~ Harma Dogshead |
Harma Dogshead is a minor antagonist in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. She is a vicious wildling that has warred with Rattleshirt before eventually Mance Rayder managed to make peace between them. A violent woman, she kills dogs for little reason, just because she hates them. She kills a dog every fortnight and uses their heads as totems for her banner. She is the sister of the raider Halleck. She had no counterpart in the Game of Thrones television series adaptation.
Biography[]
A feared raider of the free folk, she has fought Rattleshirt in the past before Mance Rayder made peace between the two, and both became his captains out of desire to escape the Others and their wights. Neither Harma nor her brother Halleck like Mance.
During the march of Mance Rayder's host, Harma leads the free folk van, marching south of the river Milkwater. She is present along with Mance, Jon Snow, and other free folk leaders at the destroyed Night's Watch's camp at the Fist of the First Men, during which most of the Black Brothers have been massacred by the army of the dead in the Fight at the Fist.
During the wildling invasion of the Wall, she is spotted at the abandoned Night's Watch castle, Woodswatch-by-the-Pool. After surviving her raid, she returns to Mance Rayder's main army, which is then camped in the Haunted Forest north of Castle Black. During the Battle Beneath the Wall, when the Black Brother steward Jon Snow comes to negotiate with Mance, Harma urges the King-Beyond-the-Wall to kill him. The negotiations are interrupted by the arrival of Night's Watch's rangers from Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, which leads Harma, Mance, and other free folk warriors and captains to go to battle against them. As they are lured outside the Haunted Forest, it turns out to be bait, as the wildling army and the giants face an army of 1,500 southron knights led by King Stannis Baratheon. Harma is killed in battle, and her head is put on a spike.
Harma's brother, Halleck, bends the knee to Stannis, along with less than 1,000 other wildlings. They are allowed to take residence in the deserted Mole's Town, in the lands of the Gift. Later, Halleck and other wildlings decide to join the defense of the Wall under Lord Commander Snow's orders. Halleck's reasoning is that since he and Harma fought for Mance while disliking him at the same time, there is no reason for him not to do the same with Jon Snow. This convinces Harma's cousins and many of her clan followers to join Halleck in returning to Castle Black with the Lord Commander.
