Harry Goldfarb is one of the main protagonists of the 1978 book and 2000 film entitled Requiem for a Dream.

He was portrayed by Academy Award winning actor Jared Leto, who also played Angel Face in Fight Club, Junior in Panic Room, the Joker in the DC Extended Universe, Niander Wallace, Jr. in Blade Runner 2049, Michael Morbius in Morbius and the Hatbox Ghost in the 2023 Haunted Mansion film.

Biography[]

In the film, we learn about Harry and his mother Sara Goldfarb. Harry manages to take her television, and hooks up with his friend Tyrone, both of which sell the television for drugs. Sara Goldfarb then buys the television back from the man which they sold it to, while the two are using drugs. We learn about Harries girlfriend, Marion. As the film progresses, we learn about their dreams, in which Harry and Marion want to open a clothes store, for Marion's design works, and Tyrone wants to run away from the ghetto world, and to get approved by his mom. Sara ends up getting invited on her favorite TV show, and she starts a heavy diet, in order to fit in her favorite red dress.

Sara Goldfarb ends up going to a physician, which she heard from her friend. The physician ended up prescribing her amphetamines for her to lose weight. She ends up losing weight in a rapid-rate, and gets excited from all the energy she has. Harry ends up finding out about his mother taking the amphetamines, and tries to tell her to stop, which fails. Sara ends up getting more and more addicted to the amphetamines', to the point of her getting a psychosis.

Tyrone ends up in a shootout, and gets arrested even though he is innocent. Harry ends up using most of their money in order to bail Tyrone out from prison. Because of the shoot-out, heroin becomes much more restricted then before, and the group gets upset dye to not being able to find anywhere to get the drugs. Tyrone ends up finding about a large shipment, which is coming to New York, except the price risen up double-wise. Harry ends up making his girlfriend to have a sexual-relationship with her psychiatrist Arnold, in order from them to get money for drugs. This ultimately ruins their relationship, which they grew.

Sara's has been taking too many drugs, to the point of loosing sense from real-life. She starts hallucinating that shes mocked by the host and the crowd members, which are from the television show, and she's being attacked by her refrigerator. Sara ends up going to the casting agency, and asks when is she being broadcasted on television, which escalates in her getting brought up to a psychiatric ward, where she gets medically treated, but fails to get better. While Harry and Tyrone drive to Miami to buy drugs, which fails dye to Harry having a gangrenous arm. The doctor realizes that Harry is a drug-user, and he tells it to the police, which arrests both of the men.

In New York, Marion sells her body to Big Tim, which humiliates her in various sexual fantasies, in exchange for heroin. Ultimately, all of the four characters are going though their own agony. In prison, Harry gets sent to the hospital, once the police found about his gangrenous arm. In the hospital, there was no hope, and they amputate Harries arm. The next morning, Harry starts crying and asks for Marion to visits him, and he acknowledges that she wont come to visit him. At the same time, Marion is seen in her bed, hugging heroine, Tyrone laying in his cell, thinking of his past, and mother. While Sara is seen still in the hospital thinking of her television show dream. The movie ends with what could of been Harry and Sara hugging on the television show, as they say they love each other.

Personal Life[]

Harry Goldfarb is the only child of Murray and Sarah Goldfarb. He graduated high-school and moved on with his life. His best friend is Tyrone C. Love, a supposed gangster, and his girlfriend is Marion Silver, a designer. All three of them, have been consuming and working on selling drugs, more precisely heroine. Harries mother has no-knowledge in their scheme, and has been supportive of Harry anyhow.

  • In the book, Harry had golden hair. In the film, Harry had black hair.
  • For the 2000 film, Jared Leto had to abstain from sugar and sex for a month to understand withdrawal.
  • Before the film was made, Jared Leto became friends with real-life heroine consumers, to get more knowledge on how to portray Harry Goldfarb the best as he can.
  • Once Marion had sexual-intercourse with her psychiatrist, a scene is seen where Harry and Marion are sitting next to each other silently. However Harry and Marion did make contact at one point, but the director decided to cut the scene out from the film, instead wanting complete silence after the intercourse.
  • Jared Leto in a interview, explained that he had shoot up water, while hanging out with real-junkies for the film. Jared explained that he never would of done anything remote to this again.
  • Him alongside Tyrone C. Love ended up in prison, but of the two, he was the one who had the worst luck when his arm had to be amputated due to gangrene.
