Hawthorne is a minor antagonist in the 2007 Nippon Ichi game Soul Nomad and the World Eaters. Serving as a wealthy merchant in the city of Corsius, Hawthorne has some dark secrets that the players inevitably uncover.
Biography[]
In the normal path, Hawthorne is first mentioned by Tricia when she introduces herself to Reyva and their team as a wealthy merchant with who has an information network tracking down the bandits who attacked their city of Corsius. When Corsius is under attack again, Shauna, the leader of the bandits, takes Hawthorne to the Crying Mountains. Upon reaching Hawthorne, Shauna shoves a knife to Hawthorne and announces that with his blood money Hawthorne not only purchased several little girls from Yesterwind, a hub where little girls are sold into sex slavery but "stole their innocence". Hawthorne tries to deny his crimes and tells Trish not to listen, but his cries fall on deaf ears as Shauna murders him.
Upon joining forces to rescue Levin's sister from Yesterwind, Reyva's force encounters Lobo, the leader of the slave trafficking organization. After Trish asked about Hawthorne and his daughters, Lobo confirmed Trish's fears by telling her that not only was Hawthorne one of his regulars, but none of the little girls he purchased lived past the age of 17 in his home. After noticing that Trish was one of his daughters, Lobo's reply to her was simply, "Whoever killed that sonuvabitch, you should send 'em a thank-you card".
In the Demon Path, Hawthorne's forces attempt to protect the city from the Reyva and their forces. Unlike in the normal path where he attempted to hide his awfulness, in the Demon Path he doesn't even try to hide his depravity. Not only does he insult his own men, but when Shauna encounters Trish, she reveals to Shauna that Hawthorne raped her as well. Lobo, similar to the normal path, again confirms to Shauna that Hawthorne was one of his regulars and that none of the girls who live with him stay in his home past their 17th birthdays.
After Corsius' defenders fall, Hawthorne insults his forces and then attempts to bargain with his life with Reyva. Whether it was because Hawthorne was a rapist or if it was because he was grovelling and wasting their time, Reyva and Gig refuse to allow Hawthorne to join them. After Gig suggests killing Hawthorne because of his grovelling, Hawthorne continues to beg that they don't need to kill him and that they already got what they came for. Shauna disagrees and, similar to the normal path, murders him. Unlike the normal path, however, Hawthorne succeeds in his goal of raping Trish because Reyva wasn't there to stop him in time. What's worse is that several months later, Trish would end up dying as a result of the trauma Hawthorne put her through.
Personality[]
In the normal path, Hawthorne is first mentioned as a kind, wealthy merchant who is using his resources to stop the bandits from attacking Corsius. Underneath his kind exterior, however, lies a much darker truth. Hawthorne would purchase girls from Yesterwind and would then rape and murder them before their 17th birthdays. Even Lobo, who runs the Yesterwind, is disgusted with how Hawthorne treats the girls he purchases.
In the demon path, Hawthorne doesn't even try to hide behind his faux affably evil facade. He openly berates his own men and calls them a useless joke of an army after Reyva defeats them.
