Dexter Erotoph, also known as Dexter The Exterminator and Happy Fella, is a major antagonist in the 2018 webseries, Spooky Month.

While initially seeming to appear as a normal, affable exterminator at first glance, he is in fact a mentally disturbed man who only joined the job to fulfill his sadistic urges to kill, doing so by killing pests after capturing them. This is made more apparent after he possesses the Happy Fella doll and slowly becomes more unstable as he is deprived of his killing.

He was voiced by Metamaniac.

Appearance[]

As a human, Dexter wore a yellow hazmat suit and grey gas mask with green lenses, as well as a yellow Gatsby cap. He wore black boots and orange gloves, as well as carrying a brown rucksack around full of his tools. Without his uniform, he had short black hair and wore round glasses, having a cataract in one eye possibly from an animal attack.

As a doll, Dexter appeared like a regular Happy Fella, having fair skin, freckles, a prominent cleft chin, short brown hair as well as wearing blue overalls and a yellow shirt, although unlike other Happy Fellas, his expression was more crazed with eyebags and messy hair, as well as having a cataract in one eye.

Personality[]

Despite initially seeming like an affable, happy-go-lucky exterminator, Dexter is secretly a deranged and sadistic individual, looking for a way to vent his murderous urges out, doing this by killing animals as an exterminator despite it not being part of his job. He also possesses a criminal record, possibly for hurting others, implying he's willing to do whatever it takes to satisfy himself. This trait is brought out even more as when deprived of killing as the Happy Fella, he becomes irate and aggressive, attacking innocent bystanders, such as Kevin, and slowly becoming more insane as the episode progresses.

Dexter does have standards though, seemingly only willing to harm animals initially judging by how he repeatedly writes that he can't kill Skid and Pump as they are children in one of the hidden pictures from links in the Spooky Month episodes, and is disgusted when he misinterprets Roy's demand of Skid and Pump handing over their coats as him wanting to steal their clothes. It also seems that he dislikes cats, remarking that he can kill cats and as a doll, attempting to convince Skid to buy a cat possibly so he can kill it.

Biography[]

Background[]

For the most part, Dexter Erotoph's past is a mystery like many other Spooky Month villains. However, it is revealed that he always had murderous urges, which ended him up with a criminal record and possibly one jail sentence. Sometime before the events of Spooky Month: Unwanted Guest, Dexter decides to channel his sadistic needs into becoming an exterminator, capturing pests for a living before killing them later at home. It's revealed in Hollow Sorrows that Dexter has a mother who keeps cats and, while doting of him, is unaware of his sadistic urges and thus lets him play with her cats.

Spooky Month[]

Spooky Month: Unwanted Guest[]

Dexter makes an appearance as a supporting character in this episode, being called upon by Lila to get rid of what she believes is a rat in the attic (who is actually Moloch, a demon that Skid and Pump prank-called into the mortal realm years ago). Dexter introduces himself, with Lila temporarily being horrified when she realizes he said he kills cats, but he quickly reassures her he loves them, although not even 10 seconds later he contradicts himself by claiming he is a dog person when asked what kind of cats he likes.

As Dexter maniacally lays the rat trap, he is ambushed by Moloch and possessed, with the demon using his body to attack Lila and the kids. However, he and Moloch are later killed when Pump tricks him into snapping his own neck, with Dexter's spirit possessing the Happy Fella, while his body is taken for an autopsy by an unknown third party as he is reported missing by the police.

Spooky Month: Deadly Smiles[]

Following the events of the previous episode, it seems that Skid and Pump and the Happy Fella now spend a lot of time together, with the kids seeming aware of the doll's sentience but believing it's a normal thing for dolls to do, with them doing things like drawing together, watching TV and playing games. However, unbeknownst to them, Dexter, deprived of his killing is slowly becoming more deranged, trying to convince Skid to get a cat from his mom Lila even though he doesn't even like cats.

Serving as the main antagonist of the episode, the Happy Fella is dragged along with Skid to Pump's house when Lila drops him off to play. Whilst they go to grab crayons to draw with from Pump's sister, the Happy Fella takes advantage of this and steals a kitchen knife, hoping to restart his killing spree. He attempts to stab Pump's grandpa, Mr. Wonder, but only ends up hitting the couch thanks to his small stature, and with Skid arriving, he drags the Happy Fella to Pump's room to draw with them.

The kids share their drawings, but are noticeably disturbed when they realize the Happy Fella drew a picture of him holding a bloodied knife standing over the dead bodies of Skid and Pump, but Pump simply remarks that scary dolls are spooky and doesn't care. Lost for what to do, the Happy Fella recommends the kids to play the "knife game", which involves stabbing around your hand without hitting it. He gets Skid and Pump to close their eyes and put their hands down, attempting to stab them but they soon realize that they should've gotten the knife. Fortunately, Pump's sister Susie bursts in at the nick of time and seeing the Happy Fella's knife, confiscates it from them as she mistakenly believes the kids are playing with sharp objects, with the doll shedding a small tear.

Going to watch a movie, the kids and the Happy Fella are accidentally let into the horror movie hall by the melancholic and depressed Rick, who forgets to collect their tickets. Desperate to escape, the Happy Fella convinces Skid and Pump that he has to pee and escapes the theatre. However, he's spotted by Frank the child kidnapper who drives up in his van and snags him up just as he tries to attack two homeless men. Frank quickly realises his victim is a doll, which causes the Happy Fella to attack and bite him, but he's knocked out by a punch and dropped into Jack and John's police car.

At the police station, the Happy Fella is sneezed on by John, but determined to continue his killing spree, he steals cell door keys and, using a stolen switchblade, attempts to kill the thieves arrested in the second episode. However, Jack walks in on them, causing the doll to act like a dead toy and drop the knife, so he quickly takes the doll, knife and keys away before locking the thieves up again.

Jack drops the doll of at the Candy Club, giving it to Kevin. The Happy Fella reawakens and, grabbing a candy corn, stabs him in the leg. Kevin manages to throw him into a wall of lollipops, but he shatters a lollipop and try to use it to attack him. Thinking fast, Kevin chews a load of gumballs and spits the gum at the Happy Fella, blinding him before throwing him into the back alley. However, he discovers a cat in the alley and attempts to kill it, only for Roy to pick up the Happy Fella, mistaking him for a regular doll. Confused by why it's walking and laughing, the Hatzgang come across Skid and Pump who are told their doll was thrown into the back alley after arriving to call the police to search for the doll. However, Roy insists that they give him their clothes in exchange for the doll, leading the other Hatzgang members and the Happy Fella to scold him in disgust, but Roy clarifies that he only wants their sweaters, with all of them quickly apologising.

Agreeing to the deal, the kids bring the Happy Fella back to Pump's house, with Lila arriving to fetch them, as well as Skid dragging the doll back home as well, although he attempts to hide. Wanting to play with him, the Happy Fella breaks free of their grasp and enters a villainous breakdown, ranting about how they keep stopping him from fulfilling his murderous urges and how he's tired of their goofy antics. Lila walks in on them, but in a fit of rage, the doll yells at her for not getting the cat. Skid and Pump, angry at the doll's rudeness and how he keeps getting them in trouble, argue with him. However, the Happy Fella has a knife and urges the kids on, but fortunately Lila intervenes and saves them from it, running away with the kids as he slashes at them with his knife, escaping to the attic.

However, Skid and Pump, still angry at the doll, blow raspberries at him, causing him to discover them, although a mannequin opportunely falls onto his head, distracting him. Escaping into the kitchen, Lila formulates a plan to stop him, with the kids luring him into the kitchen and her stabbing him in the head with a knife. However, the Happy Fella simply laughs at her efforts as he is a doll and lacks vital organs. Fortunately, the kids push him into the oven and with Lila turning on the heat, agonisingly melt his plastic body until he's nothing more than a charred mess (mirroring Pump's question in the previous episode of whether the doll would scream if he burned it). At this moment, Lila's friend Jaune arrives with a second Happy Fella as she remembers Skid and Pump shared one and wanted them both to have one, with Dexter promptly possessing it and attempting to break out of the box. However, he is thwarted once again as Jaune quickly tosses the doll in the oven, killing Dexter once and for all.

Spooky Month: Tender Treats[]

Dexter himself doesn't appear, but a notice of his disappearance appears on the TV. In the Spooky Month ARG, it is shown that his body was brought for an autopsy, but thanks to Moloch's possession his body is near impossible to dissect, with his skin becoming rock hard and his blood igniting upon contact with air, as well as his body emanating an aura of dread.

Spooky Months: Hollow Sorrows[]

Dexter is mentioned by his mother Michelle as she mourns his disappearance, with Father Gregor praying for him to be safe and be found soon. Later on, Moloch possesses Dexter’s corpse once again along with his mother’s to try and convince Father Gregor to give up Skid and Pump, though the priest sees through the lies and sprays the demon with holy water, forcing him to escape. The burnt remains of the Happy Fella are contained in a bucket seen in Skid's attic but as the doll's eyes still resemble Dexter's, it's possible that Dexter still possesses what remains of the doll and is awaiting his revenge.

Trivia[]

  • Dexter's doll form is an obvious parody of Chucky, while his appearance as an exterminator might parody Delbert McClintock from Arachnophobia.
  • Despite hating cats, Dexter might have had a pet cat once, as seen in his photo on his missing notice. It's likely that this was instead, his mother's cat.
  • While Dexter's possession of the Happy Fella is never explicitly stated in the episode, the Happy Fella's voice role is listed in the credits as "H. Fella (Dexter)", showing that it is his spirit possessing the doll.
  • It is confirmed that he has ASPD (Antisocial Personality Disorder).
  • Dexter seems to emanate an aura of dread to animals as a recording of him shows all of his mom's cats fleeing upon his arrival.
