“ | The Bishops... my family. Have they not suffered enough? Have I not suffered enough? We fought, pathetic vessel. We bled. We grieved. And yet the Red Crown wants more. No more. | „ |
~ Heket's first encounter with the Lamb if Leshy's still alive. |
“ | Heket, please accept our sacrifice and bless us with fertile soils and bountiful harvest. Keep the famine at bay! | „ |
~ A follower of Heket as they prepare to sacrifice someone to her. |
“ | Another Bishop struck down; Heket ruled for an aeon, afeard by none. Her dominion being of famine, her peons, now freed, are ravenous in their appetites. Tread warily, lest thou be predated upon. | „ |
~ Haro to the Lamb if they return to Anura after Heket has been killed. |
“ | I am not inclined to emotion, the way your kind are. Though if I were, Heket would certainly inspire amusement. She was perhaps the most vicious of them. Wicked beast. | „ |
~ The Mystic Seller after the Lamb defeats Heket a second time. |
Heket is one of the main antagonists of the 2022 roguelike action-adventure game Cult of the Lamb. She's one of the Bishops of the Old Faith, the ruler of Anura and the Deity of Famine.
Personality[]
Heket comes off as the Bishop who is the most directly hostile towards the Lamb, continuously insulting them and being the first Bishop to directly act against their followers. The fact that people sacrificed to Heket also go through a fate worse than death (as in, fused with giant mushrooms, still alive) seems to imply that's she overall the most cruel of the Bishops.
Much like the other Bishops, she doesn't seem to care too much about her followers, being ready to have them sacrifice themselves for her and accidentally killing many others during her transformation. She does however care for her siblings, being furious when Leshy is killed and not wanting to bother Shamura too much due to their head injury.
She despises The One Who Waits for his treachery.
As a follower of the Lamb, Heket is barely able to speak at all, but she seems to have maintained at least some of her disliking for the Lamb.
Biography[]
Sometime in the past, Heket bargained with the Mystic Seller and became a goddess.
Alongside her siblings, Heket ruled over the Lands of the Old Faith as one of the last remaining gods. When her brother Narinder grew ambitious and power-hungry, she and the other Bishops sealed him away, which resulted in Heket's throat being slit.
When Narinder (now known as The One Who Waits) started sending vessels against them, Heket and the others killed them one by one (except for Ratau, who was unsuccessful in his task) and killed all the lambs in the Lands to prevent a prophecy foretelling The One Who Waits' return. However, killing the last lamb has them end up directly to The One Who Waits, who revives them and grants them incredible powers.
When the Lamb enters Darkwood, Heket and Kallamar are eventually warned of this by Leshy. Heket decides to not bother Shamura about this and orders Leshy to deal with the Lamb. Leshy however ends up being killed, much to Heket's anger, who casts famine upon the Lamb's followers before she and Kallamar ask advice to Shamura, who however isn't of much help due to their damaged brain.
After casting famine upon the Lamb's followers once more, Heket decides to fight the Lamb herself, but succumbs like her brother.
As revealed by the Mystic Seller, however, Heket and the other Bishops got stuck in a state where they have to relive their last moments of agony. As the Lamb ventures to allow all of them to pass on, Heket speaks to the Lamb through a statue of herself before sending minions against them and then attempts once more to kill them herself.
Defeated, Heket turns into a mortal and is converted to the Lamb's cult. At some point she will ask the Lamb to look for her throat in Anura, which will allow the player to use it as a relic for the rest of the game.
