~ Hayden Rawlings trying to deny being a pedophile. |
Hayden Rawlings is the secondary antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "P911". He is a pedophile who tries to buy a young boy for sex off of the dark web, and deals with child pornographer and kidnapper Michael Earlson.
He was portrayed by John Rubinstein.
Biography[]
Rawlings is the principal of Mark Twain Elementary School and a family man with a wife and three children. Behind that façade, however, lies a dark side - he is a closeted pedophile who regularly views child pornography videos of young boys being raped, tortured, and abused.
Shortly before the events of the episode, he bids $8,000 on a young boy, Dustin Powers, who is being "auctioned" by human trafficker and child pornographer Michael Earlson.
"P911"[]
The FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) finds Rawlings after interrogating Kevin Rose, a teenage boy who performs in Internet child pornography, and getting his subscriber list in hopes of finding Dustin's kidnapper. Profiling the kidnapper as a need-driven pedophile who preys on children in an area where he feels comfortable, they look for the user address closest to Kevin's neighborhood, and eventually find "mehtevas" ("save them" spelled backwards), who had sent Kevin a link to the auction. They then have Kevin set up a meeting with "mehtevas" outside of Mark Twain Elementary School, where the user's IP address is registered. When Rawlings approaches Kevin and propositions him, the BAU arrests him.
Rawlings claims that he was trying to "save" Dustin by buying him, and that he had only emailed Kevin the link to the auction because he thought Kevin might know the boy. Unconvinced, BAU Agents Spencer Reid and Elle Greenaway search Rawlings' laptop, and find a large cache of child pornography, which Rawlings claims is "research" for a book about child sexual abuse. Supervisory Agent Jason Gideon tells Rawlings that possession of these images is enough to put him in prison for 100 years. Panicked, Rawlings tries to make a deal with Gideon, who turns him down.
FBI Agent Katherine Cole, who is working with the BAU on the case, asks Rawlings for the access code to the online auction room where Dustin is being sold, and he begrudgingly does so. While Cole uses the code to pose as a prospective buyer, the local TV news broadcasts a story on Rawlings' arrest, which Earlson sees and shuts down the auction. Fortunately, the BAU has by then found his address thanks to technical analyst Penelope Garcia, and they arrest him in time to save Dustin.
Trivia[]
- Kevin Rose is inspired by Justin Berry, an American teen and child sexual abuse victim who turned hi trauma into releasing footage of himself as child porn through his own internet server. Berry spoke with the news, gave the list of subscribers to police, and testified to lawmakers about the crisis of Internet pedophilia.
