Harry Sinclair is the main antagonist of A History of Violence, a 2024 miniseries as part of the BBC medical drama Casualty.

He is portrayed by Rod Hallett.

Biography[]

Harry Sinclair is a friend of nurse (and show's protagonist) Charlie Fairhead for a number of years.

When Stevie Nash planned to introduce a zero tolerance rule into the hospital when it comes to staff, Sinclair ended up being drafted in on a part-time basis in order to help intervene in any incidents in which the staff are in harms way. Despite seemingly being a decent enough police officer, Stevie begins to suspect that Sinclair is abusing his wife when she is admitted with injuries. It later transpires to be their handicapped son, so is later put into a care system to give breathing space to his parents. But Sinclair is bothered by the admission and later slacks off at the hospital, which forces Stevie to have to deal with an out of control patient on her own.

A few weeks later, Sinclair's wife is admitted again with injuries, which causes Stevie's suspicions of him to resurface. She gets his wife alone and tries to get the information out of her, but when she comes close to a revelation Sinclair returns and puts a stop to it. Sinclair then has Stevie banned from treating his wife, keeping a distance between them and preventing her from getting the truth. When a schizophrenic patient begins to lose control and kick off in the hospital, Sinclair watches from a distance as Stevie is put under extreme pressure. When Stevie opts to drug the patient in question, only then does Sinclair intervene although he knocks the needle out of Stevie's hand. An investigation is put into place over the incident and Stevie is questioned by Charlie over her approach, with Sinclair standing by to observe. When another doctor claims to not have been feeling threatened by the patient, Sinclair accuses Sinclair of assault by forcefully drugging the patient and places her under arrest. Despite her protests, Sinclair cuffs Stevie and leads her through the department to be witnessed by everyone.

Stevie is later suspended from the hospital pending further investigation, and Sinclair resumes his duties, although he is now unpopular with the staff. When he has discomfort over a painful elbow Charlie offers to treat it. Later that day Charlie examines it, and finds an untreated wound and traces of a human tooth, which could only be accomplished if someone was to elbow another in the face. Sinclair denies it is a truth and claims it is a piece of grit. Charlie is suspicious and looks into Sinclair's wife Mel's medical records, and finds that she had a chipped tooth the last time she was admitted. Realising Sinclair is in fact an abuser, Charlie contacts the authorities and they arrest Sinclair, who accuses Charlie of betraying him.

Harry is later released and resumes his duties as a police officer, although Mel takes a restraining order against him. Regardless, he chases her down in his police car to the countryside and she ends up crashing her car into a tree and is badly injured. Harry contemplates calling emergency services, but thinks against it and leaves the scene. He later attends a major car pile up which resulted in a lorry carrying gas cannisters tipping over. When a drug dealer Kyle Marsh attempts to flee the crime scene, he knocks one of the cannisters which causes the lorry to explode and Harry is caught up in the explosion and badly injured. He is taken into hospital. Stevie and Charlie deduce that Harry must know where Mel is due to her disappearing despite being in contact with Stevie. Before Harry is put under, Charlie urges him to do the right thing and disclose her location. Harry whispers the answer to Charlie before passing out.

Harry died of his injuries, although Mel ends up being found and saved. Charlie is unable to attend the funeral due to suffering a stabbing at the hands of Kyle Marsh, although eventually made a recovery and decided to retire from nursing.

Trivia[]

  • Although Harry acts as the main antagonist throughout the miniseries and the rival to Stevie Nash, his presence being removed from the hospital leads to Kyle Marsh finishing off as a major antagonist in A History of Violence.
