Hatchan

Hatchan, nicknamed "Hachi" (ハチ Hachi), is a supporting character in the One Piece franchise. He is an octopus fish-man who used to be an officer of the Arlong Pirates until the group's dissolution and became an ally of the Straw Hat Pirates.

He is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa in Japanese, Joseph Murray in the Odex dub, Sean Schemmel in the 4Kids dub, and George Manley in the Funimation dub.

Biography[]

Hatchan grew up with his childhood friend Kuroobi, dreaming together of one day opening a takoyaki stand. As a teenager, he made a brave mark by saving Silvers Rayleigh from drowning. Over time, he joined the Arlong Pirates—a group known for bullying islanders opposed to their views—and later merged with the Sun Pirates following Fisher Tiger's uprising. With the Sun Pirates, Hatchan played an important role by alerting the crew to enemy ships and forming bonds with members like Koala.

Later, when Arlong's crew was restructured under Jinbe, Hatchan became an officer and the caretaker of Momoo, the crew's sea cow. His journey with the pirates took him through various battles and encounters, including a notable duel with Roronoa Zoro in which Hatchan, using his six-sword style, ultimately failed to defeat the stranded swordsman. After a series of conflicts—ranging from confrontations with the Marines to internal crew disputes—Hatchan was eventually captured but managed to escape and return to Fish-Man Island.

Back home, his life took a turn toward redemption. After performing small acts of kindness and embarking on new adventures (even facing betrayal and resolving old grudges), Hatchan set his sights on his childhood dream. With the help of friends and a bit of serendipity, he gathered the tools needed to create his unique takoyaki recipe. Despite personal setbacks—such as a failed proposal to Octopako—Hatchan finally opened his own floating takoyaki stand, Takoyaki 8, rekindling his spirit and finding a sense of belonging.
