Mick Rory, better known as Heat Wave, is a major antagonist from The Flash comics and media.

A pyromaniac with a strong hatred of the Flash, he first appeared in The Flash #140 in 1963 and was created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino.

History[]

Modern Age[]

Even at a young age, Mick Rory was a thorough pyromaniac. He set his house on fire and burned his family alive. He attempted to get a job at the circus as a fire eater, but eventually, he wound up setting the circus on fire. He, later, set out on a life of crime and taking the name of Heat Wave.

Heat Wave originally made a costume of asbestos (before the dangers of asbestos were known) to protect himself from his flamethrower and the fire it created. During his first appearance he teamed up with Captain Cold to attack The Flash, but the two villains fell out when they realized they were both attracted to a local television personality named Dream Girl. He also temporarily went straight and helped The Flash catch a corrupt parole officer using his Heat Wave costume and weaponry. It wasn't long though before he was back to his villainous fiery ways.

New 52[]

Obsessed with fire from childhood pre-teen Mick Rory set his home alight and stood mesmerized by the flames as they burned the house down. After several similar incidents, Rory, a hopeless pyromaniac, followed his obsession to Central City. As super-villain Heat Wave, he wore a protective costume and used flamethrowers to cause panic and destruction. Defeated by The Flash, Rory joined a growing group of local costumed criminals: the Rogues. When Captain Cold tried giving them all metahuman powers using a genome recorder, a horrific accident left Rory hideously burned, but able to hurl flames from his chest. Despite often seeking to cure his fiery addiction, Heat Wave remained a loyal Rogue, fighting alongside his allies against the Crime Syndicate and as mercenaries hired to hunt down The Flash. Rory only rebelled after his leader accepted the dark gifts of reality-revising Perpetua. As "King Cold" overwhelmed Central City, Heat Wave joined Golden Glider, Weather Wizard, Mirror Master, and a team of Flashes to defeat him.

Powers and Abilities[]

Heat Wave has been known to make flamethrowers and "heat guns" to assist in his crimes.

He once became an avatar for the Sage Force and gained the ability to create fire demons.

Heat Wave appears in the animated series Justice League Unlimited as part of the Legion of Doom. In this show, he is voiced by Lex Lang.
He later appears in the show Batman the Brave and the Bold in the episode "Requiem of the Scarlet Speedster" as a member of the Rogues. In this show, he is voiced by Steve Blum.
Heat Wave appeared in Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.
A female version of Heat Wave appeared in the animated series My Adventures with Superman.

Live-action[]

Dominic Purcell plays Heat Wave in the 2014 TV series The Flash and the spin-off DC's Legends of Tomorrow, alongside his Prison Break co-star Wentworth Miller who plays Captain Cold in the series. Initially being a villain with little care for anyone but his partner, he has started to warm up to his team-mates onboard the Waverider as part of the LoT.
