WHAT DO YOU MEAN NO!? YOU LOSER. HOW DARE YOU REJECT ME! IF I CAN'T HAVE YOU... NO ONE CAN!
~ Hera preparing to kill Gish for rejecting her marriage proposal.

Hera is the main antagonist of the 2004 indie computer game Gish and its 2020 remaster. She is a gray blob of tar similar to Gish, who kidnaps his human girlfriend Brea in her plan to make Gish all her own by marrying him.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Hera was a classmate of Gish in high school, and lived next door to him for the following six years. Hera had an obsession over Gish and vowed to have him all to herself. When she found out Gish became a couple with Brea, Hera despised the idea of a human and a blob together and hatched a scheme to separate them, while also making Gish forcefully marry her.

Gish[]

While Brea and Gish were out on a Sunday stroll one morning, Hera emerged behind them and seized Brea, taking her through an opened manhole. Gish quickly followed after and finds himself in the subterranean city of Dross, where he navigates through the various puzzles of the landscape and fends off the feral monsters of the lost city to save Brea.

At the very end of the game, Gish encounters Hera within a church at the depths of the Rapture, imprisoning Brea in a cage above a lava pit. Hera threatens to drop Brea into the lava unless Gish marries her. Gish refuses, angering Hera enough to attempt to throw Gish into the lava pit as well. However, Gish manages to activate Hera's trap and push her in the lava instead, allowing him to save Brea (or not depending on the player's actions).

In the end, if Gish rescues Brea, they become the first wedded inter-species couple and entomologists; or if Brea dies in the pit, Gish becomes a celibacy and spends the remainder of his life donating to lava awareness charities. Regardless of Brea's fate, Hera's fate remains the same. She can be heard from underneath Gehenna calling out for Gish, though nobody seems to remember who she was.

Mobile Sequel[]

Set an undetermined amount of time after the computer game, Hera managed to find her way out of the lava pit and seeks vengeance against Gish and Brea, this time kidnapping their children, the Eyelings, with intentions of luring down Gish so she can once again attempt to marry him.

Gish encounters and battles Hera three times throughout the game, each at the end of the three episodes, although he manages to escape after each fight. During the third and final battle, Hera attempts to convince Gish to join her so he won't consist to a sub-race due to his kids being offspring of a human. Gish once again refuses her offer and jumps out of Hera's trap, crushing Hera instead. Gish saves his kids, leaving Hera to presumably perish in the self-destruction of her laboratory.

Trivia[]

  • Hera could have possibly returned in the canceled 2009 sequel of Gish.
  • Hera is playable in the Vs. mode in both the original and 2020 remaster.
