“ | Now, if you dominate the people with violence, they will eventually fight back because they have nothing to lose. And that's the key. I go into the favelas and give them something to lose. Electricity, running water, school rooms for their kids. And for that taste of a better life, I own them. | „ |
~ Reyes's most famous quote. |
“ | Kill them. You show them mercy? No, my son. When suffering is owed, never accept death as repayment. Make Toretto suffer. | „ |
~ Hernan to his son Dante. |
Hernan Reyes is the main antagonist of the 2011 action film Fast Five and the overarching antagonist of its 2023 sequel Fast X.
He is a notorious Portuguese-Brazilian businessman and crime kingpin in Rio de Janeiro, controlling most of the city's police force and criminal operations in the process. Reyes hires protagonist Dominic Toretto and his crew to retrieve a valuable car for him; however, when Dominic's sister Mia runs away with the car, Reyes turns against Toretto and his crew to the point of trying to eliminate him. He is also the employer of Zizi as well as the late father of Dante Reyes.
He was portrayed by Joaquim de Almeida, who also played Felix Cortez in Clear and Present Danger, Bucho in Desperado, Ramon Salazar in 24 and Jean Foucher in The Hitman's Bodyguard. He also voiced Bane in the animated series The Batman, and Hector Lopez in Saints Row.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Hernan Reyes was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and fathered a son named Dante Reyes. As a child, Dante exhibited signs of mental instability and he spent multiple stints in prisons and mental institutions. However, Hernan continued to bail his son out of trouble, much to the dismay of his wife who believed Dante needed proper help. This disagreement between them led to the pair getting divorced.
Rise to Power[]
Hernan eventually became a powerful drug kingpin in Rio's criminal underworld and garnered a massive influence over the city, having much of Rio's police force under his payroll as well as a number of corporations and shell companies. However, he masqueraded as a legitimate businessman, having a good reputation in the eyes of most of the public, who were unaware of his criminal activities. Hernan would regularly convey the message into Dante that death should never be accepted when suffering is owed. Dante also took part in Hernan's criminal operation in his adulthood, serving as his primary enforcer. Later, Hernan also formed a partnership with Aimes, presumably to expand his criminal activities globally.
Enmity with Dominic Toretto[]
After getting into trouble with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) over his own illicit activities, Reyes orders his henchmen led by right-hand man Zizi to hijack three cars seized by the Drug Enforcement Administration from a train; this involves employing career criminal Dominic Toretto, his sister Mia Toretto, her partner Brian O'Conner, and their associate Vince to partake in the heist as well. It soon becomes clear that Reyes is only interested in one car - a Ford GT40 that contains a computer chip holding the locations of his ten cash houses.
However, when Mia escapes with the car, Reyes captures and interrogates both Brian and Dom with the intention of receiving the location of the car. Unfortunately for him, the pair escape to their safe house. Vince is later caught with the chip and reveals he intended to sell it to Reyes himself, with the intention of stopping the manhunt and bounty set on Dom.
Reyes' men attack the safe house just as Luke Hobbs and his fellow agents of the Diplomatic Security Service do and a chase entails. The trio manage to escape and Hobbs' agents kill Reyes' men, except for Zizi.
With the aid of the chip, Dom and Brian plan to steal all of Reyes' money and start a new life for themselves, so they call all of their friends and associates to form a new, stronger crew. First, they hit one of Reyes' cash houses and burn the $10 million stored there, revealing their faces to Reyes' workers. As the man in charge of the cash house reports to Reyes what happened, Reyes strikes him over the head with a bust in a fit of rage, killing him instantly. Reyes proceeds to move all of his money into a locked vault inside the police station, putting all the officers there on his payroll to keep guard over it at all times.
As Hobbs eventually arrests Dom, Mia, Brian and Vince in order to transport them back to America for extradition, their convoy is attacked by Reyes' men who kill all of Hobbs' team members (and Vince), but all are later killed by Dom, Brian and Vince, save for Zizi, who escapes death once more.
Dom and his team (including Hobbs and Elena Neves) attack the police station. Dom and Brian remove and drive off with the vault, pursued by a contingent of corrupt officers as well as Reyes, Zizi and their men. On the bridge, Dom makes the vault flips, crashing into Reyes' car; Zizi jumps out to save himself and leaves Reyes to scream as the vault hits his car. Following Zizi's death caused by Brian, Reyes crawls out of the car, moments after Hobbs and Elena arrive, and begs for his life. However, Hobbs executes him in the name of his team. The team split Reyes' money and moved to their separate ways.
Legacy[]
Following Hernan's death, the heist instigated by Dominic and his crew would come back to haunt them as Hernan's son Dante survived and vowed revenge on Dom and his team by continued his partnership with Aimes and the two kept surveillance on the family for ten years before Dante decided to enact his revenge. Dante's revenge spree in his father's name would result in Dom, his team, and anyone associated with them being put in danger. Dante also bombed Vatican City and framed Dominic and his team for it. Dante eventually turned his sights onto Luke Hobbs, who was the true killer of his father.
Personality[]
Hernan Reyes was a very sophisticated and elegant, yet ruthless individual, that will do everything in his power to keep his authority and wealth. He was a highly notorious and powerful drug lord and mobster, who possessed great authority over his henchmen. He was also a very intelligent and skilled businessman and was skilled with gaining money for drugs. At first, Reyes employed Dom and his crew to aid him, but became annoyed after their betrayal. However, despite his violent and corrupt nature, Reyes didn't lack honor. He was shown to be also a polite and sympathetic man, and still had standards and respect for others. He also had some love for his son, Dante Reyes, bailing him out of prison and mental wards many times and allowing the latter to take part in his criminal enterprise.
When three of his men died during the DEA Train Heist, Reyes simply brushed it off as business gone astray and admitted to only caring about the Ford GT40 which contained a chip of his delivery schedule.
