In his charactiersation, he was the Reichsmarchall of the Third Reich and the second-in-command of Nazi Germany following the death of Adolf Hitler.
He was portrayed by Academy Award winning actor Russell Crowe, who had also portrayed Mayor Nicholas Hostetler, Pearly Soames, and Ben Wade.
Biography[]
Following Hitler's death, Hermann Göring was arrested by U.S. Army forces in Bavaria. Thinking he could still charm his way out of trouble, Göring asked the Americans to take his luggage. After his capture, Göring was taken to a hotel that had been converted into a holding facility for high ranking Nazis where the American Army Psychiatrist Douglas Kelley was brought in to evaluate him and make sure he remained in good mental health as the Allies decided what to do with Göring. The Allies soon decide to do something unprecedented - instead of simply executing Göring and the other Nazi leaders, the Allies decide to put Göring on trial.
Soon, the Allies relocated Göring and the other Nazi leaders to Landsberg Prison in Nuremberg as the Allies decided to hold war crime trials there. Over the next few months Kelley is assigned by prison commandant Colonel Andrus to evaluate Göring. Kelley quickly discovers that Göring is a highly intelligent narcissist who refuses to take responsibility for his crimes, even when confronted in court with films showing the horrors of Nazi concentration camps in court, dismissing them as propaganda.
Lead U.S. Prosecutor Robert H. Jackson decided to put Göring on the stand, even though Kelley warned Jackson that Göring was leading him into a trap. With it having been some time since he last acted as a trial attorney, Jackson has difficulty pinning down Göring, and it takes cross examination from the British Prosecutor Sir David Maxwell Fyfe to pin down Göring.
Eventually, the trial came to an end, and Göring was found guilty of all four war crimes he had been charged with. Despite insisting on being executed by firing squad, the judges rules that Göring was to be executed by hanging. Before he can be hung, Göring is able to take his own life with a cyanide pill that had been smuggled into the prison for him. Göring's death upsets Andrus, who felt that Göring had managed to avoid justice by taking his own life.
Following Göring's suicide, his body is loaded into the back of an army truck along with all the other Nazis who had been executed and taken away to be disposed of.
