~ The Valhalla illusion of Helios to Kratos. |
Helios is a major character in the God of War franchise. He was a major antagonist in the Greek Era and a supporting character in the 2023 video game expansion God of War Ragnarök: Vahalla.
He was the Olympian Greek God/Titan of Sun, who started as one of Kratos' noble allies. But following being infected by Pandora's Box, he became his major enemy and was killed by the demigod. He would later make his return in Vahalla as mental projection of Kratos' self-doubts, begrudgingly assisting him in his quest to discover his self-peace with his past.
In Chains of Olympus, he was voiced by Dwight Schultz, who also voiced Aloysius Animo in Ben 10, Charon in God of War: Chains of Olympus, Deathshead in Wolfenstein: The New Order, Professor Pyg in Batman: Arkham Knight and Vulture in Marvel's Spider-Man.
In God of War III and God of War Ragnarök: Vahalla, he was voiced by Crispin Freeman, who also voiced Alucard in Hellsing, Dracula in Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, Itachi Uchiha in Naruto, Firefly in the Batman: Arkham series and Helis in Horizon Zero Dawn.
Biography[]
Background[]
Helios is a titan who sided with the Olympians during the First Titanomachy, and is shown assisting them in flashback of God of War II.
God of War: Chains of Olympus[]
Wanting revenge against the Olympians, Persephone tasks Atlas with kidnapping Helios, causing the world to fall into darkness and Morpheus putting the gods to sleep. Though imprisoned in the Underworld, the sun god is saved by Kratos as Hades' wife is killed in the process. Following his release, Helios and Athena retrieve the gauntlet of Zeus and the sun shield, leaving the unconscious Kratos on the pillar.
God of War II[]
At the end of God of War II, Helios appears during Zeus' council before the Titans and Kratos ascend Mount Olympus.
God of War III[]
After Kratos shot down his chariot, Helios attempted to shield himself from the Spartan using guards. Kratos broke through the barricade with a cyclops, and approached the wounded god. Helios begged Kratos not to harm him, and said that if Kratos were to help him just one more time, as Kratos had previously, he would pay back his debt in full. Kratos then told Helios that if he wanted to settle their debt, all he needed to do was tell him where the Flame of Olympus was.
Helios was shocked to hear that Kratos was after that, and told him that attempting to find it was a suicide mission. When Kratos told him to be more worried about his own life, Helios summoned some of his magic to try and blind Kratos, but the Spartan blocked the beam with his hand. In one final desperate act, Helios told Kratos that to gain the power of the flame, he needed to step into the Flame of Olympus, but Kratos knew he was lying. Kratos proceeded to rip Helios' head off, and would then use it as a light source for the remainder of the game.
God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla[]
An illusion of Helios' head appears in the Valhalla DLC of God of War: Ragnarok. The illusion appears while Kratos traverses through Valhalla, occasionally replacing Mimir.
