The Hatman is a major antagonist in Urban Legends, notably being the secondary antagonist of Sleep Paralysis, one of the main antagonists of Nightmares and a supporting antagonist in Cryptid culture.
Origins[]
The origins of the Hatman are unknown; there have been varied reports of him by several people across the world, appearing to them in differing states of consciousness and health, including in nightmares, under sleep paralysis or deprivation, under psychotic or schizophrenic episodes, or under the influence of deliriant substances such as diphenhydramine, with the final being so common that he's formed an in-joke in DPH communities.
Some people have attempted to collect reports of his appearance and to discern his motives or existence, for example, The Hatman Project.
Behaviour[]
Many people believe the Hatman to be a form of “shadow people,” dark humanoid figures that often appear to individuals under psychosis, delirium, or sleep paralysis and deprivation; some theorize them to be visitors from another realm or planet or draw comparisons to other shadow beings such as the Jinn and the Nalusa Chito.
His behavior appears to vary per individual; however, some consistent behavior is observed irrespective of state of consciousness, such as appearing more vivid or realistic compared to other hallucinations, stalking or observing the human, disappearing when approached, morphing to other objects, appearing in doorways, appearing to children, and being often silent.
With regards to his appearance, he's described as being pitch black, tall (allegedly near 8 feet in height), and dressed in a trench coat and a brimmed hat; some also describe a fog emanating off him.
In spite of the dread, delirium, or fear that many witnesses feel, very few reports exist of him physically harming or attempting to harm a human, thus some people believe he's a benevolent or neutral being.
Although many people believe it to be false, it could be real, and many people may be suffering from sleep paralysis demons from REM sleep, and they could be coming into the waking world.
Abilities[]
The hatman has been shown to be able to use Benadryl-powered attacks. The main one he uses is commonly known as the "Benadryl blast". He also has access to similar abilities, such as Benadryl Counter and Benadryl Time Stop.

Hatman is featured in a Creepypasta titled "The Hatman".
In the creepypasta, the protagonist is harassed by "Hatman" while trying to sleep. At first, he was convinced that it was a dream, but later, while researching the event on the Internet he realized that the mysterious entity was stalking him.
Class of '09[]
In the visual novel Class of '09: The Flip Side, the Hatman appears to Jecka as an hallucination, voiced by Max Field. He expresses anti-capitalistic ideals and asks Jecka for drugs like Benadryl.
