The Heathers are the titular group of the 1989 film Heathers, and the musical adaptation of the same name. They are the popular clique which puts them at the top of the social hierarchy at Westerburg High.

The three core members Heather Chandler, Heather Duke, and Heather McNamara, are all beautiful and wealthy and share the name Heather. There was also a former fourth member of the group named Veronica Sawyer. The leader of the clique was Heather Chandler until she died, and despite Heather Duke taking over, the clique was falling apart.

Background

Not much is known about the clique's origins except that it used to be the three Heathers with Heather Chandler being the leader. At some point, Heather Chandler accepted an unpopular student named Veronica Sawyer into the group.

Members

Heather Chandler

The original leader of the group with her signature color being red to represent her power over the group and the school. She always looked down on and manipulated her peers, and used her great insight on what others thought of her to maintain her status.

Within her clique, she constantly bullied Heather Duke and seemed to view Veronica as a friend until their fallout at the Remington party. Heather then vowed to ruin Veronica's life at school.

However, she would end up being unintentionally killed by Veronica and her new boyfriend, Jason "J.D." Dean, when the two give her a hangover drink laced with drain cleaner. Thanks to Veronica and J.D. forging a suicide note, Heather was martyred by the school, and she would appear again in Veronica's hallucination, where she tells her that being in the afterlife is boring and comment on the small size of the funeral attendance.

Heather Duke

Heather started off as a bookworm whose signature colour is green to represent her jealousy towards Heather Chandler's power. After Heather Chandler's death, Heather Duke changes her signature colour from green to red and shows her true colours by acting like Chandler, including bullying Heather McNamara, just like how she herself is bullied by Chandler.

Heather McNamara

Heather McNamara is the head cheerleader of Westerberg High school with the signature color yellow. She is revealed to have a complicated and depressing life as Heather calls a radio station to talk about it. However, Heather Duke, after assuming Heather Chandler's role as leader following the latter's death, hears about this and decides to tell the entire school of it, essentially mocking and bullying McNamara. NcNamara then eventually wanted to commit suicide by consuming pills, but is stopped by Veronica, redeeming herself in the process.

Trivia

  • The role of Heather McNamara was originally offered to 17-year-old Heather Graham but her parents turned down the role due to the dark subject matter present in the movie.
