I don’t want to be this kind of animal anymore.
~ Harry drunkenly ranting to himself shortly before losing his memory.
I don't want to come back.
~ Harry’s hanged corpse speaking to him in a nightmare.
I want to have fuck with you.
~ Harry’s failed attempt to flirt with Klaasje Amandou, his most infamous quote.

Lieutenant double-yefreitor Harrier "Harry" Du Bois is the main protagonist of the 2019 role-playing video game Disco Elysium.

He is a lieutenant of the Revachol’s Citizens Militia who, after a violent and destructive multi-day bender, loses all memory of himself and the world around him. After awakening in a trashed hostel room, Harry meets a police lieutenant named Kim Kitsuragi, who informs him that he was sent to Martinaise to investigate and remove a hanged corpse. As the game progresses, more details regarding Harry’s tragic and destructive past come to light, and he may choose to reform himself through his actions or regress further into his vices.

He, along with the Ancient Reptilian Brain, Limbic System, Spinal Cord, and Inland Empire personalities, are voiced by Mikee W. Goodman, who also voices Ruud Hoenkloewen in the same game. His narration and skills are voiced by Lenval Brown, who also voices Sisyphus Prime in Ultrakill.

Personality[]

While Harry's personality during the game is largely determined by the player's choices and how they build his character, numerous details are given about what he was like before his amnesia.

As a young adult, Harry was physically active, outgoing, and somewhat rebellious. During his tenure in the RCM, Harry proved to be highly intelligent and efficient, reaching above the 90th percentile among RCM officers for the number of cases he solved. This commitment came with significant costs, however, as Harry was known to abuse substances while on the job and was generally feared and disliked by many of his colleagues.

Harry was deeply attached and infatuated with his ex-wife, Dora, whose departure caused him to spiral into nihilism and self-destruction. After suffering from amnesia, Harry is constantly haunted by memories of Dora, falling unconscious after reading her letter and reliving her departure in his nightmares. The trauma of losing Dora also persists through his muscle memory and subconscious thoughts, as shown by Harry dialing her number supposedly at random at a rotary phone near the boardwalk. During his nightmares, Harry perceives Dora as Dolores Dei — one of the most influential figures in Elysium's history — implying that Harry's relationship with her bordered on idolization.

In-game, Harry can express a broad range of personality traits, largely dependent on dialogue options and whether he passes or fails certain skill checks. A Thinker archetype, for instance, specializes in encyclopedic knowledge, logical deduction, and spatial awareness but has low emotional intelligence and charisma. Conversely, a Sensitive character is better with words and has a stronger emotional resolve but is mentally unstable and projects personalities onto inanimate objects, most notably the Horrific Necktie.

Throughout the game, Harry may also subscribe to one of four dominant political ideologies: fascism, moralism, ultraliberalism, or communism. These ideologies manifest as "thoughts", which provide both benefits and drawbacks for the player character. They will also influence Harry's interactions with other people and unlocks unique questlines. Harry may, however express contradictory and even paradoxical viewpoints, such as support for both communism and ultraliberalism. This is heavily implied to be a projection of Harry's denial and feelings of inadequacy after Dora's departure.

Biography[]

Background[]

Harry was born in the year ‘07, in Revachol's Old Military Hospital in the Pox. In his teenage years, he joined a street gang known as the Fifteenth Indotribe. By his twenties, Harry became a fan of an emerging music genre known as disco, emulating “The Expression” from one of its superstars, Guillaume Le Million. At some point, Harry was a High School gym teacher in Grand Couron. It was there that he met his future fiancée, Dora Ingerlund, who encouraged him to join the Revachol Citizens Militia. During his eighteen years of service to the RCM, Harry climbed to the rank of lieutenant and was even offered two promotions, both of which declined.

Despite his impressive caseload, Harrier was an erratic substance abuser, which likely contributed to his unstable and violent behavior while on the job. This behavior would eventually cause Dora to leave Harry and move to Mirova. Dora’s departure would deeply haunt Harry for the next six years of his life and further worsen his unstable psyche.

Shortly before the events of the game, Harry and the Major Crimes Unit were called to Martinaise to investigate a hanging. Harry would then order his unit to leave by telling them to “fuck off,” as they “were cramping his style.” Instead of investigating the case, Harry spent the next several days on a self-destructive bender, drinking, ranting, harassing and menacing other patrons, pawning his gun, crashing his police motorcarriage, trashing his room at the Whirling-in-Rags, and screaming words of self-pity. He would then, for reasons unknown, suffer a severe case of amnesia, leading to the events of the game’s story.

Disco Elysium[]

After his amnesic episode, Harry finds himself in a preconscious and dream-like state of mind, depicted as a shapeless, black void. Here, he speaks with the Ancient Reptilian Brain, embodying his basic primal instincts and represented by a sinister and gravelly voice, and his Limbic System, embodying his emotional well-being and represented by a raspy, high-pitched voice. Both plead for Harry not to confront his past and to instead sink further into unconsciousness. The voices resurface throughout the story when Harry is sleeping or loses conscious, alongside the Spinal Cord.

Harry awakens on the floor of a trashed hostel room, suffering a hangover and wearing only his underwear. After getting his bearings and optionally observing his reflection in the mirror, Harry heads downstairs, where he meets a police lieutenant named Kim Kitsuragi. Harry learns that he is a police detective who was assigned to investigating a hanging, and that the body in question was left in its noose for three days due to his negligence. He may also avoid giving Kim a name or invent a fake one on the spot. Kim will then accompany him as they work to remove the body for an autopsy and question the citizens of Martinaise about the hanging.

How Harry handles the investigation and his interpersonal relationships is entirely dependent on his skills and the player's choices. If Harry chooses to confront his past and reform himself, he may choose to pay for the damages at the Whirling, come forward to Kim and his precinct about his lost gun and badge, avoid taking any substances, make peace with Dora's departure, and resolve the case as sufficiently and professionally as possible. If he chooses to listen to his voices and resign himself to nihilism, Harry may continue to exhibit the same destructive behavior that caused his amnesia, damage his relationships with Kim and those around him, and possibly end the game prematurely by dying, abandoning the case, or irreparably tarnishing his reputation.

Endings[]

Depending on Harry's actions throughout the investigations, the game can end in three possible ways.

If Harry successfully warned Kim during the mercenary tribunal and apprehends the perpetrator, he will return to Precinct 41 with his unit while Kim will either return to his own precinct in GRIH or transfer to Harry's precinct. Recovering his gun and badge, extracting a motive from the killer, and remaining entirely focused and sober during the investigation will further improve Harry's standing with the RCM.

If Harry failed to warn Kim, he will be wounded and taken to Precinct 57's infirmary to recover, making him unavailable as Harry's partner for the remainder of the game. Harry may then choose to take Cuno as a partner to the sea fortress. Cuno may then remain in Martinaise after Harry reunites with his unit or join Precinct 41 as a junior officer, assuming Harry persuades Jean Vicquemare.

If Harry goes to the fortress alone and remained sober during the investigation, he will be allowed to return to Precinct 41. If he drank alcohol at any point in the story and chose not to abstain, he will be left in Martinaise.
