Henry Peter Gyrich is a major antagonist in X-Men: The Animated Series and a minor antagonist in its 2024 Disney+ sequel X-Men '97.

He is a former government agent, who hold extreme bigoted views against mutants and sees them as threat to mankind. Him and Bolivar Trask work together on creating the sentinel program in order to locate the many mutants in the United States. After his attempted assassination on Charles Xavier, Gyrich was arrested by the authorities and placed in prison, despite this, he is one of the many members of Operation: Zero Tolerance.

In the original series, Gyrich is voiced by Barry Flatman. In X-Men '97, he is voiced by Todd Haberkorn, who voiced Genthru from Hunter X Hunter, Baatar Jr from The Legend of Korra, Ayato Kirishima from Tokyo Ghoul, Nobuyuki Sugou from Sword Art Online, Jadeite from Sailor Moon, Assassin from Fate/stay Night, and Bellion from The Seven Deadly Sins.

Appearance[]

Like his comic depiction, Gyrich is a fair skin man with brunette hair. He wears a green suit with a yellow tie and shirt. Often, Gyrich is wearing a pair of sunglasses even in prison, they are never removed until he was laying in bed after being attack by an enraged Rogue.

Personality[]

Henry Gyrich is a highly racist official of the government within the X-Men series and often opposes the mutants by any means. He views the mutants as a threat to humanity and rejects their protest for rights as he thinks they would abuse their powers for evil purposes. He doesn't trust any mutant including ones that mean no harm to him like Professor Xavier and his school for mutants. No matter how friendly they are Gyrich views it as a facade in order to gain sympathy from humans as to overrun them. In fact, Gyrich believes that humanity is facing extinction due to people developing superhuman powers of their own, which frightens him.

So as an agent of the government, he does his best to suppressed the mutants in whatever way as possible this would lead him in supporting Bolivar Trask's sentinel program and Senter Kelly's registration act. Through this, mutants will be hunted down and be forced to reveal themselves to the public. Gyrich even funds the infamous Mutant Control Agency, which is a private organization that was sponsored by the American government. After Master Mold went against Trask and Senator Kelly becoming a supporter of mutants, Gyrich remains unmoved by this and still tries to stop the mutants by making a new Master Mold in hopes it obeys his and Trask's commands but fails as the second Master Mold develop the same sentient as the original. He was then forced to reveal the location of the second Master Mold to the X-Men but remains unchanged in his opinions of them even when he was rescued by the X-Men again from the Master Mold, who wanted to exploit him and Trask to build a new body.

When he returns back to North America, Gyrich continues to spout his prejudices to the public when he was confronted by Charles Xavier, he attempted to assassinate him. Gyrich seemed to believe by doing this people would understand the dangers that mutants pose but all it did is led people to sympathize with them and condemn his actions. He was then tried and convicted on attempted murder, when told on the public's sympathies he dismissed it by calling it a "fad", showing that after all he has went through Gyrich refuses to change. Even prison wasn't enough to stop him as he became a member of Operation Zero Tolerance led by Bastion, who seemed to have shared Gyrich in his plan of enslaving the mutants once and for all. After the massacre of the mutants in Genosha, Gyrich was confronted by an angered Rogue. Gyrich remains unfazed by what happen and refused to tell her anything by then he was injured by Rogue. When he meets Bastion one final time, Gyrich expresses glee until Bastion puts him down for good as to frame the mutants of assassination.

Overall, Gyrich is a bigoted man who refuses to change his ways or look into a different perspective on the mutants as he believes that the mutants is a dangerous race that must be controlled. He believes in the false notion that humanity will face extinction and work effortless in stopping them even if he has to help commit war crimes.
