Hello! You don't know me, but I certainly know you!
~ Toon Lankmann, Dreams of an Insomniac Vol. 1.
I hear someone misbehaving...
~ Herbert Lankmann, Dreams of an Insomniac Vol. 1.

Dr. Herbert Lankmann is one of the two main antagonists of the Dreams of an Insomniac analog horror series created by Zachary Gignac, AKA Pastra. He serves as the overarching antagonist of Vol. 0 - Haunted Halloween PSA, but isn't introduced properly until Vol. 1 - Foundation Archive.

Throughout Vol. 1 - Foundation Archive, Lankmann is spoken of as a cruel Doctor with no regard for his patients, despite their supposed illness. Once Alex finds Winfrey in Room 66, he is initially shown to be very dismissive, despite what this could mean for the Lankmann Foundation. Shortly after this however, he sends Caretakers to stalk Alex, and likely attempts to kill them, although their fate is left unclear as of right now.

He is voiced by Eva/Bravvyy, who also voices Bon the Dancing Rabbit and Lorenzo Waterman, and Thomas Flyswatter in Bugbo. His cartoon counterpart was played by series creator Zachary "Pastra" Gignac, who also voiced the Original Rendition of Lankmann from the ARG on their YouTube channel.

History[]

Vol. 0 - Haunted Halloween PSA[]

The Lankmann Foundation would create a guide on how to avoid the Veldigun known as Clyde, which included things such as remembering it's curfew, and ignoring any pleas for help past said curfew, as it may be Clyde attempting to lure out potential victims.

After the credits roll, Lankmann is shown on-screen, hinting at his appearance in a later installment.

In Loving Memory[]

Officer Kruger, who had allegedly committed suicide, is revealed to have been kept alive by the Lankmann Foundation after an encounter with Clyde so they could study the side effects of the encounter.

Family Photo Album[]

At the beginning of the tape, it is revealed that the Lankmann Foundation has found a video, which records a sighting of Clyde. The video itself revolves around a man who's son and wife were killed by the Veldigun, with the distraught father being manipulated and lured out by Clyde, wearing the Ghost Costume of his son.

Initially, people theorized that Clyde had the ability to erase people from existence, however, newer theories suggest that the death was covered up by the Lankmann Foundation.

Vol. 1 - Foundation Archive[]

Alex Williams, a character previously seen in an interview about Clyde, is hired at the Lankmann Foundation. Almost immediately, they realize that the Foundation is hiding something, and interviews various patients to find out what that is. Eventually, a meeting with an unnamed Patient (simply referred to as Patient 66) would be interrupted by Lankmann, which would cause Patient 66 to break down and panic as Caretakers drag her to Room 66.

Once Alex snuck into the facility after hours to investigate Room 66, and found Winfrey in the process, Lankmann would catch them in the act, and demand that Alex never tells anyone what they had seen.

Lankmann and the Caretakers would quickly become more aggressive towards Alex, and some would even stalk them through tinted car windows. Alex would attempt to expose the Lankmann Foundation with the help of an anonymous person, however, whether they succeeded or not is currently unknown.

Appearance[]

Currently, Lankmann appears as a deformed, slender man with yellowed skin and matted hair. He sports a top-hat and a cloak that covers the robotic parts keeping his body held together.

Previously however, he was shown to be a light-skinned man with short, dark hair sporting a top-hat and suit, as can be seen in his mug-shot in the Employee Introductory Tape.

Personality[]

Lankmann is spoken of as an intimidating, sadistic, and apathetic man by patients at the Lankmann Foundation. So much so, that when he speaks during Alex's interview with Patient 66, she breaks down and starts crying and screaming.

Once Alex is properly introduced to Lankmann however, he is shown to be much more of an apathetic businessman than a sadistic monster, despite his appearance. However, this is just a facade, as he begins forcing his employees to treat Alex as if they don't exist before attempting to kill them.

Trivia[]

  • Lankmann’s monstrous form was inspired by The logo of the Alton Towers attraction “The Smiler”, and Spamton G. Spamton, a character from the 2019 indie-RPG game Deltarune.
  • Concept art of Lankmann released by the official DOAI Twitter account reveals that Lankmann is a cyborg who replaced most of his organs with mechanical ones. This could explain details like his glowing red eyes and robotic voice.
  • When Lankmann's true form is revealed, instructions on how to perform a lobotomy are shown briefly.
    • Many fans believe that this is hinting towards the Caretakers being lobotomized patients/workers.
  • As a nod to how Pastra voices Lankmann in their videos, Toon Lankmann was voiced by Alex Williams, a character played by Pastra.
  • Lankmann is canonically Aro-Ace.
