Henry Avery appears in the Gilbert and Sullivan opera Pirates of Penzance. He is the so-called Pirate King.
Character History[]
Avery and his band of pirates are celebrating the coming of age of Avery's apprentice Frederick on their ship; he is released from their care shortly afterward and meets the daughters of Major General Stanley, falling in love with the youngest daughter, Ruth. Avery and his men have followed Frederick to the area and attempt to capture the girls, but fail. They then sneak into the Major General's house and try to abduct Ruth, but are chased by the police and are eventually caught. They are revealed to have been noblemen who have gone wrong, and each agree to marry one of the pirates and return to their proper station in life.

- The real-life Henry Avery was the founder of a pirate kingdom on an island in the Pacific Ocean. He was eventually caught and hanged.
