~ Documentation on the Harvesters. |
The Harvesters or Ghouls (also spelled Ghûl in-game) are the secondary antagonists of the 2020 survival horror video game Amnesia Rebirth. They also make a cameo appearance in Amnesia: The Bunker, but only as ghostly silhouettes.
They are the Empress's unwilling army of mutated humans, sent to hunt down and harvest the vitae from various people, so the Empress can sustain herself.
They are the main enemies for most of the game. They first become an active threat in the Fortress and are mostly prominent up until the third and last energy puzzle, where the Wraiths take over the role of stalking Tasi.
History[]
While it's not exactly known when Empress Tihana started to lure in victims into her dimension to drink the transformative waters from her fountain. Given that there are several harvesters in the game, it's implied she's been creating them for a very long time.
All notable harvesters seen in game are from the crashed Douglas DC-3 Cassandra. The Empress lures the injured survivors of the plane crash to her world to "heal" their wounds by drinking water from the fountain in her shrine. All their wounds are healed, though in the following hours this is followed by black-outs, amnesia and insanity as most crew mates turn into harvesters after reaching the desert village. While the experiences of the transforming crew mates are documented through memories and notes, some of them make an appearance sometime later in the game, filling in different roles.
For example, Leon is encountered in the maze and hunts Tasi through it. Whereas Yasmin and Hank as Harvesters are cinematic with Yasmin showing what happens when people lose control of their minds, with Hank's appearance being the conclusion to all the notes and memories involving him. Interestingly enough, Hank is one of the few harvesters that doesn't attack Tasi or induce fear in the player, despite technically being the final harvester encountered.
Appearance & Behavior[]
All the unnamed harvesters appear as sickly zombie-like humanoids. They have long dagger-like teeth and black veins present throughout the body. The unnamed ones don't talk and simply chase Tasi. With them sometimes chasing her in groups after she wakes a large nest of them up. They have great hearing and are able to smell the fear of their victims when trying to locate them.
Harvesters unlike the previous amnesia enemies have a fairly high degree of intelligence along with their sensory capabilities. As seen when one tortures Richard for his Vitae. With said unnamed harvester using a control panel on a machine to extract Vitae from Richard whenever it would begin torturing him.
The Harvesters from the Cassandra are different, as not only do they all have their own unique models. They are able to speak and at certain points even hold brief conversations with Tasi. With some of them even trying to resist attacking Tasi. Though this probably has to do with the fact that all the crew members are newly transformed and given a few more days they would have lost any sense of control and would not have the ability to speak like the rest of the unnamed ones.
Trivia[]
- The Beast in Amnesia: The Bunker was created in the exact same way as the harvesters, by drinking water from the Other World. However, the Beast differs from regular harvesters in the sense that it has a more animalistic appearance and retains no resemblance of its former identity and consciousness, having reverted into little more than a pretadory animal. It is unknown if this is the result of a different variant of the water or if it was simply an unintended mutation.
