Hendry Cayne is the main antagonist of the Brotherhood Games saga. He is the owner, founder, and CEO of Cayne Corporation, and performs thousands of tests on unwilling subjects in hopes of unlocking the secret to immortality.

He is the overarching antagonist of STASIS, as it is his corporation that kidnapped John Maracheck and his family to preform tests on them, directly resulting in all of their deaths. It is also his actions that lead to one of the game's main antagonists, Te'ah, to betray John; so she can sell all of Cayne's research to the world. He is also responsible for the actions of the game's other main antagonist, Dr. Malan, as Malan worked directly under Cayne.

In CAYNE, he serves a much larger role, serving as the deuteragonist. While his original body lies dormant in the breeding facility shrine, his unborn clone rests in Hadley the entire game, as his voice directs her through the facility. Hadley never realizes that the voice, or her baby, are Hendry Cayne until he reveals it at the end. Instead, she believes that the voice is a fellow prisoner, just like her, and she's hearing his voice through the walls.

Finally, he serves as the overarching antagonist of STASIS: BONE TOTEM. He is referred to several times as like a diety, implying that he not only survived the events of CAYNE, but also managed to succeed in his plan in becoming like a god.

Biography[]

STASIS[]

Cayne does not make any physical appearances in this game, however his name is mentioned on various occasions.

When John asks how its possible for the massive vine plants blocking certain areas to have grown so large in only a few months, Te'ah responds by saying that Cayne wanted to find a way to make plant cells regenerate quickly, so he eventually could implement the same methods on a human to allow human regeneration, which would allow him to give this to himself.

Cayne also authorized the torture of many pregnant women (a nod to the later game CAYNE where the protagonist, Hadley, is a pregnant test subject of Cayne) in hopes of creating many babies to use as test subjects, hoping to create a super soldier. Once again, Cayne's motives were selfish, as he intended to use this serum on himself if it could be made, further advancing his own strength. Even though Malan wished to betray Cayne so he could use the resources for his own benefit, Cayne, as the benefactor, was necessary and couldn't be eliminated. Malan never suspected that Cayne too had selfish intentions behind his science.

John briefly walks through a museum aboard the Groomlake, which details events about Cayne's early life.

While Cayne is not directly responsible for the deaths of John and his family by the end of the game, he was the one that ordered their kidnapping to Malan's facility, which is what started the chain of events that led to their deaths.

CAYNE[]

When Hadley first wakes up, she finds herself strapped to an operating table, with Hank preparing a fetal extraction using a large machine. She manages to kill him, blow up the lab, and escape to the lower levels, where she hears Cayne's voice for the first time. Cayne has awoken for the first time since the death of his original body, so he is at first confused as to where he is, noting that he can't see or move, but hears a loud thumping. Using very specific questions, and replying in extremely vague answers when asked questions by Hadley, he figures out that his cloning process was a success, and that he is Hadley's baby. As Cayne has yet to be born, he urges Hadley to stay safe and alive, telling her that she must escape, as if she were to die before Cayne can be born, Cayne too will die. He doesn't tell her who he is, and pretends to be a prisoner as well, and that she is hearing his voice through the walls. Hadley accepts this explanation, and moves on.

With Cayne's help, as Hadley still does not know who he is, Hadley is able to escape the core and main cell block of the facility, and moves to a new area, where most of the doors are guarded with forcefields. After Hadley accidentally runs into Samantha, who is behind an electrified gate, but is also blocking the elevator out, Cayne urges her to find a way to kill it, as she can't escape if it is still alive. Hadley is scared, which results in Cayne telling her a false motivational story about himself to calm her down. Still not suspecting that the voice is really her baby, or Cayne, but comforted by his words, Hadley moves through the facility to find a way to kill Samantha and escape.

As the story progresses, Cayne attempts to keep Hadley away from any threat to her, and by extension him, as much as possible. This includes doing whatever he can to tell her where to go and what to do. He even convinces her to pull the plug on the frozen deceased body of his original self, just to make sure that no two versions of him can exist at once. Eventually, with Cayne's support and knowledge, Hadley manages to lure Samantha into a forcefield barrier, slicing her in two, allowing Hadley to escape. She tries to stay to try and find Cayne, not knowing he is inside her, but Cayne urges her to go, assuring her that he will be fine. Regrettably, and unaware that she is essentially freeing Cayne, she accepts, and leaves for the elevator.

As Hadley takes the lift up to the surface, in the elevator, she begins to scream in pain as Cayne begins his birthing process from her, revealing himself as her baby this whole time, that she did everything perfectly, and that this was exactly how things were supposed to go. It is unknown if Hadley survives this childbirth, as there is a lot of blood from Cayne speeding up the process by crawling out himself, but it is presumed that even if Hadley survived the childbirth, Cayne would not have left her alive for long afterwards. With Cayne now in his new body, and free once again from the constraints of death, he moves on, and prepares to continue his plan to become a godly figure.

STASIS: BONE TOTEM[]

Once again, Cayne makes no physical appearance, but is mentioned often. It appears he was successful in becoming a god-like figure, as his name is used instead of god in multiple instances, such as Mac saying "Cayne damn it", "Oh my Cayne", and even praying to Cayne to watch over his wife. Cayne succeeded in his plan, and his corporation became a church that worships him, now his religion spreading to people who weren't even originally loyal to Cayne Corporation.

Appearance[]

The appearance of his original body is never fully seen, due to it appearing in a vat of liquid in CAYNE, but as his reborn clone from Hadley, he has the appearance of a baby, despite being fully sentient with the mind of an adult man.

Personality[]

Cayne is the most manipulative character in the entire saga. His lies are so often that it's difficult to know what is true and what is false. While manipulating Hadley to have her successfully escape the facility, he appears kind, genuine, even father-like. There are a few moments where he true nature comes out, such as when he cuts Hadley off when she considers killing Samantha, as Cayne tells her she must.

Cayne's true nature is arrogant, selfish, narcissistic, and that of a complete psychopath. His blatant god complex makes him see himself as a god among men, and he doesn't care about anyone but himself. He must fake emotional moments, such as where he connects with Hadley over an emotional moment about his son, Charlie, but this is revealed to be full of lies, and just another string in his web of manipulation. Upon revealing himself to Hadley in the game's final moments, he formally introduces himself for the first time.

Further signs of his own ego are visible when he constantly tells Hadley that her child, which is in reality a clone of him, is destined for greatness, and is the future of this world.
