Hayley Slater is a major anti-villainous antagonist of the British soap opera EastEnders. She appeared as one of the major protagonists in February 2018 until February 2019.
He was portrayed by Katie Jarvis.
Biography[]
Hayley Slater first came to Albert Square in Walford, a fictional borough in East London, from February 2018. She is slowly introduced to her relative Stacey and the latter's ex-spouse, Martin Fowler, after taking pictures of them. She soon encounters Martin and deceives him whilst he is looking after his daughter, Hope. Later on Hayley seduces Martin and they kiss just as Stacey walks in.
As time goes on, Hayley causes trouble for Stacey and Martin by sabotaging his daily routine of looking after Hope and her half-brother Arthur at one stage. Stacey soon finds out what Hayley is up to and they have a conflict just as Martin starts to find himself further entangled in Hayley's web of lies. As such Hayley crosses paths with Stacey's cousin Kat and her grandmother Mo by asking them for money. When Kat finds out about Hayley's ulterior motives, she kicks her out of their family home. Hayley manages to gain support from Stacey's estranged mother, Jean, by opening up about her poor upbringing whilst lamenting on being excluded from the rest of the Slaters.
Soon enough, Hayley begins to cause trouble around the square. First she enrages the pub landlady, Linda Carter, by sleeping with her husband Mick and thereafter being barred from The Queen Victoria public house; it was later revealed that Mick's old enemy, Stuart Highway, has paid Hayley to do this as part of his feud with the Carters. Later on, Martin learns about Hayley's relation to Stacey and confronts her about it - suspecting that Hayley could be trouble for their marriage and their children. Hayley soon befriends a homeless girl Brianna and they steal money from a man named Craig, only for Brianna to double cross Hayley after she refuses to go through with becoming a prostitute.
It soon becomes clear that Hayley is pregnant, but she conceals this from the Slaters when Martin finds out that she lied about having already got a son. When later apologizing to Craig over the theft, Hayley opens up about her pregnancy and she is urged to contact the baby's father. It is soon revealed that Kat's old lover and former husband, Alfie Moon, is the father of Hayley's child when he returns to the square. When Alfie and Hayley confront each other about her pregnancy, Alfie does not want to have Hayley's child; she then considers having an abortion but later decides to keep her baby.
Later on, the Slaters - with Hayley now welcomed back in the family - receive ownership of a taxi cab that belonged to Kat's late father Charlie. They decide to sell it, but Hayley secretly fixes it and decides to use it for fares even though she hasn't got a driver license. She is eventually caught out by the police and decides to give up on becoming a taxi driver. Hayley soon confines to Jean about her pregnancy and the latter sets up a meeting with a married man called Dave in order to try and help Hayley come to terms with potential motherhood. Hayley soon begins an affair with Dave, but it doesn't last long when Jean wrongfully assumes that Dave is the father of Hayley's baby. Eventually the Slaters find out about Hayley's pregnancy, but she discloses the truth about Alfie being the father and later insists on keeping the baby; she also tells Stacey that Martin is not the child's father after being confronted about it.
A few weeks later, Hayley is unhappy when her estranged mother Bev turns out after Jean sought to reconcile the pair. This proves difficult as the pair often clash with each other and argue. At one point, Hayley confronts her mother for suggesting that she could blackmail Alfie to extort money from him over the pregnancy. Later they get into a fight and Hayley is injured, after which Jean finds out that Alfie is the baby's father. Hayley soon has a breakdown and initially considers suicide, but Jean talks her out of it and Kat - unaware that Alfie is the father of Hayley's baby - contacts social services to offer Hayley support about parenting.
On Halloween 2018, Hayley goes into labor and gives birth alone in a taxi driver; Kat and fellow resident Keanu Taylor soon discover Hayley and they manage to get her checked out at the hospital. Despite being successful in giving birth to her baby daughter Cherry in the end, Hayley has trouble adapting to motherhood and finds herself unwilling to cope with managing on several occasions. Bev later tries to sell Hayley's baby, further angering Hayley. However, Kat comes to defend Hayley and the pair grow increasingly close to each other.
But Hayley is shocked to learn about Kat's past with Alfie and is further astonished when she finds out the two are on the verge of starting their relationship again, even though Kat is unaware that Alfie is the father of Hayley's child. It is then Alfie finds out that Hayley did not abort the child; he relents on getting to know Cherry but insists to Hayley that Kat must never learn the truth about it. By then, Hayley has begun to develop romantic feelings for Alfie and they end up having an affair behind Kat's back. On Christmas Eve, Stacey discovers this after witnessing Alfie and Hayley kissing each other. She then confronts them and, after deducing that Alfie is Cherry's father, issues an ultimatum; either they tell Kat the truth, or the pair leave the square forever.
On Christmas Day, Hayley decides to leave to square and Alfie insists that she does so to prevent Kat from discovering their secret. Hayley later presents a gift to Alfie - a lock of Cherry's hair. However, Kat later discovers this and finally learns the truth; that Alfie not only cheated on her with Hayley, but is also the father of Cherry all along. She confronts Alfie and the two have a furious showdown when Kat accuses Alfie of exploiting Hayley's vulnerability. Alfie turns on Kat and they fight; Hayley rushes to Kat's defense and shoves Alfie down a flight of stairs. Believing Alfie to be dead, Hayley and Kat discuss on getting rid of his body; however, it turns out that Alfie survived when he is discovered to have fled the street with Cherry. He is about to leave the square when Kat confronts him and convinces Alfie to return the baby to Hayley; he does so and makes amends with the Slaters before leaving the square.
In 2019, however, it becomes clear that Hayley is truly not coping with motherhood. Kat realizes this and attempts to convince Hayley to let her bring up Cherry until she is ready to have a proper motherhood. Hayley initially refuses and contemplates on killing herself and Cherry in a suicide attempt, but she is foiled and ends up being admitted to a psychiatric hospital. She later escapes from the hospital and ends up leaving the square on her own, but not before delivering a note to Kat - saying only "sorry".
Over a year later in 2020, Hayley is mentioned during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown; it soon turns out that Kat has returned Cherry to her mother after finding out that Hayley has been getting better since her mental breakdown.
