~ Hector arrogantly threatening the Mother. |
Hector Alvarez is one of the main antagonists (alongside Adrian Lovell) in the 2023 Netflix action film The Mother.
He is a ruthless arms dealer and one of the former lovers of the Mother, which between either him or Lovell is implied to be Zoe's father.
He was portrayed by Gael García Bernal.
Personality[]
Hector is a sleazy and vile man who would do anything to satiate his own desires and greed without any worry of the consequences. Shown to be flirtatious and a bit misogynistic, Hector brings up once having intercourse with the Mother roughly and comments on her body the moment she confronts him with a more proficient gun, even having dreamt that he made the Mother beg and scream with "no safe word", demonstrating his perverted antics. He also appears to be quite in good terms with Adrian in their partnership, more likely leaning on a superficial one.
While wondering if Zoe is her daughter, Hector makes it clear that she meant nothing to him as he's more fathomed with getting back at the Mother than knowing if Zoe is his. Besides that, it was heavily implied by one of his men he was going to do "things" to her, ones she'll never forget, indicating he would submit Zoe into a sexually abusive situation, considering his lustful comments about the Mother and scoffing off the fact she's "not that little".
Biography[]
Not much on his past, however, at one point Hector eventually started a wide arms dealing business, siphoning weapons and sold them to the highest bidder for monetary income. When the Mother was on watchtower duty, Hector was first introduced visiting one of the SAS' settlements where he first met the mother, tipping his sunglasses to her as if he was flirting. It was then the Mother introduced Hector to Adrian and the two became partners in the arms dealing business, combining their resources, and entered a three-way relationship with the Mother. Hector would eventually raise the price of a deal he made with Adrian and the Mother at some point during their partnership. Then afterward, Hector and Adrian would raise their business higher when their clients demanded something "extra" in return, using the former's connections to engage and include trafficking children to his clients, heavily indicated to be sold as sex slaves.
He is seen conversing with the Mother regarding this, saying there were things their clients sometimes want in the menu without directly telling her what they selling behind her back. Concerned, the Mother would eventually discover her search in a harbor, she founded a cargo full of children and highly reacted with disgust once she realized the horrors of their scheme, deciding to turn herself in to the CIA to expose Hector and Adrian's crimes. Prior to that, the Mother was impregnated with either he's or Adrian's child. Then at some point, Hector settled at Cuba for awhile, whilst Adrian was under surveillance by the CIA before landing in O'Hare, gaining full awareness of the Mother's betrayal and decided to settle matters respectively. It is implied Hector either helped or may have involvement with Adrian in raiding a house where the Mother was interrogated by the CIA, though it backfires when the Mother outwitted Adrian before she gave birth to her daughter, Zoe. Under unfortunate events should the Mother give up Zoe due to the threat of Hector and Adrian, 12 years from now Hector somehow got information about Zoe through his men the moment they were arrested.
Hector then ordered his top lieutenants, one of them being Yanil "Tarantula" Gonzalez, to abduct Zoe in the middle of a playground party, which the Mother successfully snipes two of them but missed the chance shooting Yanil as he swiftly abducts Zoe and shooting her adoptive mother non-fatally in the arm when she tried to stop him, getting away while one of his men came to hunt down the Mother, whom she kills and successfully gets away. The Mother and Cruise would eventually make their way in Cuba, finding Yanil before going on a wild chase after him, and after succeeding, they proceed to interrogate him as the Mother brutally beats his face with barbed wires around her fists. To their luck, Yanil proven to be tough to crack open and only responds to taunting them instead. However, the Mother went to an alternative method and have him waterboarded with beer, forcing him to spill the location, only then would Yanil taunt the idea of what Hector will do to Zoe, stating he'll do things "she won't forget", provoking the Mother to kick his chair off and have his neck impaled by a smashed bottle.
On the night the Mother raided Hector's house, she was able to successfully take out the guards and rescue Zoe in time, not knowing she is her mother yet for a moment, as the Mother decides to confront Hector himself. Having prepared an arsenal of guns, Hector has her at gunpoint with a uzi and tells her to throw her gun out and turn around, gazing at her back body portions and questioned why she still looks good. The Mother then retorts why he got Zoe involved, only for Hector to monologue how she's not "that little" and state that she is in "his castle", at the same time, justify his men's deaths, saying they died for a "good cause". He then questions if Zoe is his daughter, which the Mother didn't care but states if it matttered, which Hector reiterating the fact the Mother betrayed him and Adrian is what mattered. He gets up and explains his dream, which he made the Mother beg and scream based on the times they had intercourse, remarking that there is no "safe word" as he attempts to have his way with her, shoving his gun between her legs before actually killing her. Unfortunately for Hector, the Mother outwits him by headbutting him, throwing a candle onto a running bottle of liquor as she stabs him, leaving him to die in a fire as his weapons blew up.
