Dai ryo ja!
~ Happosai's battle cry.

Happosai (八宝斎, Happōsai?) is the main antagonist of the anime and manga series Ranma ½

He is an over 100-year old martial arts genius and founder of the "Anything Goes Martial Arts", as well as a notorious sex pest. He was the martial arts teacher of the two main characters' respective fathers Soun Tendo and Genma Saotome, who tried to get rid of him, only to return to pester them at the Tendo Dojo years later. Upon return, he becomes arguably the archenemy of the series protagonist Ranma Saotome.

He is amongst the strongest martial artists in the series, with mere handful of characters being able to contest his abilities. However, as he is very heedless, he is much more easily defeated by outsmarting him than trying to take him on by force.

The severity of Happosai's misdeeds fluctuates between extremes, going from a minor inconvenience of the moment to subjecting Ranma to some of the worst perils he faces in the entire series. However, his most common misdemeanor is that of sexual deviancy; going around groping random women and stealing their lingerie.

He was voiced by late Ichirō Nagai in the Japanese version and Paul Dobson in the English version.

History[]

Even in his youth, Happosai was a lecherous and thieving troublemaker, with many of his actions from this time setting up for future trouble for Ranma and others to deal it. In his late teens, he tried to make advances at Cologne unsuccessfully, including one time which prompted Cologne to use the "Hiryū Shōten Ha" technique to jettison Happosai away.

Some 18 years before the events of the main series, Happosai would visit Jusenkyo and help a woman deliver a baby. Unwittingly, Happosai decided to bathe the newborn child at the most accursed spring in Jusenkyo: The "Niuhōmanmaorennīchuan" or spring of drowned "yeti holding an eel and crane while riding an ox" and giving its transformation curse to the child. Due to the laws of the village, the first person to give the newborn their first bath will be allowed to name them, and Happosai would name the child "Pantyhose Taro".

Around the same time Genma Saotome and Soun Tendo had become Happosai's students. However, lot of this supposed training was senseless abuse or simply using them as fall-guys for Happosai's disruptive public behavior. Eventually, Genma and Soun decide to turn against their master. Their chance comes when one day, Happosai ends up drinking too much, allowing them to tie him up in a basket and seal him away in a cave with explosives -- despite the fact that they could have easily killed him (which would have ensured beyond all doubt that he would never bother them again) in the vulnerable state he was in at the time. For many years Happosai stayed locked away until the seal was broken and he escaped.

Returning to pester Soun and Genma[]

Happosai reaches Furinkan and finds Soun and Genma. After making their lives a living hell, Ranma decided to intervene and quickly found he was no match for Happosai.

Meeting Hinako Ninomiya[]

While breaking into a hospital to steal lingerie of hospital nurses, Happosai runs into the sickly Hinako Ninomiya, whom he teaches her the metabolism altering techniques.

TBA

Personality[]

Although he is a childish old man driven by base hedonism, he is still a clever schemer and an indisputably powerful martial arts master.

Happosai loves to steal women's undergarments. He has a large collection of bras and panties that he carries around in a large sack. He can often be found groping women and making a nuisance of himself. In fact, if he doesn't touch a woman regularly, he becomes sick and weak.

Trivia[]

  • Happosai can be broken down to "eight treasures together," possibly a joke about his panty collection. “Sai” is a kanji character used for the end of pen names of some kinds of masters (In this case, a master of martial arts). "Happosai" is also a Chinese sidedish.
  • His English Voice Actor, Paul Dobson also voices Naraku from InuYasha.
