It is. I felt uneasy about it this whole time… Someone as worthless as me having killed someone to gain attention, and a person who surely had more worth and more of a future than me, at that… But it turns out that I did nothing wrong after all! It wasn't wrong of me to kill her! There was never anything for me to worry about…!
~ Haruka on his first verdict.

Haruka Sakurai is one of ten secondary protagonists in MILGRAM. Having a mental disability, he was soon neglected by his parents and began acting out in hopes of getting attention, growing more and more violent.

He was voiced by Horie Shun.

Biography[]

Past[]

Born in 1997, Haruka's parents were at first overprotective, refusing to admit that he had a mental disability, in turn causing his development to be stunted in an environment that wasn't right for him. However, when he turned 15 and still couldn't read kanji, his parents gave up on him, losing any interest in caring for Haruka, causing him to cause problems in hopes of regaining their attention, which failed countless times. Soon, Haruka began killing animals in hopes of gaining attention, starting with simple insects before slowly moving on to killing others' pets, all the while feeling relieved that life existed that was inferior to himself. He was even pleased upon seeing the pet owners in agony over their pets' deaths, thinking it truly shows that he has a connection to the world. However, soon enough, his crimes came to light, which excited him further as all the attention was directed towards him for his crimes, including his parents. In hopes of gaining even more attention, Haruka murdered a small child at a fireworks festival who had strayed from her parents. However, he soon felt regret, thinking the child had a much more valuable future than he did, harming himself to repent. However, this twinge of regret proved to be weak and shallow, as he strangled another child to death soon enough, before presumably being arrested.

Trial 1[]

During the entirety of Trial 1, Haruka Sakurai presents himself as a meek and anxious young man. Despite being 23 years old, he claimed his age to be 17 in order to make Es more lenient towards him. In his first voice drama, "Writhing of the Weak", Haruka outwardly appeared apologetic and remorseful, although it still was clear that there's something off about him, as he seemed to enjoy being slapped by Es. However, his first song, "Weakness", showcased him as having a victim mentality and feeling sorry only for himself rather than having any concern for his victims.

Trial 2[]

In the interim between Trials 1 and 2, Haruka enters a predatory relationship with the 16 year old Muu, letting her have an illusion of control over him in exchange for using her for validation, with it being heavily implied that he plans to dispose of her shall she ever disappoint him or no longer be useful to him. During his Trial 2 voice drama, Haruka shows his true colors: a smug and remorseless killer. He tries to kill Es when the latter tells him that he may not be voted innocent this trial. Later he tries to manipulate Es into voting him and Muu innocent by threatening to kill himself, not out of any interest in bettering Muu's life but because he wants to see if Es and the audience consider his life important enough.

Trial 3[]

As Muu was voted guilty, Haruka fulfilled his end of the bargain, refusing to eat and soon starving himself to death, much to Muu's sadness.

Personality[]

At first glance, Haruka appeared to be a timid and quiet person who could barely hold a conversation with other people. He also had a habit of digging his nails into his palm when he was nervous or tense.

Relationships[]

Muu Kusunoki[]

Throughout Season 1, Haruka and Muu seem to get along fine as both of them seem to be a bit quiet and timid in nature. When asked, Haruka states that one of the prisoners he talks to the most is Muu and Muu states she gets along with Haruka the most.

In his second voice drama, Haruka threatens to kill Es if they don't forgive Muu then threatens to kill himself if his demands aren't met. It's later revealed that he told Muu herself so she can “rest easy.”

On Haruka's fourth birthday in MILGRAM, Muu scolds him for hiding away in his cell, telling him to eat properly.
