Henry James is the deuteragonist of Stephen King’s horror novella 1922.
He is the son of Annette and Wilfred James, spending his childhood helping them take care of their farm. When his mother threatens to take him away from his love interest, Shannon Cotterie, he assists his father in murdering his mother. He later betrays his father, running away with Shannon to live a life of crime, the two becoming known as the "Sweetheart Bandits".
He was portrayed by Dylan Schmid, who also portrayed the younger version of Lee Tourneau from Horns.
Much of Henry Jame's personality revolves around his love for Shannon Cotterie. His motives behind his villainous deeds typically involved protecting his relationship with Shannon and Shannon herself. The thought of loosing Shannon caused Henry to go so far as to assist in the killing of his mother, albeit he did express some remorse while the act was being preformed. He would later go on abandon his father and his future at the farm in order to create a life with Shannon, having to turn to a life of crime in order to get by. In the end, he would end up freezing to death by Shannon's side, as he could not afford to live without her.
Biography[]
Henry spent his life growing up on a farm with his mother and father. Henry would end up falling in love with the neighbor girl, Shannon Cotterie, whom he would plan on starting a life with.
After Annette threatened to take Henry away to the city, Wilfred met with Henry in a cornfield and manipulated him into believing that their only option was to murder Annette. Henry's desire to go through with his father's plan strengthened when learning that his mother did not approve of his relationship with Shannon. Later that night, he held a pillow over his sleeping mother's head while his father slit her throat open, the two dumping her body in the farm's well.
When Henry becomes worried about the police coming to their house, Henry decides that the best corse of action would be to fill in the the well, making up an excuse involving a cow that had supposedly fallen in. The police showed up to their house during the filling, and Henry followed around with his father while the officer investigated. Although things appear to go back to normal, Shannon reveals to Wilfred that Henry has become more moody with her, to which Wilfred reassured her that everything was fine. Later that night, Wilfred would see who he thought was his wife, but it turned out to be Henry.
Sometime later, Henry relayed to Wilfred that Shannon was pregnant, and that he wanted to marry her. He told his father that he should have sold Annette's part of the land, as that would have allowed him to afford a wedding. Shannon's father wanted to send the two away to have and raise their baby, much to Wilfred's ire. Shannon's father relayed onto Wilfred that he needed to come up with seventy five dollars to help cover the move, and so Wilfred goes to the bank in order to try and find a way to come up with the cash. When he comes back out, he finds that his truck has been stolen by Henry, who left a note telling him that if he came after them, then he would tell the police everything.
Henry and Shannon had gone on to live a life of crime in order to make ends meet, becoming dubbed the Sweetheart Bandits. During a snowstorm, the enter a diner, where they are recognized. Henry pulled a gun on the owner so they would make their escape, but not before the owner shot her in the back. Henry couldn't get the truck to start, and so they go in search of shelter, the two finding an abandoned building to take refuge in. Unfortunately, Shannon ended up passing away, and not wanting to live without her, Henry laid down and died next to her frozen body.
Henry, Annette, and Shannon appear to Henry in his apparent as undead hallucinations at the end of the story, Henry holding a knife. Before we see what he does with this, the scene fades to black.
Trivia[]
Because Henry's story is told through the perspective of Wilfred, we are unable to know how much of Henry's backstory is accurate.
Wilfred did not observe Henry's life of crime first hand, so much of this retelling is most likely general and not entirely accurate.
Henry's appearance at the end of the story was most likely a hallucination, as Stephen King noted in the novel that Henry was found dead in his apartment, the cause of death being self-inflicted rat-bites. This would contradict the ending implied by Henry, whom was seen holding a knife, the implication being that he would have killed Wilfred with it.
