This is the kind of opportunity people get interested in. We've got our own little Gateway City event happening right here in Nevada... and as of now, it belongs to Hector Hammond.
~ Hammond as he enters the Green Lantern site in Nevada.
Paramedic: Listen. You were caught in... we don't know, some kind of attack. You're injuried. Don't try to talk-
Hector Hammond: You're fired. Lose the suit and walk home. [Turns to Tood.] Hello sport. I'm Hector Hammond. I'm the man who decides if you get medical treatment or not. So please... do try to talk.
~ Hector Hammond to Todd Rice.

Hector Hammond is the secondary antagonist of the DC Comics Absolute Universe comic, Absolute Green Lantern.

He is the corrupt and flaunting CEO of his own company, who is business rivals with Lazarus Corp, led by Ra's al Ghul. He takes an interest in the unexplainable alien events of the city of Nevada, Evergreen, caused by the population making contact with an alien, and wants to learn exactly what happened to use it to boost his own power. He is based on his original comic book counterpart.

Appearance[]

Hector is a man of avarage height, with fair skin and dark, well combed hair, with white streaks at the sides. He dresses elegantly, using a wine red suit and pants with a yellow scarf on his neck.

Personality[]

Hector is an entitled man child, who feels like he has the right to do anything because of his wealth and status. He is polite and well mannered in speech, but even when speaking softly and in elegant tones, he can threaten people and commit cruelties such as firing a medic of his team just for asking a victim of the Green Lantern Incident to not speak. Hector can be kind and generous, but those impulses can just as well go away in a whim, such as when he asked to give a steak to all the field team because of his good mood.

Hector hates when things get out of his control, being quick to anger when Jo and Hal leave Evergreen flying, demanding someone to go after them angrily, and threatening to kill his assistant when she tries to defy him, though it is unclear if it was a hyperbole or not.

Biography[]

Absolute Green Lantern[]

Hector is first seen arriving at Evergreen, Nevada in an helicopter, as his team prepares to set site across the giant Green Lantern symbol that flattened the town. He is in good mood, and thus orders to distribute stakes to his field team, and asks his assistant if Lazarus Corp has already made any moves towards the Nevada situation, grinning at the answer that they haven't, because of their current situation against Superman.

Once he lands and enter the site, he intercepts a medic from his team that is instructing Todd Rice to not talk, promptly firing him and apporaching the man to coerce information out of him, under the threat of receiving no medical care. Once he gets his information, he leaves, asking his assitant to "keep him alive", hinting at having another purpose for him.

Later he expresses his irritation over not being able to enter Evergreen to his assistant (due to the solid green lantern construct over it), before another worker of his quickly comes to warn him of a situation. Using a pair of binoculars to observe Jo Mullein's fight against Hal Jordan. When they start to lift the Green Lantern symbol that was stopping their entrance into the town, Hammond reacts with enormous glee. When his assistant suggests going to a safer place, he orders her to have the others keep scanning or he'll "kill [her] with [his] own hands".

He stays observing the glowing Green Lantern symbol along with his team until night falls, satisfied with the notion that his team is collecting lots of data. When a swarm of black ooze comes out of the symbol, Hector once again deters the data collecting team from falling back, and when Jo is seen flying out of it and away from the town, he immediately orders his forces to track them down. Enraged when learning they lost track of them, he orders an investigation, starting from Coast City. He also prepares to tell Veronica Cale about his breakthroughs.

Absolute Evil[]

Hammond Phone Call

In 1951, Hawkman was blackmailed into stopping "un-American" activities in exchange for his identity not being revealed to the public. The page then timeskips to the present day, where Oliver Queen is practising archery. He is conducting a phone call and explains to the caller that his target is Jubal Slade. Oliver also explains to the caller that an unknown person has been conducting a lot of private flights and has bought the courts. The person who is calling is revealed to be Hector Hammond, and he proceeds to a meeting room, though not without arguing with the security guards on leaving his electronic devices outside of the room. Veronica Cale greets him. Ra's Al Ghul orders Hector to quiet down before they commence the meeting.

The Joker looks at him from across the table and agrees with Ra's, saying that he does not enjoy jokes. Sitting in the room also is Dr. Elenore Thawne, head of Project Olympus. Cale explains that in 1939, there was a man named Wesley Dodds who operated as the vigilante known as the Sandman, but was shot and killed. He developed an advanced sleeping gas from which the government later stole. She then goes on to tell the story of Wildcat, a masked crime fighter who was framed for murder. Wildcat was later bribed after a stakeout in a factory and died peacefully in his sleep after retiring from crime and living a normal life. Without the work of Wildcat, 16 people perished within the factory. Cale tells the story of Iron Munro, an exceptionally talented stuntman who attended socialist meetings and lived a life of solitude, perishing when a chemical test was "accidentally" dropped on his home. The reason she explains the stories of these failed vigilantes is that they are several out of hundreds of examples of people who have acted outside of the status quo, and the targets they are dealing with today will be no different.

Cale explains that in Gateway City, a force of destruction appeared known as the Gateway Event, which summoned a massive monster known as the Tetracide. A mysterious armoured woman on her steed flew towards the beast and slayed it with a simple punch. Cale found it extremely concerning that the troops on the ground allowed her to take command and to guide them towards killing the Tetracide. She then goes on to show that at the same time, a man with a cape made out of ash was violently disrupting Lazarus Corp operations within international territory. While she describes the others as non-human beings, she can confirm that the final subject they are targeting is human. The final subject that they are targeting has an axe on his chest in the shape of a bat and "appears and vanishes like a ghost." Joker talks to himself, saying that the bat-axed target did not take the money. She then shows more examples - a detective with a strange Euclidean force around him, a woman with strange green energy around her and a lightning-fast teenager with a telepathic ape companion. Cade and the people within the room know that things are escalating and that previously they could deal with these threats individually, but that is no longer possible, so they have decided to group together.

Hector gets angry and gets into an argument with Ra's, where he shouts at him that he does not need his help. Cade believes it would be a good time to show the solution to their problems and brings in Hawkman, who has a radical appearance than before. Hawkman is brainwashed and wears a variety of bandages on his head in addition to a vicious and aggressive helmet. Hawkman arrives and places Oliver's bloodied body on the table. He asks the group within the room if they have any questions. Ra's is pleased, telling Hector that this is the way that they solve problems - not within a month but rather a day. Ms Thawne looks confused and asks how exactly Hawkman killed Queen and whether it was a covert assassination, or if they are blackmailing her and her crew. Cade gives each of them a proposition - that they could make one phone call to Hawkman and get rid of their problems. Joker asks if he could have the floor and stands up.

Joker explains that his scientists have come up with a breakthrough when it comes to particle physics laboratory and tells the people within the room not to speak of this to anyone. He explains that the Higgs-Boson particle, which is considered the final piece of quantum physics, could be the answer as to how the universe works. His scientists have found a better particle called the "Omega Particle". He then showcases a video of a quantum accelerator and states that the omega particle has a "spiritual" and "moral" dimension to it:

Existence within his universe is ordered and ordained; some have the winning cards, and others have a handful of jokers. The people who get angry at the universe rally against it, and there is a proper term to describe it - the just word fallacy. There is no belief that a world can be just, but they have evidence of a natural order worked upon the world by a higher power. As they drag Oliver's lifeless body, Joker raises a toast towards an ordered world and a "Justice League".

Trivia[]

  • Hector being a wealthy industrialist is a reference to his first appearance in 5th issue of Green Lantern Vol.2, from 1961, where he pretended to be a rich socialite.
  • Hector noticeably lacks the enlarged head and atrophied body most of his versions are known for, as well as the psychic powers that come with those. Wether he will become closer to his mainstream counterpart in the future is unknown.
    • Considering how Hector, even compared to his fellow billionare villains, is by far the most arrogant, pretentious and self important character in the Absolute Universe, it is likely his "big head" is meant to be metaphorical in this version.
