“ | Lucy, I loved your mother... but she stopped being your mother when she left home, and she took you into danger. | „ |
~ Hank attempting to justify his actions to Lucy |
“ | You've seen what it's like up here. Everyone equally afraid, equally miserable. Forced to do horrible things in order to survive. Lucy... I had to make a choice. Between their violent world and our peaceful one. And I believe, Lucy, I know I made the right choice. If the problem with the world is factions endlessly fighting, endlessly at war, then what is the solution but to get rid of the factions? To make the world us, only ours to shape. | „ |
~ Hank revealing Vault-Tec's motives to Lucy and his most famous quote. |
Overseer Henry "Hank" MacLean is the main antagonist of Amazon Prime's television series Fallout, based on the video game franchise by Bethesda of the same name.
He was once an executive assistant of Vault-Tec and the former overseer of Vault 33 in 2296. He is also the father of protagonist, Lucy, and her brother, Norm MacLean.
He was portrayed by Kyle MacLachlan, who also played Dale Cooper's doppelganger in Twin Peaks, Earl Raymond Diggs in Tales from the Crypt, Cliff Vandercave in the 1994 The Flintstones film, King Claudius in the 2000 film adaptation of Hamlet, Calvin L. Johnson in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Isaac Izzard in The House with a Clock in its Walls, and Donald Love in Grand Theft Auto III.
History[]
Background[]
Hank MacLean was born before the Great War and worked for Vault-Tec as the executive assistant for Barb Howard. He meet Cooper Howard, Hollywood actor and husband of his boss, while picking up Barb's dry cleaning, which he stated that he is a massive fan of his film and asked for his signature.
During the eve of the Great War, he entered a cryonic sleep after being chosen by a group of Vault-Tec employees chosen by Bud Askins for Vault 31. He was released from his sleep on August 9, 2268 and was later on elected as the overseer of Vault 33. He eventually married an inhabitant of Vault 33, and had two children with her; Lucy and Norm.
One day, Hank's wife Rose became suspicious of Hank, and decided to leave the vault with Lucy and Norm. She eventually came across the community of Shady Sands, and met Lee Moldaver. Though the 3 were happy, Hank came after them, took Lucy and Norm back, and bombed Shady Sands, destroying the New California Republic, and turning Rose into a feral ghoul. However, his children were so young, they had no recollection of the event.
Season 1[]
Years later, Vault 33 had it's annual trade, in which a member of Vault 32 comes to Vault 33 and marries one of the inhabitants, in this case, an older Lucy. However, Vault 32 was killed, and a group of raiders led by Moldaver pretended to be them instead, kidnapping Hank and killing many members of Vault 33. Though Hank is not seen for most of the season, his kidnapping spurs Lucy to act and leave the vault setting the series into motion.
In the season finale, Lucy encounters a caged Hank in Moldaver's lair, and gives her the head of Siggi Wilzig, an Enclave scientist who injected himself with renewable energy. Moldaver then tells Lucy the entire truth about Hank's deeds, and shows her the mutated Rose. Hank attempts to plead with Lucy, but she merely tells him to give Moldaver the code. Then, Moldaver's hideout is raided by the Brotherhood of Steel. Maximus returns and frees Hank, much to Lucy's displeasure. Hank then dons Power Armor and attempts to make Lucy leave with him, but is attacked by Maximus, whose family was killed in the Shady Sands bombing. Hank knocks him out, but is attacked by Cooper, who is now a Ghoul, who recognizes him. Cooper lets Hank escape in order to follow him to his family.
Hank is seen in the finale looking at the remains of Las Vegas.
Personality[]
At the beginning, MacLean seemed to be a reasonable authority figure, a lovely father and husband. He always thought about the best for his children and the shelter, even seeing Lucy as his pride.
However, behind all that façade, hides a vile, possessive and power-hungry man who even had no qualms about bombing an entire city just because they welcomed his wife and to hide that the civilization was being reconstructed. When Lucy discovers the truth, all respect she had for her father turns into hatred.
