A single name flashed through my mind. Hasshaku-sama. A monster with a height of eight feet, so about 240 centimeters, and a female appearance, that attacked young men. She was a famous internet ghost story, just like the Kunekune.
~ Sorawo Kamikoshi detailing Hasshaku-sama's origins.

Hasshaku-sama, also known as Eight Feet Tall, is an antagonist in the 2017 light novel series Otherside Picnic and the 2021 anime adaptation of the same name. She serves as the titular main antagonist of Volume 1, File 2 (Hasshaku-sama Survival) and Volume 5, File 19 (Hasshaku-sama Revival), who is one of the Otherside Entities residing within the eponymous eldritch world.

Similar to the titular internet horror story, Hasshaku-sama is a humanoid ghost in the form of a female woman, who towers at around eight shaku (7.95 ft or 2.42 m), and is infamously known for shapeshifting into someone her victim is close to, in order to lure them, as she was noted to be infamous in attacking males she attempted to lure.

Appearance[]

Hasshaku-sama appears as a beautiful, black hair falls down her back, where she wears a long, pristine white dress. She appears to Sorawo's right eye as a bent frame-like construction of a torii surrounded by a flimsy silver halo that produces a bright blue light and is supported by two straight pillars with numerous horizontal bars intersecting it.

Personality[]

Hasshaku-sama appears to be a conniving, alluring trickster, who is willing to lure its unwitting victims into turning someone close to them, including Seiji Abarato's missing wife Michiko in his case and Satsuki Uruma in Sorawo and Toriko's case.

Background[]

Otherside Picnic[]

There is a strong sense of nostalgia when near Hasshaku-sama because she projects the image of a person who was close to the victim onto itself, encouraging the victim to get close enough for them to disappear into the blue light.

Toriko used her translucent fingers to contain the blue light while Sorawo used her right eye to observe it to destroy the Entity. Sorawo was able to fire her Makarov at the light because she could see and feel the light for what it truly was. The gunshot hole has been filled by black orbs that have now gone into thin air. The black orb eruption ceased as Hasshaku-sama shrivelled and disappeared. Toriko afterwards took up the wide-brimmed hat that was all that was left of Hasshaku-sama.

Lore[]

The urban legend of Hasshaku-sama began as a ghost tale on the anonymous Japanese message board 2channel. The narrator of the narrative goes back to his grandparents' rural home where he encounters a tall woman wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Her tale is one of the most well-known urban legends to emerge on 2chan, and many of the stories that came after it bear her imprint.

She specifically goes after teenagers and young men as her victims. Depending on who sees her, she may or may not be wearing a particular outfit, but she is typically shown donning a flowing white sundress and a wide-brimmed white hat. Amulets and salt mounds are said to offer temporary defence against her.
