's attacks fail because the shell on Hanami's head is hard, so Megumi decides to cut off his arm, but it fails as well as Hanami can regenerate. Suddenly, Hanami uses telepathy, explaining that he is a being born of the earth and wishes nature to be safe from humans, and suggests that all jujutsu students can be sages through death.
After this speech, Hanami starts chasing the students using roots and creates his wooden balls by throwing each student at them. Toge manages to interrupt his attack, allowing Noritoshi to lightly injure him, revealing Hanami's weak spot. The students decide to take advantage of this weakness, thinking they can defeat him, so they distract him by climbing onto rooftops, and Megumi summons her shikigami to attack Hanami. Toge tried to incapacitate Hanami once again but fails because his throat is affected by the side effects of cursed speech.
When Toge was incapacitated, the students had nothing to hold Hanami up so he had an advantage over the other students by piercing Nue with two wood balls and knocking Noritoshi down by smashing his face through the tiles. Noritoshi is overpowered so Hanami decides to finish him off by sending three wooden balls at him but fails as Megumi grabs Noritoshi before Hanami sends protruding wooden spikes into the roof.
