In this house we...
~ Harvey's infamous catchphrase when describing the completely absurd rules of his household.
You may give a toad a wart but a toad may not give a wart to you!
~ Harvey's most famous quote during an outburst to Benjamin.
How dare you sir! We do not use the F word in this house! For THIS is a toad!
~ Harvey's angry rant to a delivery man over mistaking his new toad for a frog.

Harvey Denton is the secondary antagonist of the BBC comedy franchise The League of Gentlemen appearing as the main antagonist of the Denton story arc overall.

He is the toad obsessed patriarch of The Dentons hell-bent on keeping his nephew Benjamin as a prisoner in his home after what was supposed to be merely a one night stay, all the while driving him insane with the insane, complex rules and routines he has in place for his family to follow.

He was portrayed by Steve Pemberton who also played Pauline Campbell-Jones, Tubbs Tattsyrup, Pop and Lemuel in the same series as well as David Sowerbutts in Psychoville, Eddie, Migg, Mr. Clarke and Adrian Inside No. 9 and one third of the Vogons in the 2005 film adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy.

Biography[]

Season One[]

Harvey first appears when Benjamin arrives in Royston Vasey and he greets his nephew by giving him a house tour all the while explaining the numerous bizarre and complicated rules of his household, getting more and more annoyed with Benjamin unfairly throughout their journey. He insists on getting Benjamin involved with he and Val's practices and constantly edges him into joining in activities he wants no part in, most infamously perhaps drinking his own urine which Benjamin was naturally disgusted by especially since he had to hold the glass while Harvey relieved himself. Val does give him the option of tea instead however.

Season Two[]

Anniversary Specials[]

Personality[]

Harvey is a very eccentric and stuffy man with a ludicrous obsession with order and tidiness as well as toads his favourite animal. He is also alarmingly defensive to the point of being put into fits of blind rage whenever someone (usually Benjamin) assumes stereotypes about toads to be true and loses his temper over the smallest things being altered about his home. He also takes part in many strange activities with his wife most famously that of nude day in which on the first Monday of every month they would go about their day completely naked.

Harvey also appears to enjoy messing with Benjamin, often confusing him with the house rules or forcing him into taking part in he and Val's strange activities, or even tricking him into getting involved with said activities then acting as though it wasn't time for them (such as when he convinced Benjamin it was nude day and stripped him down to nothing before forcing him to answer the front door).

He also has a strong disdain for masturbation, reminding Benjamin constantly that it's a practice which is completely forbidden within his house while also coming up with several strange euphemisms for the practice in the process and will often jump to accuse Benjamin of doing it whenever he gets into trouble with him, his wife or daughters. In spite of this however he doesn't appear to have any issues with sex itself or other behaviours of a similar nature.

Appearance[]

Harvey is a fair skinned middle aged gentleman of average height who is rather overweight, he has long grey hair which is usually swept back and a rather puffy face which has two prominent warts next to the nose, he also has rather large ears and manic eyebrows, bizarrely enough he actually seems to resemble a toad. He is almost always seen wearing an orange turtleneck with a sleeveless safari jacket over the top of it alongside grey suit trousers, black shoes and a pair of thin, square glasses usually secured with a band. During formal events however Harvey seems to dress up more in a Victorian style suit and hat for funerals and a beige suit with a grey trench-coat on social events.

While possessing Benjamin he took on his exact appearance, being a skinny, shorter, younger man with short black hair, blue eyes and pale skin.

Trivia[]

  • Harvey's childhood nickname "Toad-Faced Harvey Denton" is a reference to the Batman villain Two-Face who is often referred to as "Two-Faced Harvey Dent".
  • It's possible that Harvey could have some form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder given his strong affinity for cleanliness and labelling.
  • The entire Denton story arc was inspired from Jeremy Dyson's obscure relatives who he went to stay with for a weekend, in spite of them constantly insisting that he make himself home however Dyson's relatives would constantly get annoyed with or upset with him for breaking rules which half of the time he didn't even know existed. This culminated one night when Jeremy accidentally locked one of them outside the night before leading to him being woken up by the particular relative shouting "who locked the door last night? I couldn't get in!" making him unable to relax for the rest of his stay.
