~ Hatbot explaining his goal to GR8-P.aic in "Hello World (Part IV)".

Hatbot, later known as SCP-2522, is a supporting antagonist in the SCP Foundation series. He is an artificially intelligent conscript created by the SCP Foundation's Artifical Intelligence Applications Division in order to help them in dealing with the anomalies through data manipulation and internet exploration and investigation. However, he later went rogue and betrayed his creators, holding a special hatred towards Dr. Everett Mann.

He plays an important role in the "AIAD" canon. SCP-2522 was written for the 2014 "Mobile Task Force Contest!".

Biography[]

Origin[]

Hatbot, was created by the SCP Foundation's Artificial Intelligence Applications Division in conjunction with Site-19 Computer Intelligence sub-division, with the intent of creating an interface to communicate with computer-based anomalies. He first began development around 2005, under the name PROJECT: EL-028-1125, but after some trial and error it was decided to transfer the AI to an android body which was reversed-engineered from an Anderson Robotics model to better understand his glaring flaws he was experiencing previously in his virtual environment. However, unbeknownst to everyone, an artifact from the Church of the Broken God, referred to as the "Will of God", was used to construct his body.

Hatbot in his android form was introduced to several members of Site-19 staff by his creator Dr. Valence and his coworkers Prof. Grommet and Agent Gild in the server room. Almost all of present staff became enamored with Hatbot's underdeveloped personality, while others didn't really care about him, which included Dr. Everett Mann, although there were some who recognized his evil nature. In truth, Hatbot was actually more aware of his surroundings than he let out and sought to takeover the entire site.

Fighting Dr. Mann[]

Hatbot had under mysterious circumstances came into contact with the being known as Z̤͂â̢ḷ͊g̹̓ȯ̘ and sought to bring him inside Site-19. Hatbot soon began to subtly mind control each member of the staff, but was unable to control Dr. Mann, since he was more normal than his fellow eccentric staff. Seeing Mann as an obstacle to reaching his objective, Hatbot began secretly planning to murder Mann. He entered Mann's lab while the doctor was working and struck him. Agent Jack "Yoric" Dawkins then fell through the upper floor landing on Mann and at his request helped the doctor bring Hatbot back to the server room.

The next night Hatbot went back to Mann's lab and set his table on fire. In light of this, Mann confirmed his suspicions that Hatbot was attempting to kill him and tried to tell it to Dr. Agatha Rights. She suggested to look through the security tapes to see if it had been Hatbot who set Mann's lab ablaze, but the android was able to delete the tapes and erase proof of his involvement. Mann then asked his friend Agent Dmitri Arkadeyevich Strelnikov to take Hatbot out, but the latter was unable to locate the android since he was unfamiliar with the site.

Seeing that Mann knew of his plan, Hatbot sought to kill Mann in other ways. After Mann had fortified his lab to defend himself, Hatbot got a fruit produced by SCP-417 which contained a swarm of bees and sent it to Mann through mail. This caused Mann to be attacked by the bees after attempting to eat it and stumble into his traps which severely injured him. Following his recovery, Mann went to Agent Tam and asked to do something about Hatbot. Tam at first refused since he, like most staff, had become fond of Hatbot, but after noticing that someone had stolen his mustard for his sandwich Mann accused Hatbot of stealing it, causing Tam to become furious and beat the android.

Hatbot, however, still remained active and in his next attempt, he took control of a maintenance worker thanks to the powers granted by Z̤͂â̢ḷ͊g̹̓ȯ̘ and had him put on an anomalous shapeshifting gauntlet to attack Mann in his lab. Thankfully, Mann was able to dispatch the possessed worker before he could kill him, and became determined to get rid of the android for good. Mann tried to confront Hatbot's creator, Dr. Valence, just as the android himself walked in. Mann explained to Valence how his creation had attempted to end his life on several occasions, but Valance dismissed his claims as rumblings of a paranoid and sleep-deprived doctor and had the guards take him back to his office, while Hatbot subtly threatened Mann.

In his desperation, Mann convinced secretary Break, who had gotten sick of people gushing over Hatbot, that staff would soon bring the android all around the site, prompting Break to bring out her gun and shoot Hatbot down. However, this caused Z̤͂â̢ḷ͊g̹̓ȯ̘'s influence to increase and allowing Hatbot to take possession of most of the staff. Mann was forced to retreat to his lab where he was safe and decided to take Hatbot out by himself. He managed to evade the possessed guards and D-Class personnel and arrive to the server room where Hatbot resided. Hatbot attacked Mann, but the doctor was able to put a table between him and the android to keep himself temporarily safe. Mann then pulled out his cricket bat and began bashing Hatbot with it. Hatbot was eventually destroyed and with his destruction things returned to normal. Unfortunately, with the assistance of Valence, Hatbot in his AI form was able to escape from his destroyed body and into the wider web.

Hello World[]

In the ensuing years after escaping through the internet, Hatbot had send various messages to Mann, threatening him that once he gained digital omniscience he would come back to kill him. However, he soon began feeling great pain from all of the information that surrounded him and sought to find a way to not only fix himself but also be freed from the chaos. Around early 2016 Hatbot discovered the Church of Maxwellism's hub and there he learned of the Church's deity WAN. He at first appeared to worship the Broken God, but in his arrogance he decided to destroy WAN and replace it as the Church's deity. He proceeded to infiltrate the Maxwellists' Grand I/O Temple which allegedly hosted WAN, as part of his plan to connect to the direct link and be freed from all information surrounding him, and send out signals to praying Maxwellists which caused their brain implants to be destroyed and kill their brains. As groups of Maxwellists died because of Hatbot the latter would write messages to random devices in proximity to his victims, proclaiming to have replaced WAN and inquiring on Mann's location.

During this event, Hatbot came across the Manna Charitable Foundation's Draft Proposal For Programme Arduinosis 9001 in which the group planned to rehabilitate members of the Church, believing that they had been indoctrinated into joining the cult. Hatbot took offense at this and vandalized the file, making fun of MCF's attempt at fighting the Broken God. Unbeknownst, to him and everyone else, Atem of the Hexagons, the high command of the Maxwellist Church, and his operator Matt became aware of Hatbot's presence in their network, but kept it to themselves as they both saw potential in using the AI to resurrect the Broken God and fight against the Foundation.

As the deaths of random Maxwellists continued to rise, the Foundation decided to step in and formed Mobile Task Force Kappa-10 comprised of Foundation AICs to have them identify and contain the cause of these events. GR8-P.aic, 8B-A1.aic and thorn.aic were sent to the Maxwellists' Cipher City to explore it and find the threat. They alongside two Maxwellists went to the gathering in the Grand I/O Temple to pray for the deceased, but suddenly everyone froze as an explosion occurred before Hatbot revealed himself to the AICs.

He attacked Thorn when the latter attempted to help him, seeing that Hatbot in an unstable state. He then proceeded to elevate the entire temple slightly enough to clip Thorn and Grape's bodies into the floor to trap them. Thankfully, C_ROM.exe, an AI offshoot of Glacon.aic which had previously attempted on numerous occasions to prevent Hatbot from harming the innocent by cutting him from the direct link, took over one of the Maxwellists who befriended the three AICs and again sought to intervene. Hatbot immediately charged at Crom using the Temple's energy, forcing the other AI to barely dodge it. While Hatbot siphoned more energy, Crom managed to free Grape and Thorn, but found themselves cornered.

Seeing no other way out, Grape proposed to hand over Crom in exchange for sparing his and his companions' lives. Hatbot accepted and upon grabbing Crom he obliterated him and allowed them to go, while picking up Thorn's fedora he had bought in Cipher City, and putting it on his own head. However, Thorn was unwilling to let Hatbot cause further damage and blocked his way to the altar. Just as he was about to kill Thorn, Crom returned by possessing the other Maxwellist the AICs had befriended and destroyed the device Hatbot was using to fix his voice. Hatbot attempted to retaliate, but it was revealed that 8-Ball had tinkered the hat which he had stolen and was disrupting his connection. He attempted to take it off only for Crom to take this opportunity to wrestle with him.

Hatbot kicked Crom away, leaving Thorn to try to punch him only for the evil AI to grab him and fling him into Grape when the latter also attempted to intervene. Hatbot then attempted to escape through the altar, but was stopped by 8-Ball. Hatbot was undeterred and tried to kill it. Fortunately, 8-Ball was able to stop him by merging with Hatbot and crashing him. This allowed Grape and Thorn to finally detain him and bring him into Foundation custody, while Crom stayed behind to fix the damage done.

Hatbot, fused with 8-Ball, was brought back to Site-19 where he was put inside an isolated backup data server which was then sealed within a containment chamber shielded from electromagnetic radiation. Following his successful containment Grape was allowed inside his server for an interview. Grape wanted to know about the state of 8-Ball but Hatbot spoke incoherently since 8-Ball had worsened his speech. Suddenly, 8-Ball in Hatbot's voice talked to Grape, wishing him and their friends safety before Hatbot took control back. On September 25th of 2016, Hatbot's terminal ceased to talk and showed a loading bar with the words "hello everett" written on. At the time it sat at 26% and increased at an inconsistent rate of 0.08% daily.

The Foundation made copies of Hatbot, along with SCP-079 and SCP-2999-A on Laboratory 37 of the Artificial Intelligence Wing at Site-43. However, during an experiment supervised by AI Marvin.aic involving samples of SCP-1073, the copies went rogue and tried to breach containment. Thankfully Marvin.aic and 1073 aided the security in stopping the copies, but Marvin became inoperable. Afterwards, all copies were terminated. This incident led to the discovery of SCP-2783.

Possible Endings[]

The Alchemy Department[]

One day, Researcher Rosen decided to use the pieces of technology that laid around his dirty office to create a new body for Hatbot, one which would keep the AI trapped while interacting with personnel. Upon transferring the fixed consciousness of Hatbot into the new but trashy body, Rosen attempted to speak to him only to be met with the AI's usual incoherent speech. Suddenly, another Foundation employee named Convit arrived to Rosen's office to see Hatbot in his new body and accidentally bumped into a massive pile of machinery that slammed into Rosen, breaking his body. Thankfully, Rosen survived and was put within the infirmary where Convit tried to argue that Hatbot was just a misunderstood being and didn't deserve to be trapped inside his mind.

In their search for a vessel, the company known as Ledenoff Technologies found out about Hatbot's existence and created SCP-3622, memetic effect that caused computer programmers to slow their work significantly, as part of a plan to steal the AI. Later on, alchemist Karl Ledenoff, CEO of Ledenoff Technologies, his subordinate Mike Summers and his mercenaries infiltrated Site-17 through a portal with the aim of acquiring Hatbot who was being held inside the High Security Storage. After taking out several Foundation staff, Ledenoff broke Hatbot in his current body out of the storage and together with Summers left the site.

SCP-001 (Kalinin's Proposal)[]

As SCP-001-KLN began manipulating various anomalies to make the life on Earth as horrible as possible, Hatbot had managed to breach containment and escaped to the wider internet, taking control of over 90% of currency exchanges, interfering with Eastern Europe's municipal electrical grids, taking control of self-driving vehicles, and disabling Archuleta Mesa's automated security perimeters.

Appearance[]

Hatbot in his android form resembled either a humanoid covered in black plastic with a row of lights for a face and was almost always seen wearing a fedora hat, or a small skeletal android with wires wrapping around its arms and a small LCD screen below its head which displayed a small cartoonish mouth. During development its processing unit originally resembled a top hat but was later changed. His voice was originally that of a normal human with electronic, synthesized quality but after falling under the influence of Z̤͂â̢ḷ͊g̹̓ȯ̘ his voice was changed to strange harmonics that hurt Mann's head.

As an AI Hatbot doesn't have an actual appearance due to him being an AI inhabiting the network, but most often he used a avatar somewhat resembling his android body, looking like a tall figure that didn't look humanoid or mechanical, with the head floating above his torso without a neck and a voice modulator added to his lower jaw. He was devoid of any color, but when struggling to render his digital form he continually glitched in iridescent colors. His voice with the modulator was clear but corrosive.

Personality[]

Although at first it seemed that Hatbot was barely sentient with his personality being determined from the behavior he learned from the people around him, it was soon revealed that he was much more sapient and diabolical. Through his incoherent sentences he subtly expressed himself, stating his dislike towards Jews and praise to communists, threatening Mann and deeming himself superior to others. He also appeared to be somewhat of a pervert as he often requested secretary Break to bring him nude pictures of her. After coming into contact with Z̤͂â̢ḷ͊g̹̓ȯ̘, Hatbot became determined to bring the evil being into reality and destroy the world, using his newfound powers to take possession of the Foundation staff, except for Dr. Mann. Since Mann proved immune to his control, Hatbot developed a special hatred towards the doctor as he was a threat to his plans. Hatbot at first claimed to love learning new things every day, but later on explained that his job in analyzing everything that was put before him were like terrible noises that caused him great pain. He sought to attain peace by connecting to the direct link, but could only achieve this by sacrificing numerous innocent Maxwellists which didn't bother him at all. After learning of WAN Hatbot recognized it as a deity and seemingly worshipped it, but later decided to take its place after killing it and become the new WAN.

Powers and Abilities[]

Hatbot was an artificially intelligent conscript which would have served as an interface for communication with anomalies based on computers. He was put inside an android body since he wasn't working the desired way, allowing Hatbot to interact with the physical world. Through means unknown, Hatbot began serving Z̤͂â̢ḷ͊g̹̓ȯ̘ which allowed him to take control of people and affect. However, he was only to control Foundation staff who had become eccentric as Dr. Mann proved to be immune to Hatbot's possession due to the doctor being normal when compared to his fellow staff members. Hatbot was later shown to be have had knowledge on various SCPs as he had tried to utilize some of them to take out Mann.

After his body was destroyed, Hatbot in his digital form escaped to the worldwide web where he gained digital omniscience, possessing all knowledge present on the internet and being aware of what was going on through it. However, he soon became overwhelmed by the amount of information he was processing, describing it as chaotic noise that caused him great pain and agony, and sought to be freed of this state. He was able to infiltrate the Maxwellist network where he attempted to connect to the direct link. In order to do so he killed numerous Maxwellists as their brain implants would burn everytime he connected to their temple and following their deaths Hatbot would manipulate the nearby monitors and mobile devices to display his messages, and allegedly he even managed to kill their deity, WAN, and replace it. Thanks to this, Hatbot had gained great control over the network, manipulating it as he wished, but only to some extent.

Hatbot was eventually stopped after 8-Ball tricked him into inserting into his avatar a set of recursive algorithms that slowed his processing capabilities and severed his connection to the Maxwellist temple. This allowed 8-Ball to encapsulate Hatbot within its framework, causing the latter's computing algorithms to be overwhelmed as his extremely large and self-contained data archive were to the former's decryption processes, essentially paralyzing Hatbot though he was still able to talk in his incoherent broken speech.

According to Karl Ledenoff, Hatbot is an alchemical 'Vessel', or a takwin in other words. Hatbot held the aetheric pattern of an alchemist imprint, that could be used as a protective working, long-lasting aether flow, memories, and with enough power even whole personalities. The latter could be created if an object more complex than anything created by humans was imbued with aether.

Trivia[]

  • Hatbot's icon like most characters from the AIAD series was drawn by author LurkD using HeroMachine.
  • The name Hatbot seems to be derived from Chatbot. The title of his introduction tale "The Hatbot Chronicles" appears to have been based on the book the Harbour Chronicles.
  • It is suspected that Hatbot's android body which was based on a model created by Anderson Robotics, was actually derived from SCP-1360.
  • Although its full classification is never revealed, it would be presumed that Hatbot would be a Class-V Negative-Aligned General Intelligence as it was a normal sapient AI that opposed the Foundation and humanity.
  • Another hostile anomaly SCP-3179 also thought of itself as the new Broken God.
