Helen Hyde is the titular main antagonist of the 1995 science fiction comedy film, Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde. She is the female alter-ego of Dr. Richard Jacks.

She is portrayed by Sean Young, who also played Jennifer Kamplan from A Job to Kill For and Lois Einhor in Ace Ventura Pet Detective

Biography[]

When Dr. Richard Jacks and his girlfriend Sarah Carver attended the will reading of his recently deceased great-uncle, Richard discovered (by his disappointment) that all he got was some scientific experiments notebooks from his great-grandfather and no money while everyone else got Cars, House and even money.

Upon reading the books, Richard discovered that rather being a jacks, he is actually a descendent of Dr. Henry Jekyll (meaning The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story that was told for hundreds of years were based on his family past.) Upon learning how the potion that made Mr. Hyde was created, Richard decides to change the original formula by adding more estrogen to prevent the effective of the potion that turned his ancestor into the violent and dangerous Mr. Hyde. After ingests the serum and staying alive all night, Richard believed that the serum didn't work and realize that he is late for his job interview at a restaurant.

Upon arriving at the restaurant, Richard began to notice his body was changing, from his hair growing long, to his nails growing to that length of a woman nail and even his voice was changing. This led to Richard returning back to the lab where he drank the serum and transform to Helen Hyde (who was nameless at the time and only chose it after reading an article on a nearby newspaper about Mt. St Helen) and explains that she is Richard's new assistant.

Throughout the film, Helen began to take over Richard's life, such as taking his position as the perfumer at a major fragrance company, and even managing to get both his superiors Yves Dubois and Oliver Mintz, to fall for her (even though Yves is revealed to be gay) and manage to become Richard's supervisor and later fired him. During Richard's return of himself, he learned (via a recording of Helen on tv) that Helen destroyed the only copy of Jekyll's formula and the notebooks and revealed that she stole his perfume and renamed it "Indulge" and plans to reveal it in a launch party.

Wanting to stop her, Richard revealed what happened to Sarah via security cam of the day he transforms into Helen and convinced her to help him by create the antidote to get rid of Helen for good, However it turns out that the antidote can only work if Helen takes it and since Richard is Helen, Sarah must be the one to administer it once he transforms into Helen and to prevent her from escaping, Richard handcuffs his hands and straps his feet to a bed. However, when Sara manages to give half the antidote to Helen, she caused her to knock over a beaker and started a fire in the apartment.

Not wanting Richard to die, Sarah manages to free Helen, who punched her and left the apartment. Upon arriving at the launch party (and stealing a dress from a woman), Helen began to feel the side effects of the antidote, such as growing a moustache. After a short promo commercial of the "Indulge", Sarah mange to give Helen the rest of the antidote, thus erasing Helen and returning Richard back to himself. Richard then explains to his colleagues that he was Helen in order to help him understand women in order to make the perfume great. With that everyone believed his story, which resulted in Richard getting his job back and a promotion and some vacation time.

Helen is last scene in the end credits that stated that Helen was never seen again, except a few days a month when Richard get cracky.

Trivia[]

  • Since Helen is Richard's female counterpart and he is the great-grandson of Dr. Henry Jekyll, that would mean she's the Great-Granddaughter of Edward Hyde.
  • Sean Young (who played Helen) is known to be the first actress to introduce the first two-way footsie in crotch scene in movie history when Helen used it to convince Yves and Oliver about the perfume.
