Villain Overview

Sometimes I envy the All-Father. He always sees the best in people. While all I see is what people really are. Nobody ever says what they mean. Some lie to the world; some lie to themselves and don't even know it... And then there is you. You don't know what you want. You don't even know who you are. But I hope you do know this: I will be watching.
~ Heimdall warning Atreus, while also admitting he’s jealous of Odin.
I find the hues and shades of your shortcomings almost moving. If we could only somehow harness your uselessness, we could fuel this entire city!
~ Heimdall mocking and insulting Atreus.
You think you get to just walk away…? No…no…that is not how this works…You do not get to decide my fate!!!…You’re dead…sunshine.
~ Heimdall's villainous breakdown before fighting Kratos for the second and final time

Heimdall is a major antagonist in the 2022 action-adventure game God of War Ragnarök. He was the Norse God of Foresight as well as the Watchman of the Aesir. Left-hand of Odin and his most faithfull servant, Heimdall carried forth the All-Father's will with zeal and fanaticism.

Entrusted with the legendary Gjallarhorn, Heimdall swore to protect Asgard along with the King of the Aesir, watching for invaders and the onset of Ragnarök. Blessed with unique powers of foresight and his complete mastery of bifröst, Heimdall saw himself as the Aesir's perfect tool and Odin's most valuable asset and closest confident.

He was portrayed by Scott Porter, who also voiced Damian Wayne in Injustice 2 and Harry Osborn in Marvel's Spider-Man and played Nick Hunter in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Personality[]

Hilarious! The Scion of the Aesir brought down by an old geezer’s cane.
~ Heimdall to Kratos

Heimdall is a complete loyalist and puts all his faith into Odin's decisions. The only time he will go against his father is when he senses something is wrong or if there is a threat. He is snarky and confident is his abilities, not being able to be injured in combat because of his foresight and enhanced senses, which brings him to the point of arrogance. It is best seen with Thrud and Atreus, who are inferior to his power. He bullies them but only backs down when confronted by Thor due to being disgusted when he looked into his eyes. Heimdall has a very low opinion of Thor likely due to Odin's treatment of him which is shown when he insults Thor after he attacks Atreus. He also insults Thor in front of Thrud to taunt her.

Although he is vindictive and cocky, he believed he could take down Kratos in spite of the knowledge of his horrible deeds and actions. Ultimately, his egotistical nature led him to his death since he was pissed about the idea of Kratos looking down upon him, even continuing to fight to the death after Kratos offered to spare him.

He has a ton of confidence in his foresight. Since it's the only thing that puts him above others. He doesn't view people highly because he can see everyone's thoughts, and his power to read minds is blatantly imbalanced by his inability to think things through. His antagonism to everybody leads to being hated by his whole family.

Powers & Abilities[]

Kratos, I've never seen anyone so much as lay a finger on him. Not one.
~ Mimir to Kratos on Heimdall.

Powers[]

Hofud GoW

Hofuð was the sword wielded by Heimdall.

As an elite Norse God and an Aesir, Heimdall possessed immense superhuman physical abilities and supernatural powers. Heimdall possesses immense skill and combat capability, personally trusted as the watchman of Asgard and the left-hand servant of Odin himself, famed for never being harmed or losing a battle thanks to his vast senses according to Mimir and Sindri.

  • Immortality: As an Aesir, Hemdiall is immortal, but powerful beings and weapons can kill him.
  • Enhanced Senses: Being the God of Foresight, Heimdall can hear and see things in the Nine Realms further than anyone else down to the smallest detail.
  • Superhuman Strength: As a god and one of Odin's sons, Heimdall possessed great strength. Although Kratos easily proved to be stronger than Heimdall in earlier phases, after Heimdall conjured a spectral arm with Bifröst energy after he lost his arm, he was able to punch Kratos several feet into the air, knocking him away even though Kratos tried to block the punch. Heimdall also can briefly grapple with and stun the Greek God of War with his blows. He also was able to shove his hand into the ground and lift out a sizable chunk of stone, throwing it a great distance.
  • Superhuman Durability: As one of the most powerful Aesir gods, Heimdall possesses strong durability, being able to endure hits from all of Kratos' weapon arsenal. Although, he isn't as durable as other Aesir gods, as the Draupnir Spear to pierce through and blow up Heimdall's right arm. Heimdall, however, does possesses fast adaptation and great endurance, as he is able to quickly recover from the pain brought upon by his destroyed arm and is able to continue fighting aggressively soon after.
  • Superhuman Speed: During the battle with Atreus and Kratos, Heimdall was able to move at extremely fast speeds around him to the point of almost looking like teleportation at times. Even in point-blank range, Heimdall has superhuman fast reflexes, capable of dodging and parrying superhumanly fast attacks and casually dodging Atreus' arrows, blasts of lightning, Kratos' punches, and even the extremely fast strikes of the Blades of Chaos, an achievement in which not even any of Kratos' adversaries, including Greek gods, have ever done before.
  • Foresight: Heimdall is able to see a person's next moves and intent by locking eyes, even to the point of being able to read another person's mind and thoughts. However, this precognitive capacity is based on the extent of the observed party also being consciously aware of the moves they are about to make, diminishing Heimdall's ability to anticipate them if they were randomly executed and not necessarily planned, meaning that he cannot read his target instinct and follow through erratic and unpredictable attacks. Therefore, he can be struck through pure chance; Brok notes that one can bypass the god's foresight by overwhelming his senses via forcing him to focus on more than one target at once. Hence the Draupnir Spear, able to near-infinitely multiply itself and having several of its copies thrown at the target's general location by the wielder from multiple trajectories. His own mindset also affects this ability, as the more blows Kratos landed on him, the more this ability diminished due to the rage and frustration of being hit clouding his mind.
  • Precognition: While not displayed in his battles, Heimdall is stated to be capable of seeing a person's future. This can be supported by the conversation Heimdall had with Atreus upon his arrival in Asgard, as the former said he can see cities burning in destruction and the latter was responsible for it.
  • Energy Manipulation: Many of the warriors of the Aesir, including their gods such as Heimdall, were capable of tapping into and manipulating the energy of the Bifrost, a mystical source of light that allowed travel between the Nine Realms possible. Heimdall was rather proficient at channeling the energy of the Bifrost and could use it to create powerful blasts of destructive energy.
    • Chronokinesis: Heimdall could slow down time through realm shifts and utilized the power during his fight against Kratos.
    • Energy Construct Creation: Heimdall could use Bifrost energy to create tangible constructs formed out of pure light. During his battle with Kratos, Heimdall used his Bifrost manipulation to create himself a suit of protective armor as well as a prosthetic arm after his original was destroyed.

Abilities[]

  • Swordsmanship: Heimdall is a capable swordsman and was able to use his blade Hofuð and his reflexes to parry blows and disable opponents by quickly bashing them with the handle of his sword. The official description of Hofuð stated It has separated many heads from their bodies.
  • Experienced Combatant: Thanks to his foresight, Heimdall is a capable combatant with hundreds of years' worth of experience, capable of defeating any opponent thanks to his unique senses, foresight and speed, which allows him to defeat nearly anyone without much trouble. He had easily beat Atreus and Thrúd, casually playing and toying with them without even being serious due to them being incapable of hitting him. Despite his centuries of experience Heimdall had almost no training as a fighter due to his over-reliance upon his foresight therefore when this was bypassed by Kratos he had to rely on sloppy attacks, armour and realm shifts to match with Kratos before being overpowered by the superior combatant. According to Mimir, Sindri, Freya and Heimdall himself, he has never been defeated or even touched by those who challenged him until he was defeated and murdered by Kratos, who was able to learn and adapt to how his foresight worked and eventually kill him.

Equipment[]

  • Gjallarhorn: "Gjallarhorn" was a hand-held blowing horn entrusted to Heimdall by Odin himself. According to prophecy, the sound of Gjallarhorn would signify the beginning of Ragnarök and open up portals between the Realms. After Heimdall's death, Kratos took the horn and began Ragnarök as prophesized by using it to launch a massive invasion force from the other eight Realms against Asgard.
  • Hofuð: The sword of Heimdall. While it is not the source of Heimdall's power, the blade too allows its wielder to utilize his realm shift abilities, freezing the world around them for a few seconds the same way he can.

Trivia[]

  • Heimdall is based on the deity of the same name from Norse mythology. Far different from his classic counterpart who described as steadfast, vigilant, and mischievous, Heimdall is an arrogant, vindictive and cocky person who takes joy in bullying people weaker and less skilled than him, such as Atreus and Thrúd.
  • Although his relationship with Odin is never explicitly mentionned in-game, Old Norse texts indeed consider Heimdall to be the son of Odin.
  • In the original depictions of Norse mythology, Heimdall and Loki are destined to kill each other during Ragnarök. This is alluded in his relationship with Atreus, who he continuously antagonizes and acts hostile towards, and was prophesied by the Norn's that he intended to murder Atreus in Asgard.
  • Heimdall is a perfect example of what Atreus could have turned into in the previous game if he didn't learn how to understand his godhood and if Kratos didn't discipline him better or become a proper father.
  • Heimdall displays strong bigotry against any race other than the Aesir, and is especially hateful against Jötnar. This prejudice extends to mixed race children, as he repeatedly derides Atreus, whose mother was Jötnar, with the cruel moniker of "half-breed."
    • Since his brother Thor is half-Giant, it may explain that Heimdall's contempt for him isn't just out of jealousy for being considered more useful by Odin.
