Haruchiyo Akashi, also known as Haruchiyo Sanzu, is a major antagonist in the 2017 Japanese manga series, Tokyo Revengers and its 2021 anime adaptation. He serves as the secondary antagonist in the second and final part of the series' saga, serving as a major antagonist in the Three Deities War arc and the secondary antagonist in the Kanto Manji Gang arc.
He is a member of the Tokyo Manji Gang where he was the Vice-Captain of the Fifth Division under Yasuhiro Muto, not before it was later revealed that he had fanatical idolatry for Mikey and he only worked with him under his order. He would later become Mikey's right-hand man in the Kanto Manji Gang and soon become its No. 2 would they become the dangerous criminal organization known as Bonten in the future. He is also revealed to have known Mikey since their childhood alongside Baji and is the middle brother of Takeomi Akashi and Senju Kawaragi.
He is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese (who also voiced Accelerator in A Certain Magical Index and Ghiaccio in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind)
Appearance[]
As a teenager, Sanzu originally wore the signature Toman uniform consisting of a black-colored attire with a buttoned jacket, baggy pants, and white boots. He even wore a black mask that covered his scars, has long bleach blonde hair (originally rosy pink in the manga), and had downturned eyes.
After the Kanto Manji Gang was formed, he was seen wearing the signature Kanto Manji uniform consisting of a white-colored attire of a long white coat, baggy pants, and boots. It is also revealed that he has a few piercings on his right ear and tied his hair into a ponytail.
As an adult, his hair was styled into a mullet that reached his shoulders, wears business attire, and has the signature Bonten tattoo located on his right forearm. He even has matching piercings on both ears.
In the original timeline, where Mikey passed away due to suffering a childhood accident four years ago, Sanzu had a scar on his left eye instead of his mouth.
After Mikey and Takemichi averts all tragedies in the past, Sanzu's scars disappeared
Personality[]
Sanzu was mostly portrayed as an obedient and stoic individual who stayed by Mucho's side for a long time. However, underneath it was nothing more than a mere facade, as his true nature is a sadistic fanatic loyal to his "liege" Mikey.
While he seemed enigmatically decent, where he seems to rarely talk as often and has a much calmer demeanor, he ends up dropping them the second he kills Mucho for "treason" against his king. He's also shown to be manipulative as he manages to forge his loyalty for Mucho and encourages Mikey to continue following down a path to darkness, despite having loyalty for him.
Any reason for his notorious idolatry for Mikey would be from the time he had his jaw nearly ripped off and became insane or out of genuine loyalty, regardless, he was very inclined and protective of Mikey, or at least the image of him, in order to ensure that his liege will prevail, even if it costs him his own life. This was shown when his future counterpart was shocked about Mikey committing suicide on top of a building and even shouted at him to stop. Despite being devoted to his "king", he didn't hesitate to corrupt him by embracing his "dark urges" and encouraging him to commit such horrible acts both past and future. Despite this, he also happens to have the decency of respecting Mikey's brother, Shinichiro, and kept his secret of being a time-leaper.
As both himself and his future counterpart demonstrated, he takes pure delight in murdering or harming others out of sadism and has a wide lake amount of empathy for those he harmed, especially those whom he found "annoying", like the time he tried to derail the train to crush all Toman members, even his own allies, and killing three members with a gun. He also happens to enjoy mocking others.
Back as a child, he used to be cheerful and bright when he was still friends with Mikey and Baji, though he had to take responsibility for looking after Senju while Takeoshi was away. Unfortunately, when Senju pinned the blame on her brother, Sanzu began disowning his own family members, even his sister, as he would tell other people that he is an only child and refused to acknowledge their presence. The scapegoat act was the reason he disowned Senju and despite the latter apologizing for her actions, he still refused and was more than happy to hit his own sister back.
Overall, present or future, Sanzu is a borderline psychopathic individual who enables Mikey to commit his horrid atrocities in both the Kanto Manji Gang and Bonten. However, despite every timeline, he's always been mad with homicidal intent and fanatism for Mikey, but as revealed in the original timeline before Shinichiro gained the power to time-leap, his descent to madness was out of grief when Mikey was still in a vegetative state.
After Takemichi and Mikey averts tragedies in the past, Sanzu is no longer a psychopath
Abilities[]
- Swordsmanship: After Kanto Manji was formed, Sanzu likely has experiences with legitimate swordsmanship as he was seen carrying and using a katana when fighting his opponents, also unfairly. Besides that, Sanzu seems to have good reflexes and skill in using his katana to slash or strike his enemies on the brink.
- Manipulation: He is shown to be very skilled in manipulating others into gaining their trust, as well as coming up with a facade to keep himself at bay with them. This happened when he stayed loyal to Mucho and pretended to be devoted to his aid, only to find the moment to strike him personally for "defying" Mikey and he was able to encourage Mikey to continue embracing his dark urges.
- Physical strength and fighting prowess: Sanzu's strength and experience in fighting are highly average yet he's capable of thinking on his own feet whether he physically uses his strength or using a weapon like his katana or a gun. He was capable of fighting against the Haitani Brothers and effortlessly defeating his little sister Senju, mainly because he was the one who taught her how to fight and took advantage of that.
- Authority (depending on his position): He originally holds a position in Toman as the Fifth Division's Vice-Captain before the disbandment. Later on, he would be the right-hand of Mikey and Vice-President of the Kanto Manji Gang, Bontens's No. 2 member, and an average member of Tenjiku.
Trivia[]
- He is the second villain to know that Takemichi is a time-leaper, with the very first being his archenemy, Tetta Kisaki. However, it is left unclear how Sanzu knows about time-leaping, which may potentially or presumably hold connections to the debunked theory of Kisaki being a time-leaper. Unfortunately, it's later revealed that he knew connections about Shinichiro, Mikey's older brother, being a time-leaper and was told by him kept it a secret per his wish once he successfully saved Mikey from himself, albeit discovered something is wrong with Mikey.
- While South Terano has (while arguably) the highest kill count in Tokyo Revengers due to his implied past killings of Dino's "enemies", Sanzu came close with the attempt of killing all Toman members and his own allies in the Kanto Manji Gang (except Mikey), hundreds of them, by sabotaging the train tracks and almost had them crushed, though a vision entailing the event had succeeded, by the train cargos. Had this succeeded, Sanzu would've likely surpassed South.
