The child is blind. He can't see it. He can't even comprehend what Johan saw. He's not like him.
~ Hartmann about Dieter.

Hartmann is a supporting antagonist from the manga and anime series Monster. He is a corrupt German government official who oversaw dehumanizing experiments at the orphanage Kinderheim 511, and after the orphanage's destruction, he seeks to re-create the experiment by adopting and abusing other children.

He is voiced by Masaaki Yajima in the Japanese version. In the English dub, he is voiced by John Snyder.

History[]

He appears to be a friendly, loving father when he first meets Dr. Tenma, as he claims to provide homes for orphans in need. However, it turns out he had a shady past as a member of the East German Ministry of Health, and was appointed the director of 511 Kinderheim, which subjected the children in its care to horrific experiments to turn them into emotionless soldiers. Following the destruction of the orphanage at Johan Liebert's hands, Hartmann was thrilled at Johan's talents, and sought to groom other children into becoming like him.

One of these children is Dieter, a young boy who Hartmann subjects to horrible abuse, which Tenma discovers, and he rescues the boy. Hartmann gloats to Tenma that Johan was a "masterpiece" from the start and denies any responsibility for making him into a monster, before telling Tenma to seek out General Wolf, who was the one who first discovered Johan. Tenma then encourages Dieter to come with him, and he does despite Hartmann threatening to shoot him.

During the events of Another Monster, it's revealed that he was arrested. It's unknown how he got arrested, but it was possible Dieter exposed him or he was caught by the police after the events of Monster.

Personality[]

Hartmann originaly seems like a kind man who is traumatized by the events of Kinderheim 511, but truly, he is just a heartless individual who was actually one of the people behind the orphanage's experiments, who abuses children in horrible ways so they could become like Johan.

Hartmann doesn't seem to see his actions as wrong and thinks that creating heartless children would be something good, and sees Johan's sheer coldness and nihilism as that of a born leader, and wished to do that with Deiter. Hartmann is also able to bring fear to others just by his facial expressions.
