Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, better known as Harley Quinn, is a major character in the Batman: Arkham franchise and one of the titular main protagonists of its 2024 spin off video game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. She was the Joker's former henchwoman and girlfriend.

Harley was highly devoted to the Joker even after his death (despite the Clown Prince of Crime's highly abusive and manipulative treatment of her) and sought revenge on Batman, blaming him for her lover's demise. Harley also took over Joker's gang along with many of his other responsibilities.

She was voiced by the late Arleen Sorkin - who also voiced the character in the DC Animated Universe - in Batman: Arkham Asylum, Tara Strong in Batman: Arkham City, Batman: Arkham Origins, Batman: Arkham Knight, and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League; and Hynden Walch - who also voiced the character in the animated series The Batman - in Batman: Assault on Arkham.

History[]

Harley was initially hired as a psychologist located at Blackgate Penitentiary before she turned to a new life of crime with her future partner-in-crime and boyfriend, the Joker. On Christmas Eve when Joker first started causing mayhem in Gotham, he was successfully captured by Batman and immediately sent to Blackgate. There, he was evaluated by Harley, and he started to explain to her his fun with Batman. However, in his speech, he intended to leave the subject ambiguous, while playfully twisting his monologue about fighting Batman to make it sound like he was flirting with her. Seduced by her patient, Harley was successfully manipulated into letting the Joker go, and wreak havoc once more.

Trivia[]

In one of the Arkham City pre-order commercials for GameStop, Harley is the narrator.
When you enter the Joker's Funhouse and head up to his office, Harley's old outfit from Arkham Asylum will be displayed. On the ground to your left, there is a "Fruitful Endeavor" pregnancy test that reads "positive." Also, if you find the pregnancy test before the game is complete, Harley will sing her own customized version of "Hush Little Baby" during the credits. In Harley Quinn's Revenge however, there are several negative pregnancy tests, and a crib with Scarface painted like Joker. Also, inside the crib there a box stating "WARNING: Test may result in false positive". This heavily hints that Harley is not actually pregnant, and Scarface is probably the "baby" she is singing to in the credits of the original story mode of the game.
When a mechanical Harley intercom is activated, she responds believing it's a henchman, and does so until she gets too annoyed. After the Joker's death, if any intercoms are left, she always replies, but doesn't talk, rather she only sobs.
Harley is one of the only villains to appear in all four games, the other being Joker, Riddler, and Killer Croc.
- She and Riddler also appeared in Arkham Origins, although prior their transformations into their later infamous identities.
One major inconsistency between Arkham Origins and Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham trilogy is the origin of the Joker-Harley Quinn relationship. In the interview tapes found in Arkham Asylum it is similar to Mad Love, the comic book story and its animated adaptation from Batman: The Animated Series; radically different to how it is later portrayed in Arkham Origins.
Throughout the games, there's running gag of her being defeated in one move every time she personally tried to confront Batman.
While Harley was emphatically in love with the Joker, even after his death, throughout the Arkham Trilogy, in Kill the Justice League, she displays a loss of love and disdain for him; perhaps in the 5-year time skip, she had finally realized that Joker wasn’t a good person to begin with. Although, seems unlikely considering she spent close to 10 years with him, never questioning his morality, collaborating with his schemes, and even killing medical staff that failed to help him even though he didn't tell her to do it; she also genuinely mourned for both him and even the patients that were being converted into Jokerized versions of themselves. If she realized that the Joker never truly loved her and only saw her as a pawn, it was a development not competently delivered.
- This debate had drawn further criticism, as the version of Harley in SS:KTJL was closer to the anti-heroic version seen in the comics since approximately 2012, and the adult animation version, which are a vastly different characterisations than the Arkhamverse Harley; despite her seemingly innocuous eccentricties, she was a far darker version of the character, thus too far to believably become an anti-hero, at least within the span of 5 years in maximum security prison.
Despite Harley primarily being in love with a man (also, had a sexual fling with the ultimately fake Deadshot in Assault on Arkham), when she sees Wonder Woman, she expresses a lustful reaction; this is likely a reference to the mainstream comic book Harley who was made bisexual to change her friendship with Poison Ivy into a romantic and sexual relationship.
Sometime after Arkham Knight, she had somehow managed contact with fellow inmate Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow, and convinced or rather coerced him to learn about the components of his fear toxin.
She somehow knew that Batman called her "not very bright," even repeating it as a snide remark before executing him, even though she never heard him say the original line. It could be a 4th wall gimmick or simply a plot hole.
