| ~ Barrymore's last words before his death at the hands of the Demon Hound. |
Lord Henry Barrymore is a minor anime-exclusive antagonist in Black Butler. He is the tyrannical mayor of the English village of Houndsworth who uses a prophecy about a demon hound to maintain his control over the town.
Personality[]
On the surface, Barrymore is a very strict and abusive man, first introduced beating his servant, Angela Blanc, for the smallest of mistakes. Due to his manipulative nature, he is shown to have full control over his people, as they are seen complying with his demands for most of his screentime. Barrymore is also heavily opportunistic, gladly exploitating the Demon Hound's actions (such as the death of James) and using them as an excuse to root out scapegoats and advance his own rule over Houndsworth. Ruthless in his punishments, Barrymore is more than willing to murder what he deems as "bad" dogs and humans who defend them.
However, beneath this tough exterior is an insecure individual. Barrymore is actually a coward, afraid of falling victim to the Demon Hound. Whether or not his draconian actions were justified, Barrymore's primary goal was to keep himself safe from the Demon Hound by maintaining public awareness of the Demon Hound's terror. His death is played for sympathy, revealing just how much of a weak man he truly was.
Biography[]
At some point in his life, Barrymore became the Mayor of Houndsworth. He began exploiting the conspiracy of the Demon Hound to develop his rule over the small town.
In 1888, Earl Ciel Phantomhive and his accomplices arrived in Houndsworth under the orders of Queen Victoria to establish a foothold in building an aristocratic resort. Ciel and his subordinates were granted accommodation at Barrymore's house. Upon his introduction, he was seen beating his servant, Angela Blanc, because he couldn't stand that she brought him a "chihuahua", referring to the fact that Ciel was a teenager. Upon being stopped by Ciel's butler, Sebastian Michaelis, Barrymore was disgusted that the Queen sent a boy to investigate his village. Despite this, Barrymore entered negotiations with Ciel, where he made it clear he would not sell his manor for the resort because of the Demon Hound curse.
That night, the Demon Hound attacked, killing a young man named James. One of the townsfolk speculated James was "punished" for having six dogs, one more than what was allowed in Houndsworth. Barrymore uses this opportunity to get the townspeople to lynch James's sixth dog for supposedly being a "bad dog". The next morning, the people gathered together outside the village and released their dogs to maul James's dog to death. However, out of sympathy for James's dog, Ciel's gardener, Finnian, attacked the aggressive canines to protect the scapegoat. As a result, Barrymore decided to have Ciel and all of his subordinates lynched for defiance. They were saved by Sebastian, who had gathered all the evidence needed to prove the Demon Hound "curse" a hoax. Convinced Barrymore had manipulated them to maintain his tyranny over Houndsworth, the people dragged him away to be imprisoned. Upon being released, Finnian paid respects to James's dog, who succumbed to its wounds.
In the evening, a panicking Barrymore pleaded to be released from his cell, claiming he knew he was the Demon Hound's next victim. Sure enough, the next morning, Ciel and his accomplices found Barrymore's mangled body, bringing an end to his tyrannical reign.
