“ | Hey Sunny! It's Mari! I'm finally back home, but I forgot my keys... Could you open the door for me? | „ |
~ Hellmari as "Mari" right before its prologue jumpscare. |
Hellmari is a minor antagonist in the psychological horror game Omori. It is a horrific version of Mari that occasionally appears to torment Sunny, most often in the form of a jumpscare.
Appearance[]
Hellmari resembles a distorted version of Sunny's sister, Mari. Its neck appears to be broken, resembling how one's neck would break from some kind of collision or from hanging. It appears to be missing its eyes, and it has a large, gaping mouth.
Biography[]
True route[]
After Sunny manages to conquer his fear of heights, Hellmari starts knocking on the door, pretending to be the actual Mari. It asks Sunny to let it in, and if he does, he is greeted by the horrific entity. Seeing the creature, Sunny quickly backs away. But if the player chooses to look into the bathroom mirror, they will find that Hellmari has entered the house and is lingering behind Sunny.
Later on, as Omori is about to enter Black Space, Mari is seen inside a coffin. By walking up to the coffin, Mari is quickly is replaced by the demonic Hellmari, who charges at Omori, possibly in an attempt to attack him. But a glitching effect briefly covers the screen, causing Hellmari and the coffin to disappear.
Additionally, during Black Space, Hellmari makes select appearances across its areas. In the Neighborhood Area, it appears from one house and shrieks at Omori if he rings its respective doorbell. In the Mirror Area, if Omori destroys all mirrors, the apparition will appear with a distorted expression and shriek at him before disappearing if he goes near. In the "Water Walkway," which is otherwise only reachable in the game's Alternate Route, there is a special event known as "Mari is Home" which can be accessed if Sunny left his house on at least Three Days Left. After crawling down a ladder to a crawlspace, Omori is met with a similar event to the prologue; Mari is at the door. However, she says nothing this time. If Omori chooses to not let Mari in, Hellmari appears and begins to chase Omori down. If Hellmari catches up to him, Omori is sent back to the docks. In another area, often known as "the Red Maze," multiple copies of Hellmari appear, disguised as floating pieces of toast slowly pursuing Omori as he wanders the maze. If Omori touches these, the area darkens, he is warped to another spot in the maze, and the Hellmaris slowly transform into their true forms. In this maze, Hellmari also appears here as a giant floating head that follows Omori, should he continue descending a ladder and ignore Daddy Longlegs's warning against it. The "Corrupted Junkyard," which resembles a distorted version of Otherworld's Junkyard, features Hellmari peering into the area through some bushes.
In console releases of OMORI, Hellmari appears in two Black Space "fear polaroids" found in both the "Red Maze" and "Lost at Sea" areas, which can be found by wandering the former and going near the beds in the latter, respectively.
During the final battle against Omori, Hellmari appears both in the background and also as a part of one of Omori's attacks. This could imply the creature is being used by Omori to attack Sunny.
After Sunny manages to defeat Omori and reveal the truth to his friends, it isn't known what happens to Hellmari. However, similarly to Something, it is likely that Hellmari ceases to be.
Alternate routes[]
Hellmari appears a few other times during the game's Alternate Route. In the reset Headspace in console releases of the game, Hellmari appears to conclude the Boss Rush with Omori and Basil after they "defeat" a simulation of Mari. Additionally, during this route, Hellmari will also start to appear throughout Sunny's house.
