“ | My name is Harley Sawyer. I'm called "the Doctor." When I look at this company we've built, I do not feel proud. Declining profits, failed experiments, people are constantly seeing things they shouldn't. How is that anything less than complete failure on our part? It's pathetic. | „ |
~ Harley Sawyer in VHS 1. |
“ | Giant toys. We can increase our workforce and simultaneously decrease the number of lawsuits and people on our payroll, IF... the people we have working... aren't. People. | „ |

“ | Mortality is the curse of the weak, the fire that incinerates the flesh. I strive to snuff that flame. Call me a monster, but I am simply a man who escaped incineration, and embraced the infinite! | „ |
~ Harley Sawyer about his desire for immortality in the trailer for Phase 2: Incineration for Project: Playtime. |
Harley Sawyer, also known as the Doctor, is the overarching antagonist of the Poppy Playtime franchise.
He is a former high-ranking employee of Playtime Co., as well as the founder and leader of the Bigger Bodies Initiative, the catalyst that had led to the company's experiments revolving around orphaned children, as well as what led to the company's eventual downfall. Realising that the company was a failure, Sawyer tried to save it through his experiments, turning people of all ages into living toys that would serve Playtime.
He is voiced by Baldwin Williams Jr., who was uncredited for playing the Crooked Energy in Raising Dion. In the Brazilian Portuguese dub, he is voiced by Guilherme Briggs, who also voiced James in the Brazilian Portuguese dub of Murder Drones.
Personality[]
Through his recording from the VHS tape, it can be inferred that Harley intends to replace all of the company's employees with "living toys" in the shape of their mascots in order to eliminate the need to pay employees or spend money on maintenance on the company's working conditions.
He also shows himself to be a very callous, power hungry and arrogant man, proposing to have orphaned children being turned into giant toys to work for the company endlessly, and disregards the well-being of his subordinates, caring only about the livelihood of the company, sacrificing even innocent lives in his endeavors.
Despite this, he is extremely intelligent, cunning and manipulative, using Playcare into gathering children for his experiments and turning them into monstrous and hostile creatures to his work at the Bigger Bodies Initiative.
In his tape conversation with the Prototype in Chapter 3, Harley Sawyer shows an extreme admiration and interest in Experiment 1006, seeing discovering things about him as “exciting” while showing a deep disinterest about feeling remorse for any of his actions (including turning adults, children and possibly infants into Toys).
Biography[]
Past[]
The past of Harley Sawyer is shrouded in mystery. However it’s known that as a young man Sawyer was once one apart of Elliot Ludwig’s Young Geniuses Program. It was an initiative made by Ludwig to mentor young and bright minds to “embrace the science of the future and tackle the universes most unanswerable questions”. Eventually he would grow up to become an esteem and respected neuroscientist as an adult.
On January 15th, 1990, he would soon be contacted by Playtime Co’s head of innovation Leith Pierre. Leith knew about his past history with Playtime and offered a job at the company. However, Sawyer soon became disillusioned and ashamed at the company. The profits were declining, many of their experiments were failing and people were seeing things that they shouldn’t. So he had come up to the higher-ups at Playtime Co. to propose a solution to the ongoing problems surrounding the company. Sawyer proposed the idea to make giant toys, which would allow Playtime CO. to save money by having the sentient toys take the place of the employees, thanks to which they wouldn't have to worry about being sued or having to pay their employees.
According to Harley in another VHS tape, many employees had deemed the initiative to be an "impossibility", though he would eventually prove it a success following the creation of Boxy Boo, the first successful experiment. Following this, Harley assigned Boxy as a guardian in the factory to prevent others from discovering the truth about the initiative, fulfilling the creature's hankering for human flesh. He had also sent Boxy after employee Rowan Stoll to have him killed once he started working against Playtime and trying to reveal their secrets.
Leadership[]
After Sawyer had proposed the Bigger Bodies Initiative to Playtime, he started leading the company and had decided to dedicate an entire portion of the factory to testing orphans, which would be dubbed "the Game Station". In this room, a toy would be assigned to the orphan, and they'd be tested in three different minigames, each of which would test the orphan's intelligence, reaction time, and physical endurance. As the orphans played the games, their progress would be monitored and written down, and would then be sent over to Stella Greyber. If the orphan performed well, the scientists would then use poppy gas and electrical shocks to turn them into giant toys, though some of the other experiments were also created using other employees, some of which were forced into getting involved with despite their hesitancy. During this time he met an orphan named Quinn Navidson whom he noticed held back when he partook in the Game Station. Sawyer determined that Quinn was holding back because he wanted people to have lesser expectations of him. Sawyer took this as an opportunity to manipulate the young boy and encourage him to do well in the Game Station. Ultimately, Sawyer transformed Quinn into experiment 1166 aka Yarnaby. Sawyer then isolated and restricted Yarnaby’s contact with anyone else but himself in order to groom him into being his personal bodyguard.
Also under Sawyer's rule, Playtime Co. had created multiple experiments that would aid with different parts of the factory, with Huggy Wuggy serving as the factory's security, Mommy Long Legs serving as the Game Room's host, CatNap serving as Home Sweet Home's guardian as well as gassing kids to sleep so they could be taken and turned into toys, and Boxy Boo serving as a last-resort to getting rid of any employees that were aware of his initiative. In case any of the experiments had ever rebelled, Playtime Co. had placed Toy Parts inside of the Puzzle Pillars in order to continue building giant toys. Despite this, one of their experiments didn't want the Bigger Bodies Initiative to continue and consistently interfered with Sawyer's initiative, sabotaging the company's progress himself.
During his investigation and experimentation on the Prototype, Dr. Sawyer begins a conversation on him, where he indirectly admits he feels no regret for his mistreatment of the Toys. Sometime afterwards it was stated that Sawyer was “removed” from the company implying he was either fired or something worse happened to him.
Legacy[]
In the years following Sawyer taking control of the company, several of the experiments had began escaping from the company, including an incident on July 18th, 1992, where Huggy Wuggy had escaped through ventilation shafts and killed numerous security guards. On August 8th, 1995, the Prototype had made a massive rebellion that led to the deaths of many Playtime CO. employees and scientists, which forced many of the company's higher ups to flee the factory.
Initially after the incident, Leith Pierre had sent Resource Extraction Specialists to collect the Toy Parts found in the Puzzle Pillars, though the Prototype would send the Initiative's starving experiments after those that participated. Things had gotten so bad that Playtime Co. had stopped sending people back to the factory altogether. The outcry from concerned citizens and the haunting questions surrounding the incident left Playtime Co. with no choice but to make the difficult decision to permanently close its doors. Meanwhile, the experiments that were left behind at the factory were left to starve, lacking a steady source of food. To survive, they started eating each other, and that's how some of them were able to survive to 2005, the year where the game takes place.

“ | It has been 3 months since 1188's procedure, and one month since his introduction to Playcare. I'm pleased to say he's taken to his tasks like a fish to water, meeting virtually every one of the objectives we set out for him. The initial procedure had its challenges, taking 4 hours longer than we had hoped, followed by a rather tumultuous adjustment period. Still, his mental test metrics were virtually unchanged from pre-op. Now that he's "on the job" as it were, we can say for certain that the outcome has been a resounding success, rivaling that of even 1170. |

Trivia[]
- It's still unknown what happened to him, but many fans think that Harley Sawyer actually turned himself into one of the Toys and will appear in the future as an antagonist.
- Some fans have theorized that the Prototype and CatNap turned him into DogDay in Chapter 3 as a punishment. This is mostly due to both Dr. Sawyer and DogDay being voiced by Baldwin Williams Jr.
