Helmeppo is a minor antagonist in the first episode of the live-action series One Piece, based on the anime/manga series of the same name. He is the son of the tyrant Marine Captain Morgan, who imprisoned Zoro and oppressed Shells Town. However, over the course of the series, Helmeppo changes for the better and tries to be a good marine, in contrast to his unreasonable father.

He is portrayed by Aidan Scott.

Biography[]

When Zoro was sitting in the bar in Shells Town with the body of Mister 7, Rika bumped into the son of the marine captain with her homemade rice balls, causing them to fall to the ground. Helmeppo insulted the girl and crushed the rice balls. Rika apologized, but Zoro saw things differently and confronted the spoiled Helmeppo. He ate one of the rice balls that had fallen to the ground and gave him the other one to eat. Helmeppo should also apologize, but he didn't see the point. Referring to his father, he drew his sword and a fight ensued. Helmeppo had no chance and although marines who were present rushed to his aid, the pirate hunter defeated them easily without even drawing his swords from their sheaths. However, since Zoro was in Shells Town to collect the bounty for Mister 7, he went with Helmeppo to his father Morgan. Morgan wanted to win Zoro over to his cause and when Helmeppo tried to interfere, his father gave him a blue eye with his axe hand. Finally, Zoro agreed to be publicly tied to the cross for seven days as punishment, as Morgan threatened to deny him the chance to collect bounties in the future. Helmeppo and two other marines went to Zoro on the cross and revealed to him that Morgan had no intention of untying him and that Zoro would die there. Shortly afterwards, however, Luffy appeared and freed Zoro from the cross, whereupon the pirate hunter went to Helmeppo's bedroom in search of his swords. He was posing naked with Zoro's sword and was very scared when he saw him. He asked if he was going to kill him now, but Zoro spared his life. Instead, he cut his hair short and disappeared again with his swords. When Luffy, Nami and Zoro later tried to escape from the pier with Morgan's safe and the map to the Grand Line, Helmeppo confronted them with a gun in his hand. Luffy made fun of his hair and Helmeppo missed Zoro with his shot. Then Koby appeared and took out Helmeppo with a targeted blow.

Shortly after, Monkey D. Garp came to Shells Town to investigate the pirate attack and led the investigation. Koby had meanwhile been accepted as a recruit and was receiving compliments from Morgan, while Helmeppo's father blamed him for the escape of Luffy and his friends. Garp quickly realized, however, that the problem actually lay with Helmeppo's father and had him tied to the cross. Garp then took a squadron of new sailors under his command to pursue the pirates. Koby and Helmeppo were also among them. They chased the Straw Hat Pirates, but Helmeppo changed for the better, which was shown by the fact that he ultimately stood protectively in front of the Straw Hats and stood up for them together with Koby, while no other marine dared to defy Vice Admiral Garp's orders. Although they did not receive any punishment, he offered to train them personally, which would be a greater punishment. Koby said that he wanted to be strong enough to be worthy of facing someone like Luffy. Helmeppo also wanted to become stronger and called Koby his friend. Garp then remembered a sentence from Zeff that it was the younger ones' turn now, and told them that training would begin tomorrow. Koby and Helmeppo then stepped away as Vice Admiral Garp's trainees.

Personality[]

Helmeppo goes through a huge character development over the course of his adventure. At first he was very vain and spoiled and relied solely on his father's reputation. Like him, he was very self-absorbed and had pictures of himself hanging in his room and even a teddy bear with his once long hair. His father's reputation gave him security and self-confidence, but if someone was not intimidated by it, he quickly became afraid. He was also always very unfriendly to others. Over time, under Garp's leadership, however, Koby's influence on him becomes apparent. On the Conomi Islands in Cocoyasi Village, he even went against Garp's orders and, together with Koby, stood up for the right cause and thus for the Straw Hats.

Appearance[]

Helmeppo is an averagely tall, fit man. He initially has long, blond hair, but Zoro cuts it off. He wears the typical marine uniform, consisting of a white shirt with dark blue trousers, dark boots and a marine cap and a blue scarf. On Shells Town he wore a fine purple suit, underneath a red shirt with a wide collar and white sneakers.

Powers and Abilities[]

Helmeppo grew up as the son of a marine captain, but he didn't learn much there. He has no seamanship skills, nor does he know anything about fighting. He was seen with two pistols and once with a sword, but he was not trained in the use of weapons. Now, however, he is being personally trained by Monkey D. Garp, who has recognized great potential in him.
